Rose Tyler got a reaction from gellert in Clinical Psychology GRE Scores
Most clinical programs post averages from past cycles on their website. Check out the schools you're interested in applying to and look for admissions data. Going by the stats of programs I'm looking at, your quantitative is solid but your verbal might be a little low. But like Jay's Brain said, GRE score is not the only factor.

Rose Tyler got a reaction from JoePianist in Apply this cycle or wait another year?
Long story short: I’m trying to decide if it would be worth the time and money to apply this application cycle or if I should just wait until next year. Any advice would be appreciated.

I applied last fall, shut out across the board for doctoral programs, interviews with two terminal masters but no dice. I had three semesters research experience that was only tangentially related to my actual interests, a solid GPA, and low GRE scores. I was also concerned about my LORs. The only letter I wasn’t worried about was the one from my lab head, adviser, and favorite professor (I took multiple classes from him, including statistics). My other two letters were from professors that I’d had a couple classes with each but not a ton of contact.

I’ve graduated since the last application cycle, adding another semester of research experience (which included running a study for a graduate student at a job away from campus), tutoring students in psychology courses, and rounding out my curriculum.

My intention was to spend this summer volunteering, both in research labs and outside organizations. My hope was to clarify my interests, gain research experience, and maybe find a letter-writer or two. Through a series of unfortunate (and seemingly never-ending) difficulties, I wasn’t able to do any of that. I’m also in a place financially where I can’t justify dropping that much money on applications if I don’t have a snowball’s chance on the sun. Especially because I still have to retake the GRE. On the other hand, I’d prefer to start grad school sooner rather than later, if I can.

My undergrad program may have been an outlier. We had two animal labs: behavioral neuroscience (rats) and learning (pigeons). Although we also had multiple labs that studied people and they only intermixed if students wanted to study in both labs. As long as you're working in a lab that conducts studies with human participants, you'll be all right. Whether or not they do is pretty obvious from their research interests and papers.

I applied to clinical psychology masters (2) and doctoral programs (5).

    GRE:
    Test: $200
Scores: $27 * 4. I wasted one freebie on a school I ended up not applying to because I didn't meet minimum score requirements.

    Transcripts:
My school has these at about $7 a pop. I had to send one to each school plus buy a copy for myself because a couple schools wanted scanned copies.

    Fees:
    Ranged from $35 to $65.

    Interviews:
I didn't get any interviews at doctoral programs but I was invited to both masters. I would have been looking at over $1,000 each to attend in person (plane tickets were both about $900 round-trip, but this was an outlier as my university is remotely located). I scheduled phone interviews instead.

    Total: ~$500

This application cycle I'm looking to apply to ten schools and am trying to save a solid grand to do it.

Daredevil is fantastic, but in that case it is best taken slowly. I'm all right with most gore, but there were still a couple things that shocked me.

I've got Arrow and The Flash on CW. And Supernatural, even though I quit after season eight. Although a part of me wants to keep going even though I know I'll regret it. It's my guilty pleasure.

I love school, I'm not burnt out, and I'm really looking forward to graduate studies. And there isn't much within my field that I can do with just an undergrad degree, so I don't really see the point of waiting. Being able to defer my student loans is a nice bonus too let's be honest.

I know the feeling. I had a long list of schools and I was only able to pick a few because of limited finances. A part of me can't help but wonder if things would be different had I picked one school over another.

I've had a lot of challenges this application cycle. There's one common theme: I wish I'd started everything earlier. I procrastinated so much and ended up doing a lot of things last-minute that I wish I hadn't. In particular, I should have contacted my letter-writers earlier and stayed in contact more often. I had a bunch of letters go out on the deadline or after. One of my letter-writers got all of his in on the deadline. My applications were mostly due on December 1st which, of course, meant that Thanksgiving break was the week before. The week before that he was at a conference.

I didn't study for the GRE as much as I should have, only getting started a couple weeks before my test date. I've always been good at standardized tests so I wasn't all that worried until the date of the test when I turned into a nervous wreck. I didn't perform well and retaking was not an option. I had to take a couple of schools from my list because of percentile cut-offs.

Figuring out my interests has been one of the hardest things. I have a number of things I'm interested in, all related, but it's hard for me to explore in order to narrow them down because there aren't any prolific researchers in clinical psychology at my school. This really complicated writing my SOP, where I was trying to explain my interests for graduate study while also discussing my research experience in another (related) field.

Can those with invites from UNC-Greensboro please PM me your POIs? The silence is getting deafening over here. Thanks!

Rose Tyler got a reaction from JoePianist in -Grad School or Bust!...or Starbucks Barista? What are your backup plans?
It's looking increasingly likely that I'm going to be falling on a back-up plan. My SO is applying to teach English overseas so my plans are also contingent on how that goes.

Plan A is to get into a master's program. My GPA is solid, but I would be looking to gain independent research experience in an area actually related to my interests.

Plan B is to go home for the summer, try to get a lab assistant position at a nearby university, volunteer extensively, study my butt off to retake the GRE, and work as much as possible to save up for the next application cycle. I am open to the idea of moving somewhere else for a paid lab position or a job, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

Heard from SDN that one of my schools is done sending invites. I almost think I'd prefer rejections to this radio silence.

Does anyone else see invites posted for schools they thought about applying to but ultimately didn't for some reason and wish they had? I'm having that problem.

Looking at the results page, I just made a decision. If I get shutout, next time around - I'm only applying to the schools that sent out early rejections.
