  1. Oh yeah, we'd be commuting for sure.
  2. Was told to follow up "mid-February" to inquire about funding specifics from UCSB. I followed up today. Sigh. Was told to follow up again next week.
  3. Good to know So, for the posters in this thread, what exactly were the part-time jobs people had? I saw one was a grocery store worker... what else? Anyone do freelance work? (I'm an editor for instance, and thinking of continuing that for some extra cash).
  4. Well, it's more worded that you "cannot accept other university employment." Idk why.
  5. And some contracts say you can work ONLY if it's outside of the university.
  6. I had to do the reverse for a job - SO stayed in US, I went to Asia. One of the most painful times of my adulthood... that was the hardest part about it - I missed him ALL the time, to tears often. We had frequent misunderstandings due to asynchronous communication, a couple of which almost resulted in breakup. We held on for dear life and basically decided from the beginning to stick through it no matter what happens, and wait to see each other and be with each other again on the other side to make any decisions about our future. He ended up proposing to me about 6 months before I was due home to the U.S. and I said yes. We're getting married in a couple months

I was accepted to Boulder for MA in Comm Department, which I think is combining with media studies! Are you going to recruitment day in a couple weeks? Doing some serious searches for housing too. Have the added constraint of finding "8" and above high schools in the same neighborhood as the home we find... that should also be affordable. Unfortunately the suburbs between Denver and Boulder don't have as many options as north of Boulder or other parts of Boulder. It'd be nice to be between so SO can have more job opportunities.
  8. What's a commute like between UCSB and Ventura? Are there any less pricey places in Ventura that still have good schools? (I can check out Zillow for that too - but curious what your thoughts are).
  9. This is also what I read when I pored through NRC's website about how they calculated things. So what the heck do you do with a program who's low S is 78 and whose high S is 6?!! That's a huge range.
  10. It's very possible SB will get ruled out on finances alone - big question mark waiting for that info. Then between UNM and Boulder it's a consideration of EVERything. Kids' schools; money; partner's job prospects; how much I like the program; faculty; rank (although one is about 40 and the other is about 50, according to NRC, in Communication); etc, etc. Why, you have some advice? I'd appreciate ANY!

    Tempe, AZ

Some of us are just lucky, I guess! My partner lived there for only 6 months and came across almost all of those. There were rattlesnakes routinely in the park/grassy area of the apartment complex, and they had an open "scorpion problem." My nuclear family lived there for 7 years and tell similar tales. When I moved in earlier last year, I had been around one or two months and we got our first rattler in the backyard. We also have brazen coyotes who actually wander into the suburbs in the middle of the night, too! Maybe we've all just lived in the more "exciting" areas of the southwest...
  12. UNM you get to be the primary instructor. Boulder you TA a group of 30 out of 150 or so.
  13. ...specifically, TA-ing for lower div courses.. It's one thing to actually be the instructor, quite another to only TA... This may end up swaying me towards the arms of UNM over Boulder (still no word on exact $ amount from UCSB).
  14. Would someone mind PM'ing me if they were the one who received the UCSB university-wide fellowship? I'm in a different program/department, nominated for the central fellowship, and dying to know how much it is this year... even ballpark! I'd be much appreciative!!!
  15. Saw some UCSB fellowships in results search - how much did you get???! Who received those? Dying to know...!

  16. Holy cow! That benschmidt link FuzzyLogician posted is paradigm-altering! What a cool study! (And sad...)
  17. Congratulations! My first acceptance was a Saturday, too - such unexpected joy!
  18. Sigh... You know it's a glum Friday when the thread slows down like this. Hope next week brings more good news for folks!
  19. Anyone else accepted at Boulder and/or going to an interview or recruitment day? Mine is in March.
  20. Oh yes. Don't forget the hopping and leaping and bounding part. Crucial.
