  1. Hey all - I'm late to the game, I've been hanging out in the Comm Studies forums because I figured there was no way I would get into my dream school/program (UCSB Religious Studies). I just got a call today from a POI there though, who left a generic voicemail and just asked me to call back. No answer when I called back. Freaking out now. Anyone on here apply to UCSB or heard anything from them?
  2. ......whistling innocently.... So, is it against the rules to repost my own question .....

  4. I don't know much about this type of situation but two things strike me: 1. People who ARE familiar with your situation may be able to help more if they know specifically a: what your job plans are after graduation, and b: what your area of focus actually is. 2. Aren't you going to get letters of rec from current faculty and such?
  5. Maybe they expect some people to accept their offers right away, AND expect some people to reject offers right away. If that happens, then the waitlist and rejections list changes dramatically. Why notify #15 on the waitlist that they're waitlisted? Now, if 7 offers are rejected, they move up to 8, that's actually in the realm of possibility. Also, it's not necessarily just about efficiency, but about how BUSY these people are. For sure acceptances are a sure thing, but the waitlist and rejections list aren't always so sure, and could require double and triple work if the wrong thing is said to the wrong applicant. Also, perhaps it's just one office manager sitting there entering the rejections into the online system. If a school gets hundreds of applicants, that would take weeks, or even months depending on how busy that person normally is (and believe me, an office manager working in a bureaucratic institution such as academia, military, or government, is REALLY BUSY). And, I know this sounds awful, but, universities are probably more concerned about being respectful and courteous to the people they know they want in their school, than to the people they know they don't want. Which doesn't make it suck any less, but maybe there's some truth to it?
  6. Ah! Perfect! This is just the type of stuff I'm looking for... Thanks Autumn!
  7. I have a phone call scheduled with the school I was accepted to - they want to know if I have any questions. While I have an idea of a couple things I'd like to know (some I need to know), I might not think of everything! So, what questions would you all ask? (Considering you already know quite a lot about the program itself, in general, and about funding, in general - what are the nitty gritty specifics you'd ask now?)
  8. A book that eventually led to me discovering Comm is The Art of Translating Poetry. I love the Book Thief. And Wheel of Fortune.

  10. Sorry if this is harsh, but, if you don't think you're going to eventually get married (or otherwise engage in a lifelong, monogamous,, committed relationship until death do you part), you should end the relationship. You are wasting precious years of each other's lives otherwise. I know it's hard, especially if you really love him. But when you know it's not marriage material, you really should cut each other loose. It's painful but you will ultimately be happier.
  11. Thank you, Pleaseinsertyournamehere! (Nevermind my inability to correctly use multiquote replies...) Thank you! I really like it too. I did a visit there last year of my own accord to check it out. The people are awesome, too. The funding email came today: Full TA-ship and tuition waiver. Not a two-year guarantee, but from what I learned from current students that's pretty standard - and it's also pretty standard to get funding the second year anyway. Just subject to budgetary fluctuations and pending you're not a jerk or moron. Also the tuition waiver is not totally common - so that was a REALLY nice bonus. Also includes health insurance. Yay! Like the other programs, I will have to reapply to continue on to the PhD (I can't move schools/homes between MA and PhD due to kids in school). The most incredible thing was how quickly they cranked out a decision: ONE WEEK! Deadline was Jan 15, I was notified Jan 24. Unbelievable and awesome.
  12. UNM acceptance received today by phone! SO EXCITED! Funding info to come by email... hopefully soon!
  13. First acceptance received! So early! So happy!

Thank you guys all! I am so excited.

  14. Thank you guys, I can't believe it! I was almost shaking with exhilaration - mostly because it was SO unexpected. I was sitting in the middle of my son's trivia competition and I saw the area code and couldn't believe my eyes. I missed the call itself but stepped out to listen to the voicemail. When I started jumping up and down with excitement, I think the other parents thought I was getting a little too into the trivia competition
  15. I was notified of acceptance this morning to the school w the transcript problem!!! It's like two and three weeks earlier than the results search shows!
  16. I lucked out and got a really nice person in Registrar! They're over-nighting it on Monday...!!! Whew. And I don't see any decisions in the Results Search for this program so doesn't looked like I missed anything yet. Hopefully it doesn't take too long to "process" the transcripts once they arrive, since it's after all the grad deadlines now ... maybe they're less inundated... ?
  17. Two of my schools received my transcript, but can't see the "degree conferred" anywhere.... So I have to resend, and in one case, I'm overnighting another copy for a program who WOULD have been sending out decisions possibly as early as next week!
  18. Hmmm, they're not answering, I just e-mailed. So frustrating! But maybe it's good news that they want that official info, right? It was a personalized e-mail from the MA student coordinator
  19. Ahhhh! I just got an e-mail saying final decisions are being made for one of my programs .... but my ugrad transcripts don't show my ugrad degree, so a "final decision can't be made" yet! One of the downsides of going to a completely unorthodox ugrad institution.... Reordering them now, with specific instructions to list my degree. But the order itself doesn't even get processed until 7-10 days after submitting it! Meaning two more unnecessary weeks, at best!
  20. hell week
