I am happy to commiserate with you via PM. And share wedding ideas. Even pinterest boards Engaged August 2013, original wedding date was September 2014, new wedding date is May 2015. You want to know about postponing a wedding, I'm your gal. Granted, I will not be IN grad school when the wedding happens, but, I was transitioning from overseas back to US, moving in with a new family, leaving a full safety net and awesome job, starting a new business, dealing with multiple hospitalized (Critical) family members, preparing grad applications/researching grad programs, and planning for my Fall wedding at the same time. Then something else happened that tipped it over the edge, and I was like, you know, why don't we wait until things are little CALMER. By May, we will know which school and city we're moving to, our house will be up on the market, the kids will be out of school, the weather will be nicer, and my family will be healthier (ojala!). I can also tell you this - the less controlling of a person you are, the less stressful it will be. If you want EXACT kinds of flowers, EXACT colors, EXACT times, places, placements, smells, etc... Then you're going to be super freaking out. IF you're like "I want something in the purple-ish zone of color, and my bridesmaids should this general kind of bouquet, and the centerpieces should be basically like this..." you're going to be resting much easier. Just remind yourself what the big picture is, what the wedding is really all about, and don't get too down in the weeds about it. In the words of Elsa, let it go....

Waiting Game--how do you deal with the waiting anxiety?
jujubea replied to procedural memory's topic in Waiting it Out
omg this is me..... except the "lab" part... I'm a freelancer so it's "go to kitchen table > set up temporary-for-the-day desk > check GradCafe...".............etc. -
The record scratches........ the eyes widen..... 8O ... He added TWO words!!! Paradigm shift commencing...

Thank you for all the details! Make it sound more real, and more possible, and definitely more imaginable!

Waiting Game--how do you deal with the waiting anxiety?

Don't be talkin' about "too old" on these forums. Lots of us old'uns on here. Even actual old'uns who don't just think they're old because they're no longer 18... myself admittedly included -

Will it be good to make phone calls to professors?
jujubea replied to Friedrichdvv's topic in Applications
It would have been better to contact them before you made your application, in my opinion, especially because they never emailed you back - they might not be interested as far as you know. I assume you are already in the US as an int'l student and perhaps near one or some of the campuses you applied to? I think dropping by their actual office would be less annoying than a phone call - but that's just my personal opinion. It may also help make a bigger/more lasting impression if you showed up in person. I'm not so sure about contacting professors between applying and a decision though. There could be some sensitivities there. -
You haven't actually tried to change the Vanderbilt one, right? So I would try that option first. Just explain to them the situation. "Another school offers only one interview weekend, and it's that weekend. Is there any way to change ours?" Of course be very courteous, and of course they don't owe you any favors, and of course you should be polite and humble about it. But that's what I'd first do.

Right, lol, of course not. S'pose I was just thinking of getting from one place to another I'm on a moto, so ... if it's bad outside... it's REALLY bad on the bike. -
Blatant typos in email from POI: worry/ndb?
jujubea replied to bookofkels_'s topic in Anthropology Forum
I wouldn't worry. I've received similar. They're just busy people - and they already know you're interested in the program and maybe don't think you'd drop them because of some typos. -

Have you already applied or not? Are you asking what you should do to be a better applicant if you're not accepted this go-round? Otherwise, there's not much you can do besides wait. I am not in your field, but on this forum I have also read mixed things about industry experience. Hopefully someone from your programs and field can help you there. I also stopped working about 6 months ago, and in the meantime I've started my own business and I do freelancing work that is not necessarily related, but is nonetheless beneficial/foundational for grad school. I've done my best to make myself a strong applicant by doing some community teaching, reading as much as I can about the field (including textbooks), and prepping for the GRE's because I had been out of school for almost 10 years. I also took on some extracurricular stuff which may not help my apps, but certainly makes me a happier person. As far as number 3 - for my field, I was able to sign up for a relevant national association, and though it wasn't free, it provided me access to about a dozen journals, which collectively would've cost me over a thousand dollars to subscribe to! The membership was about a hundred bucks, for comparison. As for the "chances" question... well... see the "Before You Ask 'What are My Chances?'" thread ...No one can really say! But good luck to you!

Hahahaha. That's how I feel with the Results Search - there are literally about 6 or 7 results EVER posted for one of my programs and schools. How do you average nothing?! -

I haven't done any official TA'ing yet - but reallllly looking forward to doing so! That's why I couldn't go with Denver, they don't offer TAships for master's students. I do have some other teaching experience though... some specific stuff that if I put 'em on an open forum would blow my cover immediately!
