I'm still deciding but love the information on Dallas it is most likely going to be my choice. I was also accepted to University of Kansas so I need to take a good look at them first since I already think I ruled out my other acceptance. I keep coming back to Dallas' program though it is so unique and has a lot of opportunities. Only thing holding me back is the location I think, I know there will be stuff to do but I will miss having mountains and actual hikes with elevation etc etc. But that's kind of the point of going new places to experience something different so gonna make the most of it.

What schools are you waiting to hear from?

Any idea when they will be sending decisions? I'm holding back on my more detailed look for only the schools i've been accepted to, it will help keep me focused! I will send Qs your way if I get in! -

I'm waiting to hear the final word from CSUSM, Fresno and University of Kansas at Lawrence. I just want all the information so I can sit down and make my pro/con's lists. Interviewed at CSUSM, I feel like i'm waitlisted because they have already sent out acceptances and rejections, not sure why I have yet to hear any news... I have a trip coming up next week, i'd love to fill my layovers with making my lists...oh the things we look forward to as pre-graduate students haha -

Hey I see you were a past cycle but an out of state applicant. Do you have any information on how much the out of state tuition for graduate school ended up being (if you attended). I am having difficulty calculating it! -
Thank you for the information!

By stay off the strip does that mean don't hang out at night or don't go walking alone type of thing? I'm assuming it will be clear what the strip is once I see it lol? 5 mins is a great commute! Thanks for the information! I've heard mixed reviews about Oak Cliff or is it Oak Lawn confusing to have such similar names for out of towners? I was told one of them was "scary/sketchy" any input? or as you said just stay off the strip at night?

I'm looking for safe but quiet...where would that be haha? I'd like to be within about 15 minutes of the Callier Center. ( 1966 Inwood Rd, Dallas, TX 75235). And the village looks really nice I drove past it when I briefly visited the program BUT multiple apartment complex's there seem to have a cockroach infestation according to online reviews...disappointed but I don't want to deal with that so i'm looking elsewhere. Where is the "gayberhood" What would we type in to live there haha? Or is that the 75129 area code?

Firsthand reviews of Graduate Programs
CBG321 replied to CBG321's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Great information thank you so much. So safe to say busy Monday-Friday. All day? or is there any typical schedule like done by 5pm or done at 10pm etc. And no clients until the 3rd semester that is fantastic information as well! Thank you for the insight on how the program operates it is very helpful to hear how it is set up. And knowing weekends are fair game for clinic is good to know ahead of time as well. I like to know what my schedule will look like -

Firsthand reviews of Graduate Programs
CBG321 replied to CBG321's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Thank you! I wanted to know pro's and con's of the program. What sets it apart (I'm at a point where i'm picking between programs so am trying to get as much feedback as possible!). What is the teaching style? Do they lecture with a power point and you write down notes (like undergrad) or is it different/more collaborative etc. Do students have free time or is the schedule too demanding/stressful to allow for that? Is the cohort friendly/close or more business like/competitive. What is a typical class/clinic schedule? What does your weekly schedule breakdown look like? Anything you'd wish you'd known prior to starting? -
I will probably take you up on that! I thought the Village apartments looked nice but they seem to have a gross cockroach infestation problem in the majority of their buildings...i'll look into it more but it seemed to be a consistent complaint online. Glad to hear car theft isn't as common as it was starting to sound haha. Thank you for the area suggestions too!

I was accepted and received both, first an email then a follow up paper letter. Hope that helps!

I'm looking for a safe and quiet apartment complex relatively close (15 minutes ideally) to the Callier Center in Dallas, ( 1966 Inwood Rd, Dallas, TX 75235 ) I believe the center is in the Medical District. I'm not having a lot of luck, the rent is either very expensive or there are bad reviews about constant noise or terrible management/roaches/car theft. Is that just city living? I haven't run into these apartment issues locally so am having trouble finding somewhere i'd be comfortable/safe in the city environment. I'd be happy to live outside the "city" areas but am told the commute in is not fun and is much more than my 15-20min ideal... Plus someone will say a neighborhood is sketchy and it will be directly next to one that is considered super nice so it is tough figuring this out long distance. Has anyone lived here and had a great apartment experience? I feel like fellow graduate students will be more concerned with noise than random twenty-somethings who don't need to study/get sleep! I have plenty of time to look but am just trying to get organized...

Thanks for all the great information! I'll ask here so ppl can see if they are also curious. With the in-house clinics do we get to pick and choose or are we assigned them? For instance online I see they have accent reduction for adults, and a large variety of clinics for younger children, preverbal, CLASS etc.

IMO NSSLHA doesn't do too much, if being active is going to take time away from grades don't bother. That being said like another person said it could be icing on the cake. I felt it was more of a social club than anything and I would guess most professors are aware of that...although all my professors told me to join it so what do I know haha. I was an active member though... I think hands on volunteer work directly in a speech capacity is helpful as it helps you write about your personal experiences and how they shaped your graduate school goals. Volunteering in "related" fields holds a little less stock for some programs. They all are pretty picky haha. Also I have heard of a few NSSLHA presidents getting into only one school or not getting in, so if the president's position can't get you in, i'd say it's safe not to join. Grades & GRE > clubs and random volunteering Good luck!

Can you elaborate? I know some current and past students and no one has told me that. More so about the treatment of actual graduate students since I am already waitlisted. Also I know one program Professor personally and she is very supportive...I know she is just one Professor though so i'm interested to hear what you've heard. Just looking for more concrete details to make a fully informed decision. Thanks!

Mmmm I'd say depends what schools/programs they applied for. In my state that is highly unusual and the applicant would be ineligible unless they were specifically applying to a leveling program or a program that as you said does not count other school's hours. However the schools that do require these observation hours typically state as much in their admissions requirements page. I'd say don't panic yet, but definitely take a look at what the schools/programs you applied for require or ask them if it is an issue. Maybe they have it recorded unofficially somewhere at your school? Observation hours that are not supervised by school approved clinicians/professors do not count towards those 25 hours, at least in my state and the programs I have personally applied to. Hoping your situation is different though!

Hi anyone that attended still on grad cafe that might be able to offer some current information on the program? -
I did too same thing alternate/wait list. Has anyone been accepted? I am hoping a friend of mine got in, she said in the past they send out the alternate list first via email and acceptances snail mail...I'm hoping she is right and might have gotten in!
-
I'll look into that. I get the impression their program changes a bit, so wanted to do recent undergrads or students because I know an SLP that graduated from there but it was YEARS ago haha. I'll post back if I find out anything helpful!

Does anyone have any student contacts at NAU or are there any undergraduate students that could give me some details on their program? I'd love to PM some questions I had about how they are set up if anyone has first hand experience with this program!

Schools that do NOT require interviews
CBG321 replied to imunster's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
@imunster Hey I totally understand before I started this application process I really had no desire to leave this state, and even now thinking of it makes me a bit nervous BUT one of the school's I got accepted to UTD has direct flights home and I feel that if I attend there I will actually have more free time to A) spend time with family and friends and B ) not be super crazy stressed out for 2 years which is the M.O of speech programs in southern california for some reason haahaa. I was also accepted to NAU meanwhile I am waitlisted at 2 programs in California so I feel content with my options. I will say absolutely apply out of state even if you don't plan on moving, because it is better to have that option than being forced to wait another year only to end up out of state anyway. I did a lot of research on schools so if you have any questions about specific schools feel free to PM me. Good luck when the time comes, you're ahead of the game by thinking about it now -
I have a 3.7 and got in... I think the cutoffs are getting higher but just wanted to say not every school!

Schools that do NOT require interviews
CBG321 replied to imunster's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
If you have time to maybe take a class on interviewing comfort or skills that might be beneficial to your application process! In my personal experience practice really helps lower the anxiety. I'm not in your shoes though so if an interview is not going to work for you, there are a lot of schools in CA that do not interview. That being said they are WAY more competitive in their selection process so just keep that in mind. Fullerton for instance needs a ridiculously high GPA to get in their review pile (which might be to your benefit) and I have heard a rumor that depending on the committee they may just arbitrarily pick from the stack. I would personally take the personalization of an interview over that potential situation...They also don't require the GRE so a much more competitive school to get into based on those factors. Good luck in the process though! Definitely apply out of state if you are open to it, I got accepted there earlier and they have a lot of advantages that schools in CA do not offer. I keep telling myself it is only 2 years I can survive the weather haha. -
Hi I don't know much about class size but do have contact info for a current student so if I manage to get the info i'll come back here and post it for everyone. I have visited the clinic which is what our "campus" will be. I did not however get any insight on what our classroom space looks like, Idk why/how that slipped my mind but the program is really neat so i'll use that in my defense! Compared to my current school's clinic theirs' is AMAZING, not only do they have multiple treatment rooms that are all kind of interconnected with a U-shape of rooms and doors but also a mock-preschool classroom that looks and functions like a real preschool as far as I could tell. I witnessed some group therapy in session where each child had a student sitting next to them in the "classroom." Very cool and something I think most programs do not have. My school has small rooms that are very stark with a table in the center. Also they have an indoor playground space that is really cool, not sure the therapy correlation because it was awhile ago but still another unique resource. And people wise all the students were EXTREMELY friendly and all very happy to be there. They were smiling, in grad school...that is something I have not witnessed from many programs so I weigh that pretty heavily
