Low GRE success stories? Do these exist?
columbia09 replied to meteorite's topic in Earth Sciences Forum
No I had very low scores had didn’t get in anywhere despite having a 3.8 GPA from a highly accredited geology program. I now work in a completely different career field, and it’s all thanks to the GRE. I’m sorry, I’m very bitter about it. -
Accepted, got the decision on Friday. Declining because it’s too much money

Does anyone know of any success stories with people who’ve applied for a GRE waiver at Kennedy School of Government and was successfully granted ? I applied to NYU and Columbia this year and was accepted to both but the price tag on them was very high so I declined. My company is willing to send me to Harvard for free with everything paid for (including room and board) for one year. The only issue is the GRE requirement. I work two jobs that are very demanding and preparing for this exam isn’t practical. I called admissions and they said I can apply for a waiver but they are usually granted to people with PhDs. He said though I can still try but what’s the likelihood? My company is begging me to take the scholarship because no one wants to live in MA for a year but me. I have two science degrees and took a number of quantitative heavy classes. I need advice here on what to say when I request the waiver. Again, I got into NYU Wagner and Columbia this year but the price tags were just ridiculous.

Submitting letters of rec yourself

I actually know a lot of people that wrote their own letters and they just let their professors sign off on it which I think is unfair -

Hi all I haven’t been on this forum in a year and I’m about to head into the military soon to get my commission as an Air Force Lt, can you say post 9/11 GI Bill ?!? So I don’t know when I’ll be applying to grad school or what type of degree I even want now. I’ve applied two times in the past to geoscience programs because that was my real passion but with no luck unfortunately of getting into a program that I really wanted to attend. Mostly because of my low GRE scores and by finding out one of my letters of Rec was terrible. I’m currently in a career field I’m trying to get out of and hopefully the military will help with that. So my question is can i submit my LORs myself to programs or do the writers have to submit them themselves? I have three currently in my possession, two from professors and one from my current supervisor. One of my professors doesn’t even work at the university that I went to so I have no way to contact him and I don’t know when I’ll be applying back to school. Depends on what my situation will be

Yeah that's why I'm like I wonder if other schools do this too. I was hesitant to accept their offer to because they wouldn't fly me down to check out the school or meet my advisor which I thought was strange. They were tight on funds for that but still they should try flying students down to see if this is where they would like to be for the next 2-3 years

I got in last year without submitting a GRE on the website it only says the following Application Requirements: Three Letters of Recommendation Statement of Purpose Minimum of a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale All person’s for whom English is a second language must submit a passing TOEFL or IETLS score. A minimum TOEFL score of 79 (internet-based test) or 550 (paper-based test) or an IETLS score of 6.5 is required. Refer to the OSU Graduate College website for exemptions to this rule.

If there's so much competition what are new graduates doing then ? This is why I was hesitant to go to grad school this year. I have a financially secure job now but I hate it, I get called in on my days off all the time, I work horrible hours and the pay won't be decent for another 5 years. I had to take it because I couldn't find anything else.

I mean you have a better chance of getting an oil job with a masters then a Bachalors right? I understand what you mean though the industry is down now but won't it recover like it always does ? Oil is the main employer for geology students so that would be devistating if the field never recovers. Also there's always teaching and the environmental industry if oil doesn't work out
