Did any of you have issues with finding professors who had funding. The vast majority of the professors I contacted didn't have any funds to support students. If this is the case, I'm guessing the only other way of gaining admissions is by being awarded a TA spot which are extremely competitive.

No that's not a problem so I'm told. You can even list the whole department if you'd like it all depends on your interests. Mine are very broad so I applied to work with people in different fields of geology -

It's true this year I applied to work with 11 people there and three already said that they can't accept me because either of the number of people that applied or the fact that they aren't taking any students at all. -

UT Austin sent out their fellowship acceptances. 10 total and about 700 people applied for 50 spots. Didn't know grad school was this competitive. Is it because the oil industry is in the crapper ? -

What tier of graduate schools should I be applying to?
columbia09 replied to ollienorth19's topic in Earth Sciences Forum
My advisor at Texas Tech said that the GRE range is typically a 280-320. Usually GRE scores under 300 get the boot unfortunately but if you have a very strong application then it isn't a death sentence for your application. TT is a very good school to go to if you are interested in the oil industry. If GRE scores are of concern perhaps think about Oklahoma state. They have a solid program for oil and they do not require GRE scores. I -
Question, does UH require a masters in order to be eligible for their PhD program? It said that on the application but I know that info is outdated. I emailed the head of the department but he hasn't gotten bank to me yet

So besides the usual, UT Austin, Rice, UH, Baylor (won't even accepted me because of GREs), Texas Tech and Texas A&M, anyone know of any good schools in Texas that have a great history of putting students in the oil industry ? I emailed 3 professors from SMU but they haven't gotten back to me. Also besides Oklahoma State, does anyone know of any great geology programs in the USA that don't require or give very little weight to the GRE?

A of my prospective professors will be at GSA this year and asked if I was going. I don't know much about it, is there a fee to enter ? I'm debating whether I should go or not. It's in Baltimore which is a 6-7 hr drive from me and I'll probably have to get a hotel since my professors will be there on different days. Will I gain anything if I go and meet them? Two are from UT Austin which is a school I would really like to attend but it's going to be an uphill battle since this is my second time applying.

How are the other UT schools besides UT Austin ? I contacted someone from UT Dallas but he hasn't gotten back yet. UT Austin is a tough school to get into. 3 of us applied last year and none of us were admitted. I say it was because of my GRE scores being so pitiful but my advisor last year never mentioned them so I don't know. This time I'm applying to work with 11 people and I switched to a PhD. I to OP wish to live in Texas one day. Also don't apply to Baylor if your GRE scores are below the 50th percentile -_-. It's not a "minimum score" but apparently the dean of the graduate college won't let the department accept you. Wired how they do that crap at Baylor and not at the bigger schools like UT Austin. -
I did a couple problems everyday or almost everyday and I used ETS and Princeton

I bombed the GRE, again. 289, V 146, Q 143. Previous score 290, V 145, Q 145. This is going to be a major problem for me now as it will keep me out of a lot of schools. Baylor University for example will not take students below the 50th percentile in both sections (Even though the graduate school said they view everything holistically. If grad school truly was a holistic process, my GREs would not be a problem. I have a 3.78 GPA, graduated from a school that's number one in my field, have a senior thesis, have two majors and a minor, and have solid letters of rec. This will be my second time applying to grad school. First time I got two acceptances but without financial support. My advisor at UNL said that financial support will be dependent on my GRE scores which is total BS. I have two offers from UNL and Texas A&M. My new advisor at A&M was suppose to write me a letter of intent but I haven't heard back from him in a while even though I left in a message and sent him several emails. I'm reapplying to UT Austin (Will probably be rejected again :/ from a school I would really like to attend), Rice (Only reason why I'm reapplying is because to department waived the application fee), and Oklahoma State (the only program I know of the doesn't require the GRE). Does anyone else know of any geology programs in the USA that don't require or hold very little weigh to the GRE? If I take this test a third time I doubt that it will be beneficial. Should I ask one of my letter recommenders if he could add in his LOR that the GRE doesn't reflect my abilities to do well in grad school? I wrote a short essay and sent it to UT and Rice stating that I do not believe the GRE to be an indicator of my academic abilities. I was told that will help and this has been an issue for me going all the way back to the SAT and ACT.

So I'm taking the GRE for the second time on Monday. My first attempt was October 2014 where I scored a 290, V145 (21%), Q145 (25%), and a 4.0 AW (56%). These are obviously horrible scores that brought down my near perfect application. Although I did receive two offers, they were both without funding and I couldn't attend the schools due to finances. I'm going for geology so the programs probably care a lot more about the Q then the V section. So I spent my time studying for the Q section. I took both Q sections of the powerprep tests timed and I got a 148 Q on the first one and a 142 Q on the second. Monday can go either way now all I really want is an average score on the Q, that's it ! Do you guys have any advice? I've been using the Princeton review book and the Paterson book (which is really easy).

No. Since you're going for a humanities subject, they will most likely not care about the quantitative section. Contact your advisor is probably the best option -
I'll be taking the GRE for the second time Sept 28th, a week from Monday. Was wondering if there are any people from NJ, Staten Island or Brooklyn who would like to meet up and do last minute studying.

contact your advise and see what he or she says. They'll give you the best info

I don't think you could do that. If they're required you gotta send them
-
314 isn't that bad of a score do you think someone with a 290 will get into MIT ? No
-
It depends what you're going for. My advisor told me that most geology programs care only about the math section and could care less about verbal. If I had the same scores as you I would probably get tons of offers with financial support. I don't believe that the GRE is just used as a formality. I did horrible my first try (145V 145Q) and only got 2 offers with no financial support. Some of the schools I didn't get into (Rice and UW Madison) had big problems with my GRE and rejected me just because of that which is really pathetic and disgusting. I had two majors a minor and a thesis along with a 3.8 GPA. I busted my butt at a top public school and they didn't give a crap.
-
I had a similar situation. I just wrote a short essay that my GRE score does not reflect my abilities to do well in grad school. Someone from one of the departments said that it might help in the application process
-
I scored a 290 (145/145) first time. I took 3 practice tests and they were all around that mark. I'm taking the GRE the 28th of September. I wrote a short essay explaining that the GRE doesn't reflect my ability to do well in grad school. In my PS I wrote about my thesis (which I submitted as extra material), research interests, and what I did in some of my classes. I wanted to at least get an average score on the exam but it doesn't look like it will happen. This is what happened to me on the SAT but I still did fantastic in college. I can't find employment so Grad school is necessary. If I don't get an offer with funding I'll have to stick to being a cop which I really don't want to do. It's the only thing that I have set up now.
-
Unfortunately it doesn't seem like my score will improve by very much come the 28th of September when I take this thing for the second time. I really can't afford any tutoring services or a third take at the exam so I'm running out of options. What can I do that can alleviate this tests affects on my application ? If I don't get a grad school offer with financial support I'll be stuck living in my home state working as a cop :/ that's because with my majors, bio and geo, the job market is extremely small without a Grad degree

They wrote their letters already. I spoke to someone for Rice who said my approach will be helpful. She did say that the GRE is the first thing they look at and they usually will throw out an application if the quantitative score is low. The department is wavering the application fee so I'm going to reapply with the essay.
