I got into two graduate schools with funding and I wasn't crazy about them. I really would like to go somewhere down south in a large city or out west

I'm not interested in studying abroad. I asked U Miami and a staff member there did say that a professor wrote a letter for a student two years ago and they waivered the requirement. A lot of these schools said that they don't though unfortunately. Any other schools come to mind ?

Does anyone know of any programs that don't require the GRE or at least allow you to wavier it ? I know Oklahoma State doesn't require it but someone at my undergraduate institution said that either Arizona State or U Arizona also don't require it, is that true ? I don't think so because it's still listed as a requirement on their website. Do any Texas schools allow it to be wavered ?

I don't remember that so I guess either they do send that picture to schools or they keep it on file for when you retake the test. But this was from their website " If an institution that you have designated to receive your scores requests to see your photograph taken at the test center, ETS will send that photo or other information in ETS's files to that institution as necessary to detect or prevent unlawful activity and to protect the integrity of the GRE test."

I was told the photo is just to see that when you go on break you return as the same person lol. I don't think he's BSing because he scored in the 90th percentile and he's as dumb as nails. So I guess all one needs is a fake ID and I'm not going to lie, I would probably do what he did if I wasn't so afraid of getting caught. The GRE is horrible and a completely unfair way of comparing students for grad school.

Hey all. My friend is in the Air Force Reserves and they're giving him a lot of money for grad school. He wants to know if schools that won't accept you without funding will see this as a form of funding? I know if you come in with your own funding then your chances of getting in are 1,000x better, I mean why not you're giving the school money. So does this happen or does it depend on the school.

Has anyone ever heard about people taking the GRE for other people ? Is that even possible anymore ? I would imagine with the photo that they take and send to schools that you would have to have an identical twin to get away with it. When I took the GRE, they only asked for my ID and they took a photo of me. Is that photo just used to make sure that you return on break as the same person or do they keep it on file and send them to schools with your score report ? Apparently my friend paid someone to take the GMAT for him and I know the GMAT has the same security procedures as the GRE so I want to know if he's BSing me

UH didn't give you funding for a PhD ?! That's a bad deal and i wouldn't take it to be honest with you.

I actually did ask him but I don't think hes getting back to me on that so ill contact someone. But thanks everyone for the info it's going to be a big change !

Thanks for the info and I've heard of 39th street in OKC. It's supposedly the city's west village (the gay area in NYC). If your friend can provide anymore info that would be great! I plan on visiting Stillwater soon so I'll just get on grindr and ask people but I'm expecting to be A LOT different from NYC. We don't have Big Lots in NY but it seems with the price of furniture that a furnished apartment might be worth it. I'm still deciding on a lot of things but I think I'm definitely going to drive my jeep down there with all my cloths and stuff. The problem with roommates I guess is finding the right ones. I always wanted to live with other gay people but I'm sure I can figure something out. Do people travel to Dallas often from Stillwater ?

Hey I'll be heading to OK State in the fall and I'd like to know about what the best way is to find an apartment is? I know the cost of living is relatively cheap so what's a good price for a furnished apartment? I don't really want to go through the headache of buying furniture or a tv. I plan on driving down there from NYC which will be a big move so any info will help. Also how's the gay life in OK State ? I'm guessing non-existing lol. But what about OKC or Tulsa ? I know Dallas is a four hour drive away so that could be a weekend trip or something

Yes I do actually I know you haven't been to Stillwater in a while but what do you think is a good price for an apartment down there ? I've seen some that are furnished with 4 br for 559 a month. I don't know how I'll handle the furniture situation yet and unsure where and what to buy haha also Dallas is 4 hours away right ? I actually wanted to go to Texas but OK was the best thing I got. I'm also going to mention that I'm gay and I'm guessing OK for the most part will not approve of that ? Plus it looks like Stillwater is 20 hrs from where I live so that's going to be a drive lol

Hey all, So I'm pretty convinced that I'll be heading to Oklahoma State University (Stillwater) for my masters in geology but I'm concerned about how moving down there is going to go. First off, I live in NYC which is obviously far away and I never made a move this big before. I don't know what to bring, how to bring everything down there, or if I should bring my car down there. Another concern is the apartments. I spoke to one of my advisers grad students about this but he really wasn't helpful, he's married and lives with his wife so he didn't offer the best insight. Plus he didn't live exclusively off his stipend which for me will be about 822 dollars a month. Plus I think I'll get a little bit more from my fellowship if there is anything left over. I looked up apartments but I don't know which one's would be good for a grad student. I would like one that's furnished so I wouldn't have to buy furniture but if anyone has any advice on any of this please post

Oh ok they're the only university that's up in the air for me at this point. I think you asked about Rice? If you haven't heard anything at this point chances are they rejected you or at least that's what my POI said. UH does accept students without funding so you would have to pay I even think that they don't fund their master students at all which is why I applied for a PhD

Where and when did you find out about the offer from UH ?

That's what a POI of mine actually told me they said put that you want to be a professor on your application lol A lot of schools today want students who are interested in academia rather then O&G
