  1. Yeah... but they took my nail file soooooooo.....
  2. Your personal samples... or like research samples? My advisor got a job at Leed's my last semester and I had to move over 4000lbs of samples, billets, test tubes, glass slides, and international too. I got paid for it... so it was totally worth it. My personal collection moves with me everywhere. I probably have about 200 fist sized, and another 100 golf ball sized rocks right now... not including the vases full of small ones. Or my ammonite slices. It is a major pain to move.
  3. It appears to be perfectly fine. I did once bring back a head-sized chunk of unidirectional hornblende in a volcanic rock from a lava tube that I hiked into. They swabbed the shit out of that one. And then looked at me funny. I was kind of offended. lol.
  4. ROFL.... I just got back from vacation 3 days ago... and I swear to god they swabbed my nice fossiliferous limestone I was bringing back.
  5. Maybe it's really hard to make bombs out of deodorant. Apparently it's super easy to make them out of rocks though.
  6. My suitcase has been bomb swabbed every single time I've flown for about 2 years now. Literally every time. And I fly a lot. They always take out all of my rocks and swab them. Sooo... at the very most, some tsa person will swab your deodorant sticks lol.
  7. So they don't seem to have ready info on just architecture... but do for the school of design. http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/UPA/archives/admissions/finalasr_fall/adgr2014.htm That's the best I got though. A lot of uni's break it down by department, but I couldn't find that for you.
  8. Could be wrong... but if the TA-ship covers the cost of tuition... is that still considered "monetary compensation"? Just curious.
  9. This is a little different as it wasn't a grad school visit, but rather I had just transferred into the our geology dept. about 10 days prior, and was looking around an research groups and opportunities... and I swear to god, after finding something working under a phd candidate... I was informed that the project would obviously suck because said phd student only got where he was through affirmative action and being handed grant money he didn't actually deserve just for being black. I'd hate to see what they tell the grad students O.o Thankfully my advisor (and the phd student's advisor) ended up being super-duper awesome and I learned so much from him.
  10. ugh... I am soooo jealous... I still haven't heard anything about assistantships, or actually anything really. Let the overwhelmed feelings be happy
  11. @SgtP3pp3r But otherwise good advice Other than our disagreement about how bad it is But that's because I'm a mountain girl.
  12. How have you lived in BR for 2 years and never heard of Tigerland being unsafe? Everybody and their mom knows that you don't really want to live there unless you can't afford to go elsewhere. What's happening to Tigerland is the same thing that happened to the bar scene north of campus 30 years ago. Crime soars in Baton Rouge’s Tigerland area; bar owners, landlords struggling to keep peace http://theadvocate.com/news/14486122-133/crime-soars-in-baton-rouges-tigerland-area-bar-owners-landlords-struggling-to-keep-the-peace http://theadvocate.com/news/15350908-31/report-uptick-in-violent-crime-alcohol-offenses-in-tigerland-cause-law-enforcement-to-increase-prese In January, LSU tight end Dillon Gordon was stabbed multiple times at Reggie’s bar in Tigerland. The owner of Akasha Market, who was born and raised in the Gaza Strip, took an indefinite leave from her business after being terrorized at gunpoint and robbed of $5,000 on Jan. 4. There were also a string of incidents in Tigerland in 2015, including and a man allegedly pointing a loaded gun at customers outside a bar, an apparent parking lot rape and a report of shots fired in the air just outside one of the taverns.
  13. Seriously Lana, call Kenny Loggins because you're in the Danger Zone....
  14. Museums taught real science... not creationism and jesus-y "science"... so we weren't allowed to go to those on fieldtrips. However, my grandparents use to take me to the COSI museum. It was a super awesome hands on childrens museum. If you google it and look at pictures it still looks awesome even as an adult.
  15. My mother is very opinionated and at some point I realized that I am a god-damn adult making my own god-damn choices and I wasn't dependent on her anymore, so she didn't have the authority to decide things for me or to try and make me feel bad. If your parents see that interview and get "Shit... crazy hair" instead of "Yay, my kid is so awesome, look at what they did." then you need to put your foot down on where you stand in that relationship. But also... congrats That is super awesome.
  16. So please take this with a huge grain of salt... because I have never actually been there. I went to LSU for my undergrad. It was very common for "poorer" students (as in academically not financially) to apply to go to grad school at UL for environmental geo. The people with no undergrad research exp and not so stellar geology class grades would typically apply there and many got in. This doesn't necessarily reflect on the quality of the department, especially the petroleum side, its just the only information that I actually know. From what I understand they cater specifically to people trying to go into either oil or environmental. So if that is what you are going for then it is likely a good program for you. I know that their petroleum geo students have won some bigger awards recently, like the Imperial Barrel Award Competition.
  17. I'm still waiting for funding info from UH. I emailed them like a week and a half ago and haven't heard anything back. April 15th is creeping awfully close.
  18. So tigerland is just an area... if you google "tigerland baton rouge" it will actually pull up on google maps. What's your definition of a "bad commute" because we used to drive an hour+ to get to LSU lol. The Union food gets old really fast. There aren't really any healthy food options on campus, so if you are health conscious, be prepared to bring your own food. None of the Starbucks on campus are legit Starbucks... so they don't take gift cards. There is a dairy store in the middle of campus. It has some of the best ice cream whatever god you believe in has allowed to be created. The academic buildings close on game day saturdays because of the campus-wide tailgating. You wouldn't be able to drive there on those days anyways. The howe russel atrium, business building atrium, and art building atrium (no outlets) are all pretty great places to drink a quiet cup of coffee and take a breather.
  19. Well, anywhere near campus is very college-town-y with lots of parties and such. The more expensive, the less likely to have lots of crazy parties lol. It is very much a party school, especially on game day saturdays. There's an area called tigerland with bars and some apartments... not very safe, I would never live there. Also, there is not much around. The whole city is extremely boring unless you really like football, drinking, or stuff like fishing and hunting. I would suggest finding an apartment with a good gym in it or joining a nearby gym, because there aren't any outdoor activities to participate in. Hiking, climbing, beach, non-existent. Also, the less time you can spend outside getting to class or just the university in general, the better. Not only is it really hot, 90's throughout the summer... its the 75+ percent humidity that hits you like a wall and keeps your body from cooling down. Makes it feel a lot hotter that it is. Not sure if you are in Lawrence, Ka or at lawrence uni in wisconsin, but regardless, it will be a very hot adjustment if you haven't spent time in the south.
  20. I've heard that southgate tower and sterling burbank were nice, safe, etc. Woodlands of baton rouge is also really nice. I lived in a house off of campus, so I never personally lived in any of the apts, I've just heard what others have to say.
  21. If you would prefer a roomie... There's a facebook page, I think its LSU marketplace, or LSU buy and sell, or something like that. People post roomie and apartment ads up pretty regularly, although more so at the end/beginning of a semester.
  22. I did for my undergrad, and my mother is faculty there. I am the type of person to visit sooner rather than later. Also, the big thing with looking in may for an August start has to do with coordinating roommates. If you are not doing that, then it doesn't really matter how early you start
  23. So, a lot of the apts around are college town apts, so a lot of the tenants wont even be out, meaning you wont really know what's available, but there's no reason you can't visit anyways.
