How to address professor over email?
sjoh197 replied to muteswann18's question in Questions and Answers
Unless you know her well outside of this application, I would continue to address her as professor X unless she specifically say "you can call me firstname." -
If you haven't been invited, or heard any other news, there's a good chance you aren't being invited or accepted. There is still some time to be invited, but not much. Also, some people get accepted without an interview invite, but it depends on your program and the school.

It's been two weeks since applications were due.... and my status hasn't even changed from complete
-
There's only 12 days left to apply. It's a cool program and opportunity, but there's really not a lot of time to hurry up and figure this out. Do you already have people who can write you a rec. letter within the next week?

Fish are cool too. My cat is probably one of the most spoiled cats in existence. But its totally worth it. https://www.flickr.com/photos/139963155@N07/shares/da0v1w

I've trained my cat that if I lay down in the bed and she comes and lays down on me and snuggles... I will give her a greenies treat. She loves greenies treats.

Should I broach the issue of a low GPA with a potential advisor?
sjoh197 replied to Bos taurus's question in Questions and Answers
This wold be great in another thread... but I sent out many emails and only ever had one person not respond. This is what I wrote with all of the details obviously removed. It was longer once you included the meat of the email, but not so long that it was a drag. I am an XXX student at XXX. I have been looking at your XXX work and am extremely interested in the research you have done. I have participated in XXX research under my advisor, Dr. XXX. All of my work has been an attempt to XXX. I am interested in continuing XXX research through a graduate degree, and would like to ultimately pursue a PhD. I am simply writing to inquire if you are taking any students for next fall. If so, I would love to hear back and talk about your potential future interests in XXX work, and if not, then thank you for your time. -
I just had an hour long snuggle session with the soft white tummy fur of my cat and am now eating a chocolate chip cookie for breakfast. Despite being quite sick right now... I can say without a doubt that I am very happy.

What were you doing when you received your acceptance?

Dreaming... :/ -
My step dad would show up at my apt at 830 in the morning for shits and ask about cars parked in front of my building lol.I remember him telling me that if I ever married my then boyfriend he would never come :/ Too bad for him because we're still together 3.5 years later, and he is no longer welcome in my life. At least you have been able to manage your father. Mine was really wacky and I had to shut out the toxicity.

Oh man, do I remember this. My ex step father (who has since been evaluated as Paranoid Personality Disorder) used to send 20 texts at a time and if you didn't answer a call he would just keep calling and calling and calling. He once called me 11 times during an exam. 11 times. Was it an emergency? No. He just couldn't understand why a college student wouldn't answer their phone immediately at his will. Glad I don't have to deal with that anymore.

What to wear on campus visit for females? (with pictures)
sjoh197 replied to June_cosmo's topic in Interviews and Visits
if the suit I black go with colored. Black sit white shirt is the ultimate in formality. Think tuxedo lol. Pant suits are usually considered a bit formal for campus interview days, but if its cold, I think they are fine. Bring a more casual outfit... Like khakis for if there id something like a bar mingle after (common in my field). Also, if you don't actually own a pant suit. Just go with the khaki slacks and a nice blouse. -
I don't know about other people's fields, but our subject forum is significantly less frequented this year, with a huge decrease in the amount of people posting in the application/admission profile thread. We discussed that perhaps there are fewer people applying this year? The economy has turned pretty poorly for a large portion of our field, and grad school isn't looking as appealing to some. Could result in quicker turn around times maybe?

Since you are in earth/planetary science, I would personally say neither. I am in earth science, although geology not geography, and I would suggest dress pants and a nice blouse. If its cold... You could get away with a pantsuit, although gray or navy (ie not black) would help it be less formal. If pants aren't an option due to religion, or even preference, a business style pencil/suit skirt with a nice blouse like the one you have above would work, although all black can be formal. Try a different colored blouse instead. I would definitely say no to the dress. I personally love wearing dresses, but unfortunately for women, dressing really feminine can make people have odd biases towards you in first impressions. -
I just made awesome GF chocolate chip cookies and am watching HTTYD again with my awesome toothless hat on.... Because I'm sick and I can do what I want.

4 years ago, I got a Q149/V158 what should I do different this time?
sjoh197 replied to dmacfour's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
Your verb score looked pretty good, but regardless, I found that printing out the top 100 gre vocab and going over them at random times over a period of a few weeks really boosted my verbal score (I managed to get a 165). The vocab is pretty predictable and there are tons of websites with consistent lists. Also, really learning the style of the quant section is important. Do a lot of practice tests. I bought books with tons of practice tests in them. And the advice about skipping over problems you can't do quickly and coming back to them is really great advice. -

I actually hate the "No news is good news" too. But that's because my uni sends out rejects after acceptances (I think that's the case with a lot of schools) So no news is just a pending rejection. -
@wongjcz Hello, I would like submit my application for a Pdf in social welfare.... as you can see, I've already received my .docx degree from Microsoft, and am currently working on getting my JPEG. Rofl... you made my day. Sorry for poking at your misery.

You appear uncomfortable with this situation... so you could always say "I am uncomfortable staying with a man." I personally wouldn't be bothered at all... but I am not you, and I am not going lol.
