We've wined, we've waited, now it's time to celebrate 2016

See, I don't watch tv. In fact, I had to convince the att uverse lady that I did actually want to cancel my tv because I hadn't watched it the entire year I had it. Next week we won't even have tv in the apt. I watch my weekend night-time movies (I can't drink or go to parties or clubs/bars) So after-dinner movies are really about as fun as the weekend gets. -

I liked the books as a kid, and like the first 3 movies, but then lost interest. And I could rewatch LotR and How to train your dragon for the rest of my life and still love them lol. -

I would say that I have realistically seen each LotR movie about 100 times each. Saw the first one when I was 7 and have never looked back. I've seen about 80% of the Star Trek Next Generation. I'm actually watching Star Wars as we speak. And I don't really like Harry Potter. -

I've been trapped inside most of the weekend due to the memorial weekend parties going on out at our pool and grill. I'm ready for everyone to just go back to their own damn complexes lol. -
Advice on how to deal with a truly terrible classmate
sjoh197 replied to falala's topic in Officially Grads
My true and honest suggestion would be to remove yourself from the situation unless some new threat of bodily harm that comes up against your friend. A,B,C, and D are all adults and will have to navigate this on their own. If they do so by acting like hormone enraged high-schoolers, then so be it. Support your friend in whatever way you see privately fit. It is incredibly unprofessional for you to be involved in this drama. As per the question, you are not really equipped to deal with this situation... ( And its not really your situation to deal with) So guide your friend to some campus resources and then stop involving yourself with person C at all. -
My car is currently a decade old and has 275,000 miles on it. I take very good care of it and it still runs very well. My philosophy is that I will continue to drive it until it becomes unreliable or incurs repairs that cost more than the car's worth. Does your new city have any form of public transport as a backup? I know that at least if my car broke down, I could ride the train/bus to get to school until I found a new used car to buy. That makes a huge difference.

I jumped around like a cat who just got bacon for breakfast when I got a TA offer. Any funding is a step towards my ultimate goal and I have no qualms putting in the time and work required to be a TA if it means that I get to fulfill my life and academic goals. -

True... There are many paths in life, and many will not reach any form of poise or self control. All someone has to do is make popcorn and I lose all self control. -

Having kids and being poor are usually the 2 fastest ways to get there lol. -

That really sucks... But at least they were good enough to offer a match rather than just say... "Our mistake" and drop it. -

No... don't be a spider killer. Spiders want to be your friend, the just don't know how to tell you. My little red-knee will be friends with you any day. -

That really sucks with your pards parents. We like to call those kinds of people f-in laws. Lol. -
I liked having the name in the header, so that if it was being passed around or got disconnected from my file, it could be easily replaced without having to print a new one. It also made sure my name was very prevalent when it was being read. Or at least, that was my thinking. There are a lot of really really good threads on the topic of what to include in your SOP, Some of the best advice I've seen is from Intextrovert on the pinned board at the top "mistakes to avoid". It's on the first page. I would really just focus on what you've done, what you've learned from it, and what you want to do in grad school and beyond. You don't need a story. When you talk about your research experience, remember that almost everything is a learning experience and even basic research tasks that may not have seemed important, can be put in a very positive light. For example, I spent my first semester of undergrad research doing really basic labwork,... grinding up samples, using a centrifuge, etc. But I presented it in a way that I was "Learning about the realities of error in lab work that could potentially affect results, and that I had learned to not underestimate this effect in my future graduate studies." Write everything in your favor.

I'm starting to feel bad for my car lol. It's got 175,000 miles on it and I'm getting disappointed in not utilizing my city's public transportation. I guess if I save that 20 cents in jar everyday I can put it towards a new car in the end. -

It's not the campus station... its the stations I have to get off at in between. Unfortunately, there's no bus that runs directly from campus to anywhere near my house. I think it would be nice to be able to use public transit... but I don't know who to actually talk to about the safety of the stations. At least the train station is actually on the edge of campus property and only transfers in the middle of downtown which is pretty safe. IDK.... just can't decide if I should just drive. It's not like the public transit is free, so I'd still be paying $1.20 a day to get to and from campus. -

I've thought about the bus here, but its really sitting and waiting at the stations at night I'm not too sure about. UH I right in the 3rd Ward and there's a lot of crime in the area. They keep the campus really safe, but the minute you step out, the area nosedives. I have people follow me home in broad daylight (especially with the rampant homeless population). So I'm also worried about walking home from the bus station. A 15-20 minute walk. Idk. Maybe I'm too paranoid. -

I would, but not in the dark through the ghetto lol. That $350 isn't worth me getting assaulted or dying. Seems dramatic, but I get harassed almost every time I leave my apartment now as it is. -

Ugh... $350 for a parking pass to the University. And it's only 3 miles away. Oh how I wish I could just take the train there everyday. But alas... my courses will run past dark and the train runs through the ghetto. Maybe with our new campus carry policy starting... I can get my CC and feel safer. -

I shop at 2 of the more expensive thrift stores here. But almost all of the stuff is brand name... banana republic, express, ann taylor, etc. And its almost all in great condition... no tears, stains, missing buttons, anything. I get so many compliments on the things I get there. -

@hippyscientist Sorry that things are going kinda rough :/ On a completely opposite note... things are all finally falling into place for me. I got my TA info. An apartment finally opened up at the complex we want to move to... 2 days before we want to move. I got an awesome $15 lamp on craigslist. And I'm finally replacing parts of my wardrobe that really don't fit or that I've had for so long that they don't match my more conservative/professional style now. Spent $60 at the 2 thrift stores and came back with 4 express, talbots, and h&m shirts, a skirt and an awesome polka-dot dress. And I found someone to buy all of my tarantulas for sale.
