  1. Bubble wrap and newspaper for not so fragile stuff. A combo of bubble wrap and packing peanuts for glass and fragiles. This eBay site has some good tips. http://www.ebay.com/gds/Packaging-glass-for-shipping-/10000000178500644/g.html For textbooks, just buy a thicker box and reinforce with tape. We shipped over 3000lbs of rocks internationally and used regular cardboard boxes with tape on the inside, 4 rows of tape on each outside edge, tape on the corners, and then wrapped them in that cellophane-y type stuff they wrap luggage in. When we move, its sometimes easier to buy different color tape for kitchen, bathroom, clothes, other. Since the kitchen and bathroom stuff usually needs to be unpacked first. Otherwise our "labeling system" continues to be a letter for the room it goes in, unless its something that needs to be unwrapped quickly, or is needed for daily life, then it gets the contents written on the outside. I obviously wouldn't do that if you're shipping, but a letter-number system with an Excel file wouldn't hurt. Computers and electronics can be damaged by heat, but also your disk drive can be damaged by the bouncing of your trunk. Unless you are planning to bubble wrap it too... I would put in a padded backpack in the from with you.
  2. So.... My partner and i just watched this because we couldn't resist. It was so hilariously awful and awesome at the same time. I feel so bad for the people whose childhood didn't include the phrase... "IT'S MORPHIN TIME!"
  3. Yeah... he didn't. We actually never saw him again in the research group or the department for that matter. Although I did see him elsewhere on campus once. But the point is that you have to screw up really really hard to be a failure lol.
  4. I will because I always have and I likely always will. I met many "important" people who have changed my research and study opportunities, many of which I met by chance at the time. I am happy that I was well dressed and professional looking, rather than in sweatpants and a t shirt. Would this have changed anything? IDK. But i never meet anyone unexpectedly and then wish I didn't look sloppy... Because I don't look sloppy unless I'm in the field. (And if you don't look sloppy in the field.. Then you're not doing it right lol.) That doesn't mean I'm dressed to the nines. Just business casual with brushed hair and light makeup. I do a lot of thrift store shopping to keep my closet full. Solid colored shirts and printed skirts, lots of light dresses, etc. Bb cream instead of foundation. Chapstick instead of constant lipstick. Leave my hair to do its own thing. My hair and makeup routine takes less than 20 minutes. And my shower takes less than 10. Makes for a pretty easy morning.
  5. I also live in texas and I agree with the others about changing... But maybe you could look into nylon hiking pants. You could even get the convertible zipper kind that zip off at the knees for the rest of day. Not necessarily fashionable, but I wear them backpacking and hiking and have never had any issues with sweat or chafing. They are lightweight, wicking, and breathable. You can get them pretty cheap on ebay-usually lightly used($20-25) The new ones are typically hella expensive though ($65-100) so you'ld have to be willing to go the used route.
  6. I don't like it when people try to touch my hair. Or tell me to donate it? And honestly... The more conservative clothing hasn't changed anything other my own feelings about myself. We could all probably walk around in potato sacks and get bothered lol.
  7. Although budgeting apps can be great in their own way... If you are not actually good at budgeting yet, these apps will only act as a crutch that will eventually fail. Rather, I would suggest starting with a personal finance book... Like "How to manage your money when you don't have any" http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1475044038/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1465074433&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=budgeting&dpPl=1&dpID=410M6DqjTEL&ref=plSrch Its a small investment for important skills that you need for the rest of your life. My partner (the engineer) makes all of the money in our household. He has no idea what happens to it, where it goes, when the bills are due, what the bills even are. I do all of it... Not because I'm controlling, but because he's super terrible at it and is still learning how to budget correctly. He is much happier now that his debt is going down, all of the bills are paid on time, and he is still well fed and doesn't have to worry about overdrafting because he bought another videogame.
  8. I have tried to dress in a more conservative fashion as time goes by. I seem to draw plenty of unwanted attention since I'm usually dressed up "always." And my ample chest and butt seem to make it soooo much worse. And for some reason lots of men like to come up to me and comment on my hair and use it as a conversation piece... or they try to touch it.
  9. Shit... I haven't laughed that hard in a while.
  10. I am a master budgeter. It is one of my better qualities.
  11. See I wouldn't like that freezing cold, but a moderate climate... Or even dry heat, would be good for me. I don't mind the heat so long as its not 80-90% mid-day humidity like it is here. Makes me feel like I'm suffocating.
  12. @hippyscientist It has been so nice here the last couple of days temperature wise. It has been in the low 80's. Nevermind that it has been thunderstorming and "flash-flooding" for 3 days straight. It's not 95 out, and I'm happy. Last year the summer here got up to 106 with a heat index of 114, so I'm enjoying my springtime while it lasts.
  13. Your biggest problem is that your partner isn't really working with you. So, rather than asking her to change her schedule, which is a difficult change, ask her to change her approach to coming home. You say you can't sleep when she is "moving around and the lights are on." Ask her to be more quiet. Get more lamps, and night lights. Try to get her to understand that she is waking you up. And if she does come in loudly, rather than just toss and turn, make sure to actually get up and explain that she is being really loud. Sometimes its hard to gauge what is loud to someone who is awake vs what is loud to someone who is trying to sleep. Get a table fan that is loud. If you fill your room with white noise, it makes it easier to not wake up from noises outside. It might take some getting use to , but it definitely helps. We have an older version of this fan http://www.amazon.com/Holmes-Blizzard-8-Inch-Oscillating-Table/dp/B000J07RMU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1464959291&sr=8-2&keywords=holmes+blizzard+fan. And it is awesome. Employ the use of a low dose sleep aid. There are many that are non habit forming and you can do some research and find which one is best for you. And as a last resort, if you really can't get her to be any more quiet, or try to help you with a more consistent scheduling, do you have a friend or family member's couch that you could crash on once or twice? As a message, not a solution. Perhaps seeing that you would rather sleep elsewhere than not get sleep due to her being noisy at all hours, she would be more open to finding other solutions.
  14. I don't even remember including a middle name. It shouldn't be a problem. But you can always call ahead if you are really concerned.
  15. @MarineBluePsy @hippyscientist I don't know what they are going to do. I just saw the mri report. I've been bracing my ankle for quite some time, along with ice and tylenol. I have such bad genes, that if anyone is going to have an extra bone, it's going to be me lol.
  16. So apparently I have an extra bone in my foot lol.
  17. Our research group had a PhD student in the middle of a project, and my advisor brought back all of these rocks from Australia. Cost thousands of dollars to go collect them and ship them back. He told the PhD student to run some geochemical tests on the rocks... which requires the rocks to be crushed into a fine powder. In the middle of a large research meeting, it came out that he had crushed the entire rock. Now anyone im science knows that you don't use the entirety of your sample to run one test, when you have lots more tests to run. (lol) He didn't do this for one rock... he did this for all of the rocks. Every single one. Gone. Forever. Thousands upon thousands of dollars ground up into dusty powder... No billets, no thin sections, no nothing. So it became a running joke throughout our research group that you couldn't really be doing too bad so long as you hadn't crushed all the rocks. So Fuzzy, just try not to crush all the rocks.
  18. When we sold our last car, we had thousands of dollars in cash, and we were literally throwing it around like they do in movies. Then we became extremely paranoid because it was a holiday weekend and the bank wouldn't be open for 2 days. So we had thousands of dollars just sitting in our apartment. We hid the cash deep inside one of our tarantula cages and figured 1. no criminal would look there and 2. if they did they would get bit.
  19. A lot of unis that give you an RA or a TA also offer out of state tuition waivers. Ask your department about this. Are you going for a Masters or a Phd? Is the 24k per year? Per semester? Total? Because longterm costs could make it more worthwhile to reapply elsewhere for more aide. Warelin's advice for roommates and free food are always good
  20. And if nobody know's that I'm a TA, then I can be a secret government agent, ahem.. employee.
  21. OMG I think you're my hero. After looking at the roller-bags... I remembered that some time ago, we were given a brand new codi roller-bag that has been sitting up in our closet forever. I just pulled it out, and this is it. Do you think it would work? It's supposed to be for like really nice business people, but... https://www.codiworldwide.com/products/laptop-cases/wheeled/mobile-max-tall-17-3-wheeled-case-details
  22. I've wondered about that, but I've never actually talked to anyone that owns one. Do you know if they're practical? They're not cheap, so I don't want to get one if they're awkward.
  23. See, I really don't know. I would have definitely had to have had the third one for my undergrad because I had to carry 12 hours worth of crap around for classes, labs, research, lunch etc. every day. But I have now been banished from doing this because of the problems it caused my back. And I will find out if I need surgery on my ankle tomorrow... so there's that. Now I will be TA-ing and taking 3 classes. But I will have my car parked nearby. And eventually I might have an office, right? I love the color of the first one, but I like the shape/pockets of the second one, and the durable-looking-ness of the third one lol. That's why I need help.
  24. So I'm picking up a new backpack soon... since my old one ripped before my last semester of undergrad, and I had to make do. I think I'm going to get an amazon basics backpack...since I don't have a lot to spend. So which of these three would you guys get? http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-ZH1508073D-Classic-Backpack-Aqua/dp/B013TGF9YS/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1464713460&sr=8-9&keywords=backpack+amazonbasics http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Laptop-Backpack-15-Inch-Laptops/dp/B00EEBS25Q http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Explorer-Laptop-Backpack-15-Inch/dp/B011J4BUFY/ref=sr_1_4?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1464713142&sr=1-4&nodeID=360832011&keywords=laptop+backpack&refinements=p_36%3A-3000
