  1. To see your status go to the status checking website (http://www.grad.gatech.edu/status-checking) and then log in. Once you are in go to View Checklist. You should see something like Application Status To Dept For Review. Which is my status for MS CS app for them.
  2. Actually a lot of schools in the US are the same. Georgia Tech (a nickname that is also a misnomer) is a university with colleges, such as the College of Computing. Inside the College of Computing there are 3 schools (CSE, CS, and IC). Anyway, I'm pretty sure your transcript says what University you went to so even if you called it a potato they will see that it isn't a potato but a University (but don't call it a potato because I'm pretty sure you won't get admitted).
  3. Hi! So while I was in school I asked, if the time ever came where I would need a letter, if the professors would be willing to write one for me. 3 years later (for one of the professors, more like 5 for the other. I used a professional reference for my third and fourth letters) I sent emails out to reconnect. I reminded them who I was and when I took courses with them and then asked if they would be willing to discuss writing lors for me. They both remembered me and were happy to (one required some reminding but it all worked out on getting letters in on time). Anyway, if they remembered me after almost half a decade I'm sure you are still somewhere in their minds after 1 year. Just email (some say call or visit. I like to give people time to make a decision) and ask if they would be willing to discuss writing you some letters. Maybe include a project or paper you did in their class to jog their memories.
  4. I guess my over-analyzed email is one from the graduate coordinator asking if I would like my application changed from MS to MS/PhD because they can only offer funding for MS/PhD applicants. I said yes w/ explaining why I only applied to MS in the first place, but there hasn't been a day that I haven't reread those emails trying to figure out if it is a good sign or just a "oh by the way we only fund MS/PhD students". I mean... is it?
  5. How bout that Georgia, Georgia Tech game last year? Hey I've been in the industry for almost 4 years now, sometimes* you just have to tough it out and think of the bigger picture. Once this challenge is out of your way you can move on to bigger and better things. * by sometimes I mean all the time...
  6. I mean there are 2 ways to look at this. - From his point of view (and admissions' point of view) you applied to that school because you wanted to go there. An offer with financial aid to a school you want to go to? Why would you ever turn that down? - From your point of view you don't want to rush into anything without being sure (this is years and years of dedication). So an extra month to make sure this is the place for you doesn't sound like asking for too much. There are obviously risks/rewards with both. Is being 100% sure on your choice of school worth the x% chance they rescind your offer? If it is, then definitely explain to them that you would like some more time to mull over their offer (you don't even have to mention that the reason for time is so you can hear from other schools). If they say no? Then you have to make the tough decision on taking the offer you have over the offers you may or may not get. There is a saying for this exact situation though, "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush".
  7. April 15th is the usual (Vande specifically has that date on their prospective students page). A few posts here recently have said schools have tried to force earlier though. Is this a school in the US?
  8. Where were you in 2014? Emory got several American Ebola patients flown in during the outbreak. I'm sure lots of research data to be had for people interested in infectious diseases and epidemics.
  9. The letter being relevant is probably important. You will be doing research and courses in your major, so how you are perceived by a professor in that major is the whole reason for the letters. I don't think they necessarily have to be the most prestigious professor in the world though. I would rather get a great letter from a professor that isn't as well known than a mediocre one from a superstar, but that is just me. Plus you never know if the admission committee knows the professor writing for you. Even someone you might think isn't as well known might be well respected by someone on the committee. I would just get the best, relevant letters you can get.
  10. If you are confident in your app, don't let a school bully you into making the wrong decision for yourself.
  11. I think Dr. Who is supposed to be bad in the same way Sharknado is bad, or any B-Movie really. I don't know why Dr. Who is successful and Firefly was cancelled but... whatever, I'm not bitter... at all... Though Dr. Who isn't nearly as bad as The Big Bang Theory without their laugh track is.
  12. I used to visit a site that would rate universities based on criteria you would select (like amount of publications, research activity, etc), but I haven't been able to find it again...
  13. Look at the schools you are interested in and see what their average for admitted students is (schools like UMN-TC publishes theirs in a spreadsheet). This is a pretty sweet graph by Magoosh about average GRE scores per admitted applicants in different fields...
  14. Yea it is hard to know exactly what they want in the scores. From what I've seen on admission pages V+Q is more important than the W section but I would figure your ability to analyze and write about topics is more important than knowing what 'Fastidious' means. Though the Verbal sections do have some analytical aspects to them as well so... 4th time maybe?
  15. The committees are going to see your grades on your transcript regardless of their mention in a LOR. That said, look for recommenders who will give you a "good" letter of recommendation (make sure you say "a good letter, favorable letter, etc" in your request to them). Why not ask the professors who taught the classes you have done well in?
  16. Is Ferrari judged poorly due to their lack of mini-van, commuter car, etc prowess? If someone is looking for a specific field, they are looking for that specific field. I have a hard time believing someone who wants a pure mathematics person will say "wow you are really good at exactly the thing we wanted, but your school isn't known for the things we don't want so, we won't be able to offer you a position...".
  17. ETS should give you a free retest but time isn't on your side obviously. Not in general, some professors curve exams, but grading the class entirely on a curve is something I've never seen before. Usually the applications tell you to just put your GPA as it is stated on your transcripts, any calculations are done by them. Though if the application accepts "Other" documents you could try explaining the grading done at your school.
  18. If MS CS... Deadlines for GaTech is on Feb 1st, University of Minnesota and NCSU are in march for unfunded offers. Most PhDs deadlines for next fall have already passed. There are some schools that do spring admission though that you can start looking into just in case.
  19. I mean phdcomics states that your main job as a postdoc is to figure out what to do after your postdoc expires...
  20. I hope the email asking me to change my MS application to MS/PhD is a good sign...

    1. iphi

      iphi

Yes how would that not be? They want you to do more (and probably have a chance at funding)!

  21. Depends on where you are sending them. The US is a really big place and even the same company has different experiences depending on what coast you are sending it to. UPS and Fedex are the biggest package carriers here and I generally have good experiences with both (I order from Amazon a lot). That said I've also have had problems with both (the UPS problems weren't really their fault but the fault of the state government for not being ready for an ice storm). Since you are applying to the west coast only it seems, look up UPS and Fedex (and DHL, they really don't have much of a presence where I live so I don't have much experience with them) reviews from those areas and see who seems most reliable. Just don't use Lasership... I don't even know how they are still a business here.
