  1. Try Zillow, crime maps, school ratings, ForRent, services like Promove (they are a free service that make a kickback when you put their name on your application, basically a real estate agent. They exist in ATL only but I assume there are similar services in Chicago), or if you want to pay a real estate agent. It is really hard to not be there and see it for yourself. Some large complexes have virtual tours though. That could help too. Worst case you pick wrong the first time and find a better apartment 12 months later, but with all the resources above you should at least get into a decent place for you.
  2. Are the MS schools ones you would like to do your PhD at? The reason I applied to MS was because I know my application is probably not very strong for a PhD at the schools I applied for, but I know that most of them have an internal way to convert to PhD (or continue on to after your thesis) that I hope to do. Most are basically petitions signed by your advisor. So if some of those MS schools are ones you would like to do your PhD at, why not go that route to strengthen your application (or even continue on)?
  3. Hotline Miami 2 is out :-)
  4. I would think that University exams are valid excuses to not serve (I know Yahoo answers isn't the greatest source but apparently some people have seen students get out due to exams), your professor probably knows more though (I assume you aren't their first student to be summoned). Worst case you have to appear, just wear a shirt with "I <3 Jury Nullification" on the front of it. They should dismiss you shortly.
  5. Is it possible that attending did have a bearing on your acceptance? Just not in a positive way?
  6. What I did was thank them for their offer, ask a couple of questions involving certain things (TA/RA, converting to PhD as I app'd to MS, etc) and then thanked them again and told them that I will let them know shortly about my decision (which I assume they know is, "I'm weighing my options and waiting for all those options to come in").
  7. So far I have asked whoever sent the email to accept me about those positions. They all explained how it is done in their department.
  8. I personally just always copy their sign off / signature when I reply. So if they say Dear Me, Blah Blah. Love, Dr. First Name Last Name I will reply with Dear Dr. First Name Last Name. If they say Dear Me, Blah Blah. Love, First Name. Then I reply Dear First Name. I'm not sure this is the correct way about doing it but I've just always assumed you will call yourself what you want to be called in correspondence.
  9. These questions are probably better answered by the DGS at UVA. Generally non-thesis degrees (be they called a different name like ME, MR, etc) require a few more courses to complete than thesis degrees (MS). From the schools I've applied to you take 6-9 hours of thesis but non-thesis would take another 6-9 hours of courses instead. Some non-thesis degrees still have a final project/paper/etc that you present/defend but that could be answered by UVA (especially the placement questions) better than I could answer it.
  10. I'm sitting on my three because I haven't decided yet (and haven't heard from everyone). I don't think people declining will automatically get the wait listed people asking accepted. I seriously doubt anyone is thinking of you (angry wait listed poster) when making a decision that impacts their entire life. The schools give us until April 15th for a reason.
  11. Then you'll have to move off of this planet. Differing opinions (whether through ignorance or otherwise) will forever exist on Earth. Good news though, I heard Mars University has a good Psych program.
  12. If you are too good for Stanford what are you supposed to do? I guess you would have to start your own university at that point. I think people take rejections way too personally (though I guess they are judging your personal accomplishments and future goals so it is personal). Sometimes a school just doesn't have room for you for whatever reason. Being sassy about it isn't going to change things.
  13. There are jobs I want that have a minimum requirement of MS (and then later on in the same track, of PhD). Business Insider would definitely make it onto a Top 10 useless websites list.
  14. So then it is acceptable after some acceptances to mention them in an email that is requesting your status? I don't want the response to be "fine, go there then".
  15. There was a thread here recently about it (someone who was for it and asked why paragraphs of asking "does anyone know this" were being deleted from a results search). I got downvoted for saying Whatever, reporting those non-result results posts as spam seems to work in getting the clutter removed from the search.
  16. I wanted to test this theory. You see I <3 Windows (mostly because gaming) and I <3 Android because of 100 different reasons, but when I would tell my GF that she should move on from iPhone to Android (or share on forums/disqus why Android is a better choice) it would just be cast aside as fanboism. So I bought an iPhone 6+. I can now say after having experience with both that android is better. Pretty nice camera though.
  17. This is me but with every email that causes my phone to notify me (I use Google Inbox so only priority emails and financial ones notify my phone). Just the sound of a vibration puts me on edge and then I see it is Amazon asking me to rate some salt.
  18. Well I got an "any moment now" and that took a week to get the result. Soon could be months!
  19. I don't think silly questions are a reflection of what he thinks of your future. During an interview to be a software developer I was asked a few "silly" questions that I probably wasn't supposed to be able to answer (I got one right and knew enough about the other to have satisfied the 'silly' question portion), but it showed my thought process which is important when you have to solve problems daily.
  20. Contact them and ask about potential funding. One of my unfunded MS offers told me that most MS students do get funding once they are on campus. That professors like to get to know the students during the first semester before committing to RA/TA. PhD is different though since it lasts more than 1.5 - 2 years, so worst case with an unfunded MS it is just 2 years of collecting debt. If you get the vibe that you won't be getting assistance quickly while at Temple you will have to accept that you will be collecting debt for 4-5 years (and I'm not sure English teacher will be able to pay off that much debt quickly). Perhaps do your MA first and then try to get better offers for a PhD when you complete it (my intention on apping to MS programs was to make my PhD applications stronger) ?
  21. Does anyone have advice / a sample on what to say when inquiring about status? I've received 3 admits but would like to know from 2 on my list before I make any decisions. So I don't want to ask purely for my status but maybe for a timeline on when I might know my status? Also should I mention my admits and that my decision is depending on their decisions?
  22. 3/3 now. Still no word from the two top (I guess I have a 1a and 1b school and then the rest are 2a-f depending on potential funding/continuing on to phd process). Still this has been a pretty good start to the weekend.

You're on a roll! I'm sure their answers will come in soon.

Heck yes! You said it, friend. This is a blessing!

  23. I know that there is some kind of mythical status surrounding the Ivy League, but I think that Stanford is "way more prestigious" than Princeton in 2015.
  24. 2/2 so far :-). Fighting the urge to email the others asking for a timeline so I can make a decision asap :-(.

Do it. Some schools encourage it. They know they'd appreciate prompt responses, so many are willing to give that helpful info.

  25. Some states don't have an income tax, other states take everything (not just money) from you (California). You have to look at your state and their tax laws as well as federal taxes.
