  1. definitely appropriate!
  2. Hang in there. It'll happen -- whether it's now or in the future.
  3. Same here. Same here.
  4. You're right -- we are going to be okay! Thanks for the reminder. It's easy to be hard on yourself and feel low during this time. But I keep trying to be optimistic and I needed to hear something positive right now and luckily I saw your post! Good luck
  5. ???? really? Well, congrats to them and I'll keep my fingers crossed!
  6. Sorry to hear that. There's still hope I'm sure!
  7. It's weird, I actually really like my job but that doesn't mean I'm not ready to start hearing from schools and get accepted into a PhD program (in Public Health or Soc). And I'm still refreshing my email inbox about every 10 minutes. Makes me feel a little crazy but that's just how it goes I guess.
  8. I wish I knew
  9. Maybe that means they made a decision? Or that they reviewing applications one last time before they send out letters? Sorry I'm not more help -- I've never heard that status before.
  10. For a PhD in public health I know experience matters to some extent -- how long have you been working in the public health field and what type of work have you done, etc. So age matters in the sense that the older you are, the more experience you have.
  11. I definitely think it's okay to ask when they expect to make a decision especially since you have two other offers -- or, you could try what I've done, which is ballpark that answer by looking at the results page. But that's not always reliable considering it can change from year to year, but still, it helps.
  12. I agree -- I think at this point it can still mean anythbing. I mean, maybe people who haven't heard anything (like me) are alternates or a school's second choice and then people will hear of acceptances after the schools hears the decisions from the the first round of acceptances and that's why you have to wait until March sometimes to hear a decision.
  13. I got my first rejection letter a couple of weeks ago -- from the same school/department I got my Master's. It's the only school I've heard from too so it's hard to stay hopeful. I keep thinking "hope for the best and expect the worst". I still can't decide if no news is good news for all the other schools I have yet to hear from.

    AGONY

Agreed! And then on top of that, what makes it even more frustrating is knowing that other people are hearing from schools. Even if these people didn't apply to the same program/school I find that it drives me even crazier!!!
  15. I'm still waiting to hear from UNC-Chapel Hill, Michigan Soc, Columbia Sociomedical, Harvard, and Vanderbilt. We'll see!
  16. Congrats on your acceptance to Hopkins by the way!!
  17. Thanks for letting us know!
  18. Congrats on UNC HBHE! How did you hear? Letter, email, phone? Lucky you know something so far -- I haven't heard anything!
  19. I was in Health Behavior & Health Education but I took a couple of Health Management and Policy course. Very good but tough. I heard that the PhD training is very different than the MPH training here in that you get way more faculty time. Of the people I know in the PhD program here, at least in my department, they love it!
  20. Haha! Yes! Glad to have found you. I see you're applying to UMich. That's where my MPH is from and where I'm currently working!
  21. Hey! I applied to public health PhD programs too! In behavior-type departments. A couple through SOPHAS and the rest through the actual schools. My earliest deadline was also Dec 1, I had a few due Dec. 15th, and just one due Jan. 4th-ish. I haven't heard back from any school yet. I checked the results page of this website and noticed most notifications took place in Feb and March (although there was one that notified late-Jan). Anyway, public health people are scarce but you're not alone!
  22. Hey! you should look into Health behavior and Health Education (HBHE) programs as well. They usually have community health type classes and deal with similar issues. Also, Tulane has a community health department, as does UCLA I believe. In terms of what careers you can have afterward, well, it depends on what you want to do. I have my MPH from University of Michigan in HBHE and I'm currently working in health disparities and HIV-prevention community-based research (while waiting to hear from PhD programs). I have friends working at the CDC, either doing a post-masters fellowship or working a regular job working in different divisions, I have a friend working as a public health educator for work-site wellness, a friend working as a community organizer in health-related issues, a few friends working on research projects as well but ranging in topics from veteran's health, to chronic illness management, to HIV prevention... they're really all over the place. Hope some of this helps!
  23. You could be waitlisted and hear from the school later on. My sister is a professor and on the admissions committee for a PhD program in clinical and community psych. She told me an applicant might not be contacted right away because they are 2nd or 3rd on the list for the school and may be contacted later. There's still hope!
  24. I'm going to treat myself to a trip!
  25. Sorry I wasn't more specific -- I mean UMich sociology
