The tri-council agencies look for indicators of academic and research potential, so holding a previous award technically helps in that regard. With that said, I wouldn't really say there's much causal explanation between getting MA SSHRC and getting PhD SSHRC, so much as the fact that if you *had* good indicators of research potential entering your master's to the point that you got a CGS-M, you probably also have them going into your PhD.

I think the funding is available based on committee. I.e. if i'm ranked 6 on my committee then 6 other people must reject their awards. So the waitlist is really another crap shoot, it wholly depends on how many rejections there are within the committee you're slotted into.

I also got the sense from speaking with the Program Officer that specific committees didn't seem to matter when it came to being plucked from the waitlist and offered funding.... I'm not sure what to make of this, so please correct me if you know otherwise!
I mean, is this to suggest that, from here on in, everyone is in the same boat as far as committees, and all that matters is one's waitlist score? Or do some committees have priority over others? Or do they take random turns selecting from the various committees if some funding should emerge?
And...if two people share the same score, which it appears they do on this forum (and they also appear to be in the same committee, which seems...odd) and both of them find themselves to be "next in line" for funding, what criteria does SSHRC use to pick between these 2 tied candidates?  Is another adjudicator/reader brought in to make the judgement call, or do they toss a coin?
So, yes, a sense of procedural transparency would be nice....

I think they do upgrade fellowships to CGS, as people on other threads have mentioned being bumped up from a Doctoral Fellowship to a CGS. I tried calling re: the waitlist (I'm #3 on the waitlist for committee 1b) and got the runaround: they absolutely won't comment on the likelihood of receiving funding of you're on the waitlist. They did, however, tell me I shouldn't expect to hear anything "before Fall, at the earliest."

ok, finally got the mail! after 10 business days. The envelop looked like it'd been soaked..

So, no mistake from York unfortunately. I have been waitlisted in Committee 4 with a score of 12.6.  (As a direct applicant the previous year, I got a 9.2. I have since added 1 journal article and 1 conference presentation, for a total of 2 and 2). Fingers crossed that my ranking is decent.
    Good luck fellow waitlisters!

I'm "downgrading" my CGS for a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship. Got admitted into Syracuse for the Fall.
Hope this helps someone on the waitlist for a CGS, if that's how it works.

Ugh so there's a possibility of one more weekend of no news. How terrible is this system...
    CONGRATS!!!

Edit: Sigh got my letter. Bad news for me... I'm joining the "preparing for next year" club! Congrats to all who got it this year.

Sent the acceptance email at about 4pm PST last Thursday. SSHRC sent me confirmation of receipt at about 4am (PST) the next day. It was faster than I expected.

Oh my god what a journey. Thank you folks for keeping me insane throughout the process. xx

I recommend writing single-authored manuscripts in low to low-medium quality journals. You will undoubtedly get a couple of super mean reviews (one reviewer told me my writing was incomprehensible or even worse the horrible desk reject experience ) but nothing separates you from your peers like publishing low-impact manuscripts that nobody will ever read.

Thanks so much for providing this info. And WOW, what a discrepancy between reviewers! Argh.
Out of curiosity, how long did it take SSHRC to respond to your questions?

The big brown envelope showed up in Vancouver today. 17.15/20 after 2 years of not even making it out of my department.

All the letters that were in my images for the informed delivery email did show up today and there were also medium sized envelopes. So, I wouldn't be surprised if SSHRC letters would show up in these images. Fingers crossed for tomorrow...

De-lurking to adapt an old chestnut: don't judge an envelope by its girth! I received a thin SSHRC envelope in Vancouver this afternoon with a fellowship offer — my application scored 13.7.

I received a letter today in the GTA if anyone else is still waiting. Awarded CGS officially with a score of 18.6 - doesn't say what committee though?
Thanks for forum discussions this year all! Best of luck to everyone next year. It's totally a crapshoot so don't be discouraged. I was denied CGS Master's last year, so it's a nice treat this year.
    Happy summer!

Vancouver: thin envelope arrived this afternoon.  Time for an overhaul.  (Thinking of all the learning since I applied last Fall - I'm going to put it to work!)
A warm (well, rainy) thanks to all those who shared updates on this thread... it helps to better understand how this process works. I appreciate that it often takes more than one try.
And, a hearty Congratulations to those with a thick envelope!  Well Done!!
For the other 1,183 of us: no shame.  It was a bubble of time imagining the possibilities... and I wish you all the best in what unfolds next!!   Take care.

Got a CGS. Will be turning down for Doctoral Fellowship as I am in the NJ, USA.

Score of 14.8, committee 1, 1st year PhD at US school. Was  Change of reference from last year (rejected with score of 10.8) with some minor tweaks to SOP.

    Good luck everyone!

Thought I'd bring my gradcafe account temporarily out of retirement to contribute to the wealth of SSHRC knowledge this year.
Got my results in the mail today on Vancouver Island, BC. I was waitlisted, which I had already found out from my department. I was on committee 5 (if that's where poli sci goes), and my score was 10.1/20, which, gathering from some of the other scores, is probably the lower borne of the waitlist (I think I've seen a 12.6 and a 12.9.) For those dedicated to the envelope theory, mine was a medium-sized brown envelope, which may add an interesting new level to the big envelope = SSHRC, small envelope = no SSHRC theory.
Congratulations to all those successful so far, best of luck to those on the waitlist and waiting to hear, and to those unsuccessful, I'll see you at the pity party I'm throwing at my house this Friday. I'll be providing snacks, but please bring your favourite wine and the hottest list of tracks you like to cry to.
