  1. And imagine being me....my status has not changed since 12/9/09...what did they do, lose my application?! :oO Am I the only one whose status didn't change? ACK.

  2. hehe, stupid 400 word limit on comments! I think not, on the emailing. I want to with all my being, but I don't think it would do any good and might just irritate already-overloaded folks in the department. That's my thinking on it, anyhow. Though - I surely want to!! lol I am at the point where I figure, if I'm in, I'm in, if not emailing won't help.

  3. I hope so!!!! I'd love to see you get in there! I will say, the UNC faculty is slightly older, especially the medieval cohort, so it's possible they would like older candidates to work with because younger ones can get awfully annoying....! lol Keeping my fingers crossed for you!!

  4. And also - I can't even spell "always", as evidenced in my post above. lmao.
  5. Well, I did the positives thread, but it's walways good to look at it from another perspective, right? Here's why I am a crappy applicant: My undergraduate GPA was a 2.66 and my major was French. I withdrew two classes and a thesis from finishing my first master's degree, then waited six years to do a second attempt at it, which resulted in my losing all of those original credits and having to take even longer to finish, so clearly from an economic standpoint I'm not very bright, and have the student loan debt to prove it. I have taught middle and high school English for the past decade. GRE scores? PATHETIC. 620V, 450Q, and a 6 on the AW. And I didn't take the subject test. I've published and presented at conferences, but "everybody says" you shouldn't do that until later in your program when you have something important to say. Loser.
  6. That's just silly....if it meant "entry not offered" then why on earth would it then be passed on to the department? That would be a complete waste of time. PLEASE. Ignore that idea entirely. If you right click on the "eno" it gives you the option to define "enough" and if you cut and past into a word document it says a whole phrase - "complete enough for review". They've just gotten through the GSAS bureaucracy and are at the departments for consideration. Relax, and remember - they got thousands of applications. It takes a while to follow the paper trail and make sure all of the ducks are in a row. add crappy weather and delays, and you get a slightly later decision. For my part, I'm just going to focus on my work and have a glass of wine.
  7. Catholic is in Washington, D.C., and is a member of the consortium, so essentially via admit there, I've gotten in at George Mason, George Washington, American, U of Maryland, Gallaudet, and whatever the other one up there is - can take classes at all/any to count towards my degree if I end up there. Logistics may be a problem, so still hoping for UNC or UVA...but thrilled, nonetheless. :o)

  8. I haven't heard about funding yet; I think they require the FAFSA first, so I have to file. It feels good and is a relief to have an admit under my belt. CUA was a reach school for me logistically, so we're hoping still for UNC or UVA, which would not require moving and/or commuting...but this year, in this climate, I'm not taking this admit for granted at ALL!!

  9. Columbia applicants - check your status form. Apparently the majority of applications left the graduate school offices and hit the departments sometime yesterday...looks like we'll hear back in about a week or two. GOOD LUCK!!!
  10. Yes, I'm in at CUA. No word on funding, and there are a looooot of conversations between DH and me that would have to happen for me to accept, but at the very least I can calm down and focus knowing I did get an admit somewhere. And for you - hey, we're practically the same age, so clearly age is not an issue - hang in there!!!!!

  11. How weird, you were accepted via email, and I, by post! lol
  12. Minnares - I emailed my prof in a blind panic the other day, and she told me basically the same thing - "February is early for English, don't expect to hear anything until next week or the week after, and don't start fretting until the end of March, if then". Penn State, for example, isn't expecting to get through it all until close to the end of March, according to someone on the board.
  13. I applied to five schools. None of them has responded yet, and the status of my application has not been changed anywhere, either. GAH!! The waiting sucks. I am both overeating AND overexercising! lmao. I guess they cancel eachother out as meaningless ways to pass the time. Should probably be grading papers instead but really having trouble getting up the motivation to evaluate the work of others when I, myself, want so badly to have my work evaluated!! SIGH. Maybe I'll hear something next week...?
  14. Wow! What author(s)/ text(s) does that comprise, or at least in your work? Do you include authors born in the South and writing elsewhere, e.g. Donna Tartt and Rebecca Wells, or do you focus on writers who stay in the South?
  15. Agree, agree, agree...revise the paper and send it back out. Look at the drivel that is published sometimes....you will find a place for it somewhere. Don't give up! For my part, this is the looooooooooooongest weeeeeeeeeeeek eeeeeeeeeeeeever....how can it be Wednesday, the last week of February, and I have not heard ANYTHING from ANY of my schools??? SIGH.
  16. Congratulations! You're the first English accept on the board for them this year, as far as I can tell! Would you mind sharing your field?
  17. lol it cut me off - was going to write I'm delighted you got an accept! :o)

  18. I know...I once posted facetiously that they must determine accepts based on your Zodiac sign's compatibility with that of your potential advisors, or perhaps based on whether or not you used the term "ice cream" in your SOP....I'm starting to wonder if I mightn't have been right after all, because really, this makes no sense to me! lol I'm hopeful, though, and I...

  19. What an awful thing to say. While it's true adjuncts cannot serve as graduate advisors, it is not true that they aren't important. Even if they are not full time faculty, they are still professors, and therefore deserving of respect from their students as such. Furthermore, adjuncts often 'work twice as hard for half the pay', as it were; I know some who teach as many as seven courses per semester, sometimes at multiple campuses, for a stipend for each class (about $2500.00) and no benefits. They are definitely people, and certainly merit respect!
  20. I'm sorry....I hope you get in somewhere, and hang in there!!
  21. I advocate for asking what you could do to be a better candidate, in the event you got no acceptances - otherwise, how will you know? The worst they will do is just not reply or tell you due to time constraints they can't respond. If you plan on going into academia whether or not you get into the other programs, it would be a good idea to send a note. Academia is a small world, and it doesn't hurt to be civil and maintain civil contact with others who could potentially be your colleagues someday. Just because you aren't going into their department doesn't mean you won't someday see them on a conference panel, have them editing your paper for publication, acting as outside readers for your dissertation...it pays to be circumspect about that. You never know when you'll need to be on good terms with academics you aren't studying with...
  22. Congratulations - saw your status update- you've heard good news, then? :o)

  23. Fellow English medievalists....I just looked at the current graduate student list on UNC's site, and encouragingly, while there are four professors teaching in the medieval field as well as their other specialties, there are only 6 students specifically working in medieval at present, with only three of those working specifically in medieval alone - most current students appear to be concentrating in the 19th and 20th centuries. There may still be hope....!
  24. For my writing samples, I gave them the first chapter of my thesis (25 pages) with the relevant works cited, and then my most recent conference paper, which was written post-degree. I figured my thesis represents the best work I did during my MA program, and the conference paper is indicative of the scholarship I am capable of doing on my own as an independent researcher - so those were my best choices, demonstrating both what I can accomplish with an editor and what I can accomplish on my own, and also a wide variety of lengths (25 pages of a 100 page document, and a 10 page paper complete in itself). you might consider just giving them a chapter of your thesis. They're looking for proof you can write scholarly prose that is of high quality both stylistically and in terms of argumentation, as well as in terms of research. A chapter of a longer work you have done should suffice. Nowhere does it say "self-contained piece of writing" - I assumed most people who had done a Master's thesis would submit a chapter or two, because if I were looking at someone with an MA in hand, I would expect to see a part of his or her thesis as a writing sample - after all, it's supposed to be your best work, and shouldn't you be submitting your best work?
