  1. Thanks! That never crossed my mind. Looks like we will to our inspections at El Paso. Also, Arizona has a hefty vehicle tax you have to pay every year when you register your vehicles hence why we are doing wverything we can to not register them. They take 1/2 of 60% of the vehicle's MSRP and divide it by 100. Then they multiply that by $3 and that is your tax on top of registration. Every year it drops 15%, but we do not plan on staying here too long. Its HOT!
  2. I moved from Texas to Arizona. My husband had to get an AZ license (for work), but I am keeping my Texas one. The DMV in AZ said since we are only here for my studies (2 years), we do not have to register our vehicles. The only thing I had to do was change my address on my license to my parents' house since we sold our house. We still have not figured out how we will do the state inspections on both the cars. 17 hours is a long drive for an inspection . How has anyone else handled this? Also, you can take the title to court and have your name on it. This goes under gift/donation. Similar to a sale, but there is no taxes or anything involved.
  3. Anyone here familiar with Python that could possibly help me. I am a new 2.7 user and I have been teaching myself!
  4. I also will be attending ASU in the Fall working toward a masters! I am already here working as a research assistant :). Let me know if you have any questions about the area. I have only been here a little over a month, but it is HOT!
  5. You got this! Its been a few years before I finished my last 2 years at the 4 year college and now I am pumped more than ever. My previous uni never offered these planetary geology courses so I am super excited. My family also does not give a crap about me being my school or they think I speak another language when I mention it! Only my husband, but hey that is what matters!
  6. I bought the HP spectra 360 and love it!! I downloaded all the software I will be using and started getting some folders organized. I also have an HP printer that I have had for years but still works great. I have one of those hard cover books with a table of contents for a lab journal to get my data organized. For note taking, I like pen and paper. Then I rewrite my notes in another hardcover journal. I have been doing this my entire undergrad and its good to refer back to. Of course, lots of sticky notes, pens, pencils, and highlighters. A good planner is a must. Mine is layed out in time slots versus just a blank slate for each day to help me stay more organized.
  7. I am taking 9 hours my first semester as a grad :). Aside from research credits, seminars, etc., I am taking two classes. One in planetary geology and the other in cosmochemistry and meteorites. Just by typing that up I got super excited
  8. I've started working over a month at my new university on a few projects. These projects are more on the astrophysics side (I have a background in geology), so learning Python has been fun. I've also started prepping everything to begin my experiments for my thesis when the fall semester starts. It was overwhelming to skip the summer break and move immediately after my acceptance, but I am starting to see it was a good move.
  9. Anyone else started working at their university already? Immediately after my acceptance, I had to move to begin work as a research assistant over the summer. I have been working a littlw over a month now. Barely had any time to settle in or even think about what it will be like to be a grad.
  10. Yes, ASU only admits students if they can be funded.
  11. Stephen F Austin State University in in Nacadoches, TX does not require a GRE. You do not even need to submit scores. ASU requires scores to be submitted but there is no minimum score required. I had embarassing GRE scores but still got into ASU's SESE. The biggest factor was getting in contact with an adviser that you are interested in working with. A strong interest and a love for your field is what ASU is looking for.
  12. I purchased my first home with my husband during my last two years as an undergrad. Some days I wish I was back in an apartment due to the time I had for upkeep. As I relocate for grad school, I sold my home and will be moving out next month. The selling process and buying process are both time consuming. For my masters, I am going back to an apartment, but will consider purchasing for when I begin my PhD. If you are considering buying to live for two years as a masters, it is not worth it. I was fortunate to build some equity during a short time. Remember, when you buy, you are paying interest the first year (sometimes 2), and your principle remains the same unless you pay extra on your mortgage. I was fortunate to build some equity and my house appraised at a much higher price as compared to other homes in the neighborhood. I will not make this mistake again as most agents we spoke to prior to selling said we will most likely owe when we sell our home since we only had it for 2 years and suggested a much lower selling price than we anticipated. Of course, we went with our gut, sold it for a price so we can make a good profit.
  13. I am traveling 2k miles with two dogs, a huge goldfish, and a husband. I am not comfortable taking my dogs, fish, or husband on a plane haha. We are traveling with everyone in our two vehicles. As a former vet tech, there are "railroads" across the country in which vet techs and other animal lovers volunteer their time to get pets safely to their new home. This could be another option for you but it can take longer.
  14. I could not sleep the days up until my phone call and now I cannot sleep because I got accepted hahaha. The professor called me and discussed a project. I said yes! Looks like you are on the same path as me. I really hope you get good news. I was worried about my call but my husband said if they take the time to call you, then it will be good news
  15. Is the professor you have a phone called scheduled for is with ASU? If so, that is what happened to me. I got a phone called scheduled and they let me know the good news hoping you get the same as it would be nice to know a new fellow grad in the program!
