  1. I had an interview and it seems like others are also reporting interviews on the survey. Each track does their own evaluations and rankings (which are suppose to finish up next week) before things are sent to the full committee. Based on historical data points on the survey you probably shouldn't expect any word until mid-Feb. If you haven't heard about an interview just know that others have heard in late January and early Feb. in the past.
  2. The faculty just got their lists this week. The people at the top of their list will be invited over the next two week. I think everything has to be done by the end of the month so that the committee can get decisions out mid-feb.
  3. Looks like I posted a few hours early. Heard back from the clinical epidemiology track about an interview
  4. For those getting interviews at JHU - anyone hear from a track besides the Aging datapoint already on the survey?
  5. Hi @linnbear - as others have said don't give up just yet. UNC seems to cycle their application through your listed POIs, so it's possible that it's just taking longer because of someone you listed being busy. Don't forget that there's also the waitlist! Historically there have been some late acceptances in March. Otherwise, hope people put in data points so that you can asses your application and try to address limitations in case you opt for another attempt.
  6. Sorry to all those that got email rejections from Emory today. As @ianmleavitt said, not everyone will check and update gradcafe, but for those of us that do it would be helpful if people start adding data points to the survey! Adding those rejections really stung last time I applied - but they were really useful references. I was more of less "ghosted" by a program last time - I found out I was really on the wait list but low enough that they didn't want to tell me an give me hope since there was such a low probability enough people would reject offers to pull me of the list. Anyway - good luck this week everyone!
  7. For anyone applying to UNC - are interviews optional and are people planning on doing one? I'm guessing it helps to do an interview if you can find a way down to Chapel Hill?
  8. The reputation of the University as a whole tends to shape people's opinions of any program/degree at that uni. That's the hard thing with doctoral degrees - the training you get isn't necessarily dependent on the school as a whole but your department (to some extent) and your mentor/advisor (most of it). I had a few schools on my list that got the same response that you got. When I tried to explain that I was going for a specific faculty member or research center/group that made some sense, but the stigma lingered.
  9. Great data point. Thanks. I did end up reaching out to JHU and SOPHAS and I think I'm in the clear. I also stumbled onto the JHU Admissions Blog (https://www.jhsph.edu/admissions/admissions-blog/what-you-ve-been-asking-sophas-verification#comments) and it seems like they'll review the application even if verification takes longer than the supporting materials deadline. That's a big weight off my shoulders. Anyway good luck everyone!
  10. My SOPHAS application for JHU is still not verified. Last cycle I applied it took 5 business days. Now I'm worried it won't be done by their supporting material deadline of Dec. 19th. Definitely my fault for not getting transcripts submitted earlier, but now I feel powerless. Anyone have experience with talking to the admissions office in cases where supporting material didn't make it by the deadline? Would they really throw out my application if SOPHAS ends up getting it to them a few days late?
  11. Good luck! I’m trying to decide if there are any more schools I can apply to for the 14/15th deadline.
  12. I got the same sense last time I applied. I knew of when the application committee at my school met, so I can say that they waited until after the deadline to have any serious conversations. Take your time and make sure you've read through everything carefully.
  13. I was wait-listed at a school during the 2016 cycle. Unfortunately, I was a couple spots away from the top and they only let one or two people off the wait-list last year. Here are some of the things that I learned from the last time around. 1. If you say you want to be in academia then published, peer-reviewed manuscripts are clear signals to admission committees. I had years of experience of wet-lab research, but no published manuscripts. Really great LORs, some conference abstracts, and two theses, but the lack of a paper really hurt me. The hard thing for me was that I actually did get a paper accepted for publication after the application deadline. The timing was unfortunate, however, since schools had already made a decisions about interviews. I reached out and let schools, but it didn't result in any extra interviews. When I did go on interviews and mentioned the paper they got excited. 2. Know who has money. Get on NIH Reporter and find out who potentially has money for students. Even if you're in a program with fully funding - you should find out where the money comes from. Is it a T32 grant? Is it based on you working 20 hours a week as a TA or researcher? I went on interviews and mentioned all these junior faculty members that I might want to work with - sadly, none of them had the funding they needed to support a student. I thought it was overreaching for me to contact a full professor, but they're the ones with money. Plus, they mentor junior faculty, so the best route might be to find a junior faculty member that you want to work with, contact them early, learn who their mentor is on the faculty, and then talk to their mentor as well. 3. Really think about location and life logistics. A PhD is a long process, and programs want to know that you'll be able to make it. You should be able to articulate why that specific academic program is good for you, but you might also want to talk about why the city or wider context could work. Do you have family, friends, or some social support network that could help you? Do you actually want to live in X-city across the country or did you just apply because they were ranked highly?
  14. Hi all - I last applied during the 2016 cycle before I had any work experience. Hopefully things work out better this time around Undergrad Institution: Liberal Arts College Major(s): Chemistry Overall GPA: 3.4 Type of Student: US citizen, Asian, Male Graduate Institution: Top 5 SPH Major(s): Global Health Concentration(s): Overall GPA: 3.8 GRE Scores Q: 164 (87%) V: 163 (93%) W: 4.5 (82%) Research Experience: 4 years in undergrad, multiple projects during masters, and now a 1+ years at a researcher at my graduate university Pertinent Activities or Jobs: 1 first-authored published manuscript, 3 co-author published manuscripts, 8+ manuscripts under review Special Bonus Points: Much better LORs this time around Applying to Where: Epidemiology PhD programs at UNC, Hopkins, Harvard, Columbia
  15. I'm getting antsy waiting on a couple schools. At least two of my programs should have notified students by now according to gradcafe data, but appears that no one has heard back yet. Has anyone tried reaching out to programs on your application status and found them to be responsive in the past? I might wait another week before reaching out, but I'd like to start looking for other opportunities if this aren't going to work out for a fall start.
  16. Out of curiosity - do all schools have a common date for students to accept or decline? I've heard of the occasional program (like BU) that gives you a set time (e.g. two weeks) to accept their offer, but I'm more interested in schools that don't pressure you into a quick decision.
  17. Anyone else waiting to hear from Hopkins International Health GDEC track? I have a feeling they already gave out their 4 spots allocated spots already based on the self-reports on GradCafe. I hope they still have a spot or two open among the shared spots between the other tracks. Either way I hope they don't make leave us in suspense for too much longer. For those that are getting positive news - congratulations!
  18. Yeah - I also got my rejection today from PHS. Not surprised since I all the admits to the epidemiology track heard back already. Has anyone been following up with Michigan epidemiology?
  19. It varies highly between schools. Some programs are fully funded with stipend - like the Global Health PhD at Washington or the Epidemiology PhD at Michigan. Other programs might only cover a percentage of tuition - like International Health at Hopkins (100% tuition first year; 50% tuition every other year). Funding should be explained in your acceptance letter or in a letter shortly following that notification.
  20. Congrats to those who got into Hopkins Epidemiology and International Health! Someone posted about getting a decision from International Health at Hopkins - could you specify which track? I know each track get a set allocations, but I thought they would all announce at the same time.
  21. Those stats and experiences look good. If you're applying to PhD programs the main questions are - what kind of questions are you hoping to answer? What kind of methods would you employ? Do you have specific diseases/pathogens or populations of interest? If you can answer those questions and can find a faculty member that would be interested in your answers then you'll be set.
  22. Well congrats! I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed until next week
  23. Sometimes I wonder if school's overlap on purpose. When I was applying for my masters I had to choose which schools to visit.I ended up going to the Hopkins day and canceling my plans to visit others. I was lucky enough to know a few current students and talking with them helped me get a sense of culture at the schools I didn't visit.
  24. Are the results post about interviews at Harvard just for DrPH applicants? There was a post or two that said PhD instead of DrPH, but I'm assuming that was a typo. On an unrelated note - does Yale EMD plan on doing interviews? Congrats to all the people who have heard back about interviews/acceptances!
