Cat_Robutt got a reaction from pcato1 in Do grad students from out of state change residency and car insurance?
I think part of this depends on where you are moving to––for example, establishing residency is more expensive in California than in New Mexico or Pennsylvania, as are getting car tags renewed. Some food for thought in this particular year, however: where you are a resident is where you vote. Mail-ins and early voting are fine, but you may want to consider brushing up on who is running for which seats in the place you will be spending the next several years. Local politics may influence changes in your community much more so than national elections.

Y'all....I don't know if you heard about what happened in Orlando, Florida, this weekend. I still don't know if all of my friends who live there are safe  It's been a really, really rough two weeks for me. Even if things were going perfectly with my in-laws, between the Stanford case, Trump winning the nom, and the Pulse murders, I just feel exhausted and scared of the struggle of being someone like me. Why do people want to kill us?

You need a really good eye makeup primer.  You apply it, keep your eyes closed for a few minutes while it sets, and then apply your eye makeup.  Always use waterproof products whenever possible.  There are also eye makeup setting solutions, but I've never needed these when using waterproof products.
I see people wearing other schools sweatshirts at universities all the time.  I don't think its a huge deal unless there's a big sports game or there's a clear rival university.  I prefer to leave them for the gym or working in a not so clean environment.

@Effloresce If you like wearing femme clothing, the website eShakti designs custom-fit clothing and it isn't really that expensive considering they pay their workers well and tailor your clothes for you. Also, they seem to always have sales!
And yes...catcalling and its opposite of public shaming are both horrid.

see, i've not gone thrifting much..i think it's because i'm really impatient when it comes to shopping and super unwavering in terms of what things i like to wear. also doesn't help that i'm chubby and busty and hate trying clothes on.
but yeah, not to go on a rant but ugh...i hate how much body-shaming and sexualization of people's bodies is deemed as acceptable in our society. i saw a graphic the other day on an fb page i follow saying something along the lines of "it's getting hotter and people can dress the way they want to feel cool, and you aren't allowed to sexualize or shame them for it" and the amount of shamey comments were revolting!
also catcalling makes me so uncomfortable. also men just expressing interest and not taking 'no' for an answer even after i tell them i'm gay. it's so frustrating.

See I feel lucky because I've never had anyone cat call me or they left me alone after I said no thanks. But it also makes me feel sad because this shouldn't even be happening in the first place! I never thrift shopped for clothes before, they weren't around where I grew up. I usually just hit a mall when sales become available.

Thanks! I have really sensitive eyes, so I can't wear much eye makeup. I'm super jealous of people who can!

Hahahaha! Okay I laughed out loud at this.
And thanks for the encouragement @janetjanejune. I removed the post that I made (mom was diagnosed with cancer) since posting that stuf fon an anonymous Internet forum is a bit weird.

Also, @Effloresce try using Mint! It's an app that I use that tracks your expenses and also is used to make budgets. That's about the extent of my budgeting skills though  Sjoh posted some great tips a few pages back though.

@Cat_Robutt I dressed up as a Stormtrooper using a crop top and leggings I got from Poprageous. Next year my plan is to go as Captain Phasma as I am rather obsessed with her. It is quite common for people to dress up during the Disney races according to the theme of the race. They have a Star Wars race at Disneyland already, but it is Light Side. This Disney World one was Dark Side, which was fun. Costuming is a way of life for me...whether normally or in a race. I'm a member of the 501st Legion, which is a Star Wars costuming club (Dark Side only) and I have Stormtrooper armor for it.

One of these days I will live in a warm climate for a decent amount of time. I'm fed up of grey and such a narrow temperature range year round (30-70 without fail with the odd outlier). I agree with humidity. When you have a shower, step outside then realise you need another shower again. It's yuck.
My housemate has been away for 2 days and it's amazing. If this is what life's going to be like come August I will be laughing.

@hippyscientist Thanks! I got mine from the web shop at getbullish.com—I was internet browsing at 3 in the morning—but it seems like the brand is available on a bunch of websites, including Amazon, if you google "screwing up is part of the program socks".  I'm saving wearing them until my classes actually start, but I'm looking forward to them!

Turns out 2 other people in my lab also have the exact same bag. I use it for everything, including travel.
Maybe also consider the original LL Bean backpack. Similar style to the first bag you linked to, but they're super high quality and have a lifetime warranty (which they'll honor with no questions asked, even if it wears out). http://m.llbean.com/product.html?bc=null-816&skCatId=62856#62856 (Also comes in printed variety.)

As much as I love the blue one, I'd probably go for the last one because lots of space. I'm one of these people who lives out their bag and will carry my laptop, gym clothes (& shower stuff), lunch etc in one bag. It depends what you will use it for. If it's a carting around everything bag, the Explorer has my vote.
@Cat_Robutt Arrow is epic. Unfortunately I've been limited to the seasons on Netflix in the UK so I've only seen the first 2 or 3. I love cheesy bad telly with the occasional good show thrown in. Jane the Virgin is lined up to be watched, I'm just not sure I want to board the feels train just yet!

@Neist You have the composure of an etiquette king! Teach us your ways.
Gilmore Girls is a great show. Watched it sporadically while channel surfing. I'll have to watch all the seasons to understand the revival. In related news, since I'm moving to Oregon, I figured Portlandia was required viewing. Each episode I wonder why I'm watching this then I click on the next one. It's so bad but it's so good.

Bwahahaha I still remember eating these as a tiny southerner and my out-of-town aunt asking me what they were, followed by silence, then crunching.
This is amazing!!! If you ever thought about selling these/taking commissions, I would totally buy one from you.
    YAY!!!!! That's fantastic news!

Yeah I've done it before, but thanks for the heads up  Cheapest and easiest to fly into Newark and drive out the next day. That's always been the plan, just waiting on my dad to get around to booking flights (he's got to make sure it works with work). Accommodation is all booked! I don't need to be homeless for a week thank you airbnb!
Man I can't wait to binge Gilmore Girls again. Such a good show.

@Neist I do wish that I could have your, as Cat said, poise and purpose. Had I gotten an e-mail saying that it was a mistake, I would've been incredibly passive aggressive about it and complained to anyone who would listen. You are the person that I strive to be.
Also, this is a weird question... but has anyone considered joining the Peace Corps after getting their PhD?

True... There are many paths in life, and many will not reach any form of poise or self control.
All someone has to do is make popcorn and I lose all self control.

@Pink Fuzzy Bunny Vacuuming up spiders..... nope nope nope I'm so sorry and that just sounds....terrifying. I really want to make a daddy long legs pun in relation to the move, but nothing is coming to mind (thankfully).
@sjoh197 @Neist and @hippyscientist Thanks all for your sympathies! Venting a bit on here makes me know I'm not crazy. And I've got my pard and our cat and a safe little hiding space, so I think things will work. Here for one month, and then with my family for one month, and then on to State College. This is the weirdest summer!
@Neist Congrats!!!! How exciting! Do you know the kind of work you will be doing? And @MarineBluePsy will you have funding, like an RA deal, instead?
@hippyscientist I'm excited that you're excited! How are you feeling today?
    It's almost June! It's almost watermelon/boating/swimming/grilling weather!
