Not Enough CourseWork credit
TwirlingBlades replied to Ryan4's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
Did they give you an email for this professor? You can usually google a professor's name + school and the email will come up. For example: "Dr John Smith University of Grad Cafe email" Edit: I'm not sure who "they" is referring to in your second paragraph. Did you talk to someone who told you the professor's name? Or are you talking about the program in general? Either way, try to find their email. -
Not Enough CourseWork credit
TwirlingBlades replied to Ryan4's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
If it's a 46 hour two-year program, then I would assume full time would be 9 (fall) + 9 (spring) + 6 (summer). I would assume summer is *required* or else it would take 2.5 years to graduate at 18 hours per year. I keep asking about the length of the program because you are either supposed to only have 1 semester left (2 year program), or 3 semesters (3 year program), *not* counting summers. Those are 2 very different situations. My MS program was 36 hours (recently switched to 30 so people could graduate in 3 semesters, which many non-thesis students did). 9 hours per semester for 4 semesters= 2 years. Summers weren't required unless you have a TA/RA through the department, and even then I think summers only required 3 hours. So that is what I'm using as reference and trying to put together your requirements based on the info you have given. I believe I saw in another post that you didn't want to go into research. What are other exit exam options? Do you have to do a thesis? My program had 4 exam options. I second all of MarineBluePsy's advice. The first priority is to track down someone who can give you the department head's name, and ideally give you info on your program requirements as well. Find the dean of school that biology is in (for example, biology fell under the "college of arts and science" at my school). They will know. Did you go to the same school for undergrad, and if so, were you a bio major? If so, you should know who the bio department head is, or the very least, the dean of the college bio is under. Do you have friends in the program you can ask? That also might be a good place to start. -
Not Enough CourseWork credit

Also, how long is this program? 3 years? Are you a supposed to be a full-time student (you wouldn't be with just one class)? How many hours is a full-time student at your university? I'm confused as to how you have been there 3 semesters with 22 hours left, when many MS programs are 30-36 hours total (which is why I ask if you are a part-time student). -

Did you get a Graduate Student Handbook for your department/program? It might've been paperback or digital (we all got a PDF emailed to us which we looked over during orientation). That should lay out the requirements (hours, exit exams, etc) and classes. It also might be available on your departments website. I am also concerned that basic information isn't available. If you feel comfortable, feel free to PM me your school's name and I can try to help find information. This might not be the same for every school/program, but we had to pick a concentration when we applied. Was it the same for you? If not, when were you supposed to decide? -
Agreed. I finished my masters in May, and while I am in a different field, these feelings are universal. My committee and I were happy with my final thesis, however I do have things I wish I had done differently, many of which stemmed from the short timeline. I also wish I had more participants, however I had a very respectable amount for the single competition season I was looking at (I am in exercise sciences/kinesiology). Talk to your advisor and remember to breathe!
-
Why the change in deadline? Masters defenses are usually in April for a May graduation (unless I have your timeline wrong). Or is this a committee decision?
-
Agreed. I'm a packers fan and have been scorned too many times.

I googled "GRE advice" back in 2015 and I found some threads on here!

Note taking during class
TwirlingBlades replied to soontobeslp2018's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I've always typed notes, even in UG, but that's just because I type much faster than I write. Some of my profs go so fast (especially in masters) that I almost can't keep up typing! I rewrite a lot of my notes to study (and flashcards) which helps with memory, for me. Edit: I also type notes into my powerpoint. I also always carry my laptop's powercord around, because don't like being caught with low battery. -
It's 11:02pm on April 14th and I've been completely ghosted by 2 schools Also I'm stressed beyond belief.

Grad students, have you ever withdrawn during your undergraduate career?
TwirlingBlades replied to UWjcw's topic in The Lobby
I withdrew from a class first semester of my freshman year. Utterly horrible professor, made me cry multiple times, would've tanked my GPA (in the first semester, which is hard to recover from). I retook it later and did well. I also changed my major after that first semester, so that helped as well! No one has ever said anything about it. -
https://offcampushousing.miamioh.edu/ This has a pretty holistic list of places to live. I recommend The Commons (I lived there 2 years; a bit far from campus but right next to kroger; different floor plans options; right near bus stop), Oxford West apartments (near The Commons; near bus stop), Hawks Landing (also a bit far, but nice), Chestnut Place is right next to campus (undergrads, but many of my friends lived there and liked it; building more apartments, not sure if they are opening for 2018-2019), Campus Commons is a good choice also (very cute and close to campus; undergrads, but hasn't been too rowdy, but that varies year to year.) Depends on what you are looking for! I would stay away from Courtyards of Miami, small spaces and filled with loud UGs (my friend has lived there for two years, but definitely loud). Level 27 is way off campus, need a car for that. Level 27 has its own shuttle system but the hours are inconvenient. I would also stay away from uptown apartments. Ideal location, but LOUD. Most places you would need a roommate... I know the The Commons (where I lived) can help match you. I found my roommate last year (after my previous roommate graduated) through them. Other places might as well! The Commons: https://www.oxfordcommons.com/ (recently got new management, rebranded from Oxford Commons and Miami Commons to "the commons" so you might hear it referred as Oxford Commons or Miami Commons by others. Oxford and Miami commons were under the same management, but named differently because they were built at two different times, so that was confusing. Now under one name, yay!) Oxford West: http://www.oxfordwestapartments.com/ Chestnut Place: https://www.chestnutplacemiami.com/ South Campus Corner: http://southcampusquarter.com/ (rental business that owns many locations-> looks like they have a "roommate needed list" on the bottom of the front page) There are a bunch more so if you find other options, I can also give you the low-down on those! Also, there is an Off-Campus Outreach office: http://miamioh.edu/student-life/off-campus-outreach/. Also, it couldn't hurt to ask the English department if they have any recommendations, either for rooming or for living.

For my program, people reached out to our grad department and they sent out a listserv email (example "so and so is an incoming graduate student in the dietetics program and is looking for a roommate. Here is her email") etc, etc. I also know that many people connected with current students and looked at housing during tours, which, for my department, is happening right now for incoming first-years. My department (kinesiology) is kind of unique because a good portion of people did their undergrad at Miami as well. Of course, this could be completely different for other departments! What are you studying? I would be happy to give apartment recommendations as well. Have you been to the campus?
-
I didn't get a car until my senior year, and that was mostly because I had an internship outside of Oxford (also I live in Virginia, and driving home was a lot easier than flying). We have great bus systems, and the area is geographically very small and walkable! Also, parking is very tight and not worth the hassle if you do not have a pass (we have parking garages that everyone can use, but they cost money).
-
Hey everyone! I did my undergrad and masters (graduating with masters in May!) at Miami. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer! 2014-2015 was my sophomore year! That was such a horrible winter, and I lived on western, so it was extra horrible. I also had a broken foot, so I was sliding around in an aircast, lol.

Had a great phone call with POI!!

Update: They cleared the charges!! I had enough photo and email proof of what happened (and the real estate investment place KNEW how bad the old management was) that I successfully pleaded my case. Plus the new manager was amazingly helpful and sympathetic (since she's been cleaning up similar messes left from old management). YAY!
-
Oh I see. Yeah they are claiming I owe them a month of rent, which I don't. Oh, duh. I know what that is lol, it just didn't connect in my brain! Yeah, I think people have to be careful with that stuff.
-
Their real estate investment agency sent the letter so I can't just ignore the fact I owe almost $900. have proof of what happened, so I'm hoping it works out. I'm in contact with a bunch of people trying to figure it out. And management completely changed over the summer, so everyone who used to be there and knows what happened isn't there anymore. What is crypto stuff?
-
The apartments I lived in off campus last year claims I owe them $800+ dollars for last July, even though they kicked me out in June because I was moving into a new place mid-July and they wanted the space for summer renters. I went in three times (once with my mom) to ensure that my account was closed and I was free to go. Which I was, and my card was taken off the online payment system, which is why it's been sitting there for months. I lived there two years and they had an awful payment system and I dealt with them multiple times a year. I moved out 7 months ago and I still can't get away. I'm about to give them an earful on Monday.

Yay! I have 2 of 4 applications done. The other 2 are Feb deadlines. I'm planning on turning them in early though.
-
Professor turned in my last recommendation for a Jan 15 deadline. Relieved, since he is known for his forgetfulness (I had to remind him about my Dec 1st application).
-
Same here. I turn 23 two weeks before graduation for MSc (birthday is end of April, graduation mid-May). I'm the second youngest in my cohort (the youngest and I both graduated a year early with Bachelor). It's really intimidating.

It's 4:37am and I have to be up in 45 minutes for a cross-country flight. I hate that my dad schedules all flights for like 8am. Oh well, no sleep for me!
