Waiting as a Comp Lit person
steve3020 replied to Straparlare's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Sorry about that! I haven't got anything from NYU yet but got my CUNY rejection today. Hope NYU don't reject me today -
Waitlist Movement
steve3020 replied to Scarlet A+'s topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Yeh, I'm in the same situation with one waitlist. But I think this may not be necessarily a bad thing, because they also make a small number of offers to international students. I was wondering more of a scenario where they choose Americans on the waitlist first over intls. -
Waitlist Movement
steve3020 replied to Scarlet A+'s topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I don't know about Riverside so don't take my word for it, but I emailed an institution that, on the board, people said they got a response from after contacting them, and I got mine too. But it sounds like they are flooded with emails and that's probably why they didn't reply to yours, so probably it's not the best idea to email them again. Good luck! -
Waitlist Movement

Are international candidates treated differently when they are waitlisted? Now that I'm on the waitlist for two places and possibly three (they said I 'maybe' on the waitlist, which is confusing), I'm wondering if my chances of getting in are lower because I'm not American? -
Do Americans need a visa to study in Canada?
steve3020 replied to steve3020's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
Hi, Takeruk. Thanks for the explanation. Yes, I understand that I'm on the international student waitlist (I'm a non-American intl student). I was wondering if Americans also count as international students. I was just trying to gauge my chance of getting accepted since I was told that the waitlist is quite short. Thanks! -
Hey all, I was told by a Canadian university that I was on a visa student waitlist. Since there's is an American applicant who was waitlisted on the board, I'd like to know if they also count as visa students in Canada. I heard that Americans only need a permit and not a visa? Is that right? Thanks.

Waiting as a Comp Lit person
steve3020 replied to Straparlare's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Yeh, it's quite late but I still think it's possible. My logic is, I got waitlisted last year, so at least they'll waitlist me again or accept me haha. Yes, I applied there too, I will let you know if I hear anything back. -

Hey Ister, you are the man! The DGS at NYU changed this year so I am thinking perhaps that's why they are notifying so late. It seems strange that there's no rejection on the board for CUNY but anyway that gives me some hope. Thanks!! -

Haha I said that mainly to be on @Yanaka's side in her ordeal, because people can have trouble with these things even when the university is trying their best. Don't take what I said too seriously. I have no pretence to representing the truth of all universities. -
The Language Requirement
steve3020 replied to Hartley's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Ah I remember now. I think I saw that requirement two years ago when I was first applying and got put off by it. Anyway in my research area I don't think a mediaeval language would be necessary although it may help, who knows. BTW were you waitlisted by Cornell too? I saw another post on the board so I'm wondering who... (forgot to congrats you for getting into Yale!) -

I'm sorry to hear that! Universities are always very slow and uncoordinated with administrative things. They need to be nagged to finally get to work. I really don't understand why it takes 8 weeks to print a copy of my transcript... -
The Language Requirement
steve3020 replied to Hartley's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Which programme is this? Usually they (comp.lit) ask for reading proficiency in two other than English, don't they? (Although that's the minimum and I'm sure many, especially international students, come with more preparation than that.) -
Reactions to PhD Study
steve3020 replied to orphic_mel528's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
In my case..my dad has a Phd. He gave a shot at academia without much success. So he's been quite supportive. I think he wants to live vicariously through me a bit. Well it's more pressure on me. -

Anyone has any info on when NYU will notify? In the past years they were much quicker. -

Got waitlisted at Cornell today! I got rejected from there last year on this very same day (!) so I'm very grateful although it's not an acceptance. -
Hi everyone. I am still waiting to hear back from 5 more schools in Comp.lit but waiting with no acceptance is quite stressful, especially because this is my second shot. Anyhow I am trying to pull myself together and prepare for the not unlikely scenario of getting rejected from everywhere again. I got pretty sick of this madness and I don't know if I will apply again to American schools next year in that case. But thanks to a good fellow GCer, I realised that there are a number of Master's courses taught in English in German universities, and also they give some stipend for Master's students too. If there's anyone who has some experience or knowledge of the scholarship from DAAD - I think it's called Scholarship for graduates in all disciplines - can you share some info about it, in particular if the competition is as stiff as getting into a funded phd programme in America? Also, if I apply to programmes taught in English, is my application treated differently than those who apply to ones in German? I'm just really sick of counting on a little piece of luck for getting in and the untransparency of the whole process, and coming to believe more and more that this doesn't make any sense - not because I think I'm particularly better than others, but because for anyone it seems like luck plays too big a role here and that's soul-crushing for too many people.

I also think that if we were admitted, they would've let us know much earlier. At best it's waitlist but most likely they are just busy and not bothering to send out rejections quickly... -

Yeh it's very bizarre indeed. I applied there last year as well, and nothing happened, just said submitted. Good luck to us! -

Has anyone heard back from Cornell? I've seen some rejections on the board. I didn't receive anything so I checked my application page, and strangely all the details I've submitted were deleted!? I don't know if this is a good sign. -

steve3020 replied to Straparlare's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Oh well it was my first time applying last year and I was still doing my UG, so i couldn't focus on application, and also my final year results weren't shown on my transcript either. This year I spent a few months on crafting my writing sample and SOP only + I've got some awards for my dissertation + got a French diploma. We'll see if all that was worth it... but even if I don't get accepted, I really enjoyed the experience of writing full time. -

Sorry about your rejection too, but we only need one place to accept us after all! I'm waiting to hear back from Cornell, Cuny, NYU, York and Toronto. I was waitlisted at NYU last year - it would be interesting to get rejected after having (in my opinion) significantly improved my application file haha. -

Hmm yeh I thought you were talking about something like this! Have you got any offers yet? I've just received my rejection letter from Brown (modern culture and media). That's five more to go, but if the CUNY acceptance on the result board is true then probably four -

@gyeum @Straparlare You guys got some interesting projects! What do you mean by politicising disciplines, Straparlare? Because that sounds like something I'd be interested in haha but maybe you mean something else than what I understand by it.
