  1. Thanks for the tip, Jessica. Well i mean I gotta get in first to worry about these things.... But yeh I applied to NYU too and if I move to NYC it'll be a whole lot different setup in life overall. ATM it is quite low in my worry list tho.
  2. yeah I doubt that they will remember past applications in any substantial detail. Overall I think it was in a way a good thing that I didn't get accepted in the first attempt. When I re-examined the faculties in those three institutions, I've either realised that I'd rather like to work with some other people than the ones I designated in my first application or I've found more interesting connections between my interests and POIs'. With hindsight I can say that my writing sample and SOP were quite bad. I couldn't help cringing at my past SOP when I read them again haha... It's a wonder how I got one waitlist last year. With regards to GRE I just think it's absolute bullshit. Luckily I'm not applying to departments like analytic philosophy or political science where they seem to really care about GRE score. I got mid-160s in verbal and I don't think anyone in my field would care.
  3. Just wanna know what people think about reapplying to the places you got rejected from the year before. I am doing this with three places, all which I'd very much like to go to. I believed I've improved my package with an extra year of preparation in every aspect except GRE (I only took it once and got a mediocre score but didn't think it was necessary to take it again). Has anyone done this and had positive results?
  4. Thanks yanaka and louise for advice. My laptop is Acer and it`s pretty hard to find where to buy the charger. I`m not in Tokyo so it`s even harder to find shops. This experience made me realise I should buy an Apple next time haha...
  5. Hi, does anyone know what time the deadline for CUNY complit is? I`m currently in Japan on holiday and i forgot to bring my laptop charger (yes i know very dumb) which resulted in not being able to submit my application. But because of the time difference when I go back home I will still have a few hours. Just wanted to check that the deadline is at the end of the day not some time before. It only says 1 Jan on the website so I`m assuming this must be the case. Anyone who knows about it please let me know!
  6. Congratulations on your success! Do you mind sharing a little bit about what you wrote in your statement of interest? I am also transitioning from politics to literature or philosophy so I'd like to know how you convinced the schools that your experiences in fine art actually make you a good candidate for masters in history. Thanks in advance.
  7. Yeh it's the same with me, I emailed few graduate directors on those programmes about this (previous education) and they all said they're open to people from different fields. I'm applying to Cornell, Brown, NYU, and Toronto cos they've got people who specialise in my area of interest. One thing about them is tho, that they require foreign language ability. All of them ask you to be able to be fluent in at least one language when you begin and second and third foreign languages will work in your favour I guess.
  8. Oh shit haha. Actually I asked a question about funding in Canada and one Canadian member told me that outside stipend (which is usually smaller than US schools) other expenses are usually covered by TAship. Isn't that the case?
  9. Hey there. From my research it seems some of them do? For example, i'm gonna apply to Comparative literature at U of Toronto and it says they guarantee funding. Well I might be wrong, I'll have to look at it again.
  10. Thanks a lot for the information on the course, it sounds great. About the visa, if I'm right Canada acknowledges your partner as 'dependent' if you lived together for more than a year I think, which we have. I heard it's very difficult to get a work visa if you are not super skilled in some specialist area. So that's the main reason I'm considering this route. Anyway thanks and good luck to you too.
  11. Hey everyone. I've got a question for those of you who are already doing your phd, finished, or professors, etc. So I've just graduated with a degree in politics, and I'm changing my field to comparative literature or english or media studies (Brown). There are a few schools in the US that I find ideal for my studies and interests. They got top scholars in the field and so on. Ok so my problem is that I got a gf who wants to move with me and I'm not American and neither is she so we'll need visas. But America doesn't allow your dependent to come and work there so she can't really come with me. On the other hand, Canada does allow you to bring your partner and give her rights to work there, so that'd be perfect for me and my gf. However, the problem is that there are fewer schools that match my interests there, and I can't really find the very top scholars in my specific field. Anyway I'm not asking here whether I should choose my personal life over career. I just wanna know what people think about doing grad work in Canada in English, Literature, Literary Theory, etc. Thanks!
  12. Thanks for your contribution TakeruK. I'm now applying to both American and Canadian schools, including 'elite tier' ones in the US and Toronto, McGill, etc. It seems you study planetary science which I guess is very dependent on good funding for research quality. My field is literature and philosophy - I imagine that Canadian schools can be also quite competitive internationally at least in these fields? But I wonder if a Phd from a Canadian school will be well recognised in Europe and America.
  13. Hi there, sounds like we have a similar range of interests. I also come from a background outside philosophy (politics), and study 'continental' philosophy mainly. I'm not too sure about philosophy as I am doing research on where to apply myself, but last year I applied to comparative literature courses because they tend to be very flexible with disciplinary boundaries. I ended up applying to complit because I followed certain authors I'm interested in such as Bruno Bosteels, Joan Copjec, Kenneth Reinhard, Kristin Ross, etc. who all happened to be in Complit or Cultural Studies departments. I'm not really answering your question about transitioning into philosophy, but you might want to have a look at other cognate fields (complit, literary theory, cultural studies, etc.) which seem to be more open to interdiciplinarians. I'm not sure about analytic philosophy but they tend to be very much theory-oriented with people working in political thought and contemporary european philosophy including Deleuze.
  14. Wow, thanks a lot TakeruK for your detailed explanation. I didn't know that stipend covers tuition in Canada. Was thinking that it'd be difficult to go to Canada because the tuition isn't covered.
  15. Hi Thrasymachus. Yes, true. So last year I just searched 'big names' in Lacan and Badiou and somehow they were all in comparative literature departments (Joan Copjec, Bruno Bosteels, Kenneth Reinhard, etc.). It'd be ideal to can study with one of these people, but given that my interests can change I thought that it wouldn't be bad to apply to a few philosophy ones as well. My main concern with applying to philosophy depts is writing sample. During my undergrad my tutors always said that my essays are all over the place, and once I took an analytic module and I got some horrible marks! I've been trying to address this problem but the very problematic that I deal with in my essays seems to prohibit me from achieving the same level of 'rigour' as analytic chaps.
  16. Hey people, I'm a second time applicant for phd programmes. I have what they call 'interdisciplinary' interests bordering on modern to contemporary philosophy, social and political thought, psychoanalysis, and so on. At the moment, the focus of my reading/writing is Lacan, Badiou, Marx, Heidegger, and Zizek. I've done my undergrad in the UK and there are courses here which are really custom-made for people like me. Places like Centre for modern european philosophy at Kingston, Dundee, Warwick, Essex, etc. all seem to have strong continental philosophy courses that blend political elements. But I'm applying to American ones for many reasons...and the picture seems more complicated in the States. Last year I've applied to only few courses in comparative literature, mainly because I didn't have much time to prepare applications. This time I am applying to both fields, which means that I have to do some research on which unis have a strong continental element. So far, I've found Stony Brook, DePaul, Emory, CUNY, Fordham, and SUNY Buffalo. So is there anyone who's in a similar situation? Let's share information and talk about our interests.
  17. Hey everyone, does anyone know how funding for Ph.d works in Canada and Austraila (or other English speaking countries)? Is it like in US (Masters & doctoral funding is integrated) or like UK (you have to do masters first in order to apply to phd courses)? I'm an international student with a UK degree.
  18. Hey guys, is it definitely a good sign if the department I'm waitlisted at asks me if I'm still interested in the course? Hope we all manage to get off waitlist!
  19. Thank you, Chris. I should probably do that! Does everyone think the same??
  20. Hi everyone, I have a question: when's the appropriate time to email the school that I'm waitlisted at to tell them I'm still interested? I initially replied to the waitlist notice email in mid-Feb and received a favourable but still ambiguous response. This is the school I really want to go, so any comment will be of help. Thank you!
  21. it could be that you're on an unofficial waitlist? i wanted to apply to duke too but didn't have enough time!
  22. Question: I was notified by email that I am on a waitlist at WUSTL in mid February and I replied to show my interest. When do you think is an appropriate time to email them again to tell them I'm still interested, or should I just not contact them at all? Thanks.
  23. i don't think you should despair while I only got waitlisted at one uni and got rejected everywhere else apart from ucla haha...
  24. i thought poi stands for person of interest, i.e. your potential supervisor, but correct me if i'm wrong. Just wanted to know if yours overlap with mine i didn't include him/her
