  1. I was reading the waitlist thread of 2015 and two people got in off the waitlist at UCLA at the last minute. Sorry I don't have any info on this year, but perhaps this may cheer you up.
  2. Hi TakeruK, I'm pretty sure you answered this question elsewhere but...Do you think this applies to humanities programmes too? I can understand that huge funding that top US schools provide may be crucial in scientific research but I wonder if the quality of teaching and research in humanities suffer due to this difference. As I'm on the waitlist for a top Canadian and a US school this may become relevant to me soon if I have to make a decision between them.
  3. Thanks again. I went ahead with asking the DGS politely for more information. Hopefully they'll let me know!
  4. Hi, thanks for reply. I think I didn't' make myself clear. The person whom I've been in touch with is the graduate administrator, not a graduate student. So he is the right person to go to about these questions. That's why I'm wondering if it's appropriate to go to the DGS when he says he doesn't have info about my position in the waitlist. And it's a Canadian university so they don't follow the 15 April thing I think...
  5. I wanna ask for people's opinions. So I emailed a graduate assistant at one university and got a reply that I'm on the waitlist and I should contact him again by the end of April. I asked him about my place on the waitlist but he doesn't have information. The question is: would it be annoying if I email the DGS and ask about how the waitlist works, what are my chances, etc.? I'm a bit hesitant because they didn't send out an official waitlist email or anything through the DGS, so it seems a bit too forward...yet I'm really eager to know what the chances are since this is one of my top choices. Any thoughts?
  6. I can understand why OP would ask this because not many British unis are well represented in the US. I went to a Russell group uni which is well known in the UK but I doubt that many people know about it across the Atlantic. It seems Oxbridge, Edinburgh and maybe St. Andrews and UCL are the few unis people are familiar with over there. Having said that having a BA from a UK university didn't hurt my chances too much. In general, they don't look at the reputation of your BA or MA university that much.
  7. Toronto's complit dept should notify today i think.. anyone still waiting for them??
  8. I think you might get more views if you post this in IHOG. Honestly I didn't even know this page (the lobby) existed. I'm super bored waiting on my apps and I'm just probing around the whole forum and being nosy. Also the prospect of hitting 100 posts and being promoted to double shot is quite exciting.
  9. Has anyone applied to York's Social and Political Thought programme? I'm guessing when you guys talk about York, you mean their politics department. I'm on the waitlist for MA in SPTH so I'd like to know if anyone who got an offer will be declining. Also I'm wondering how waitlist works in Canada. For my waitlists at American institutions I can't do much apart from waiting until 15 April, but what about this one??
  10. Thanks for the kind words. Actually hers isn't funded (but in the UK you can take out a student loan for masters now) so I tell her back that I would have easily got in an unfunded programme too haha. This is my second year too! It's really horrible to imagine that I might have to go through this yet once more and I guess you feel the same way. I hope you hear back good news soon too!
  11. Yeh, who knew that faceless strangers on the web could be more comforting than your partner or family. My gf has got into a master's programme back in January or something and hasn't ceased to take the piss out of me since then. U of Toronto said they would notify by the end of March. It seems like they are gonna stick to their words literally..
  12. Have you visited the schools? Perhaps that might be the only way to decide because one could produce an infinite list of reasons for/against X or Y...
  13. Anyone interested in saving me from hell? (just realised I've been spamming this thread but still...)
  14. I'm very happy for you! You deserve it!
  15. Hey!! congratulations! Which programme is it??
  16. I am in a similar situation as you, except worse because I am waitlisted for a Canadian MA too But anyhow I was wondering too about how Canadian universities compare against American ones in terms of reputation and job prospect. It seems like most Canadian phds end up in Canadian universities rather than in the US. Is this usually the case? If so, is it simply because it's easier to hire an American citizen in America, or also because they are deemed less reputable than top tier American universities? By the way, not having even visited America, I don't really know much about rankings there (basically I heard of Ivy league and Berkeley, that's the extent of my knowledge on this).
  17. I also wanna see more people getting in off waitlist so I can persevere through these hellish four weeks waiting ahead of me...ahh wish I could find a portal to a month later.
  18. I don't understand what's the big fuss about not contacting them as if it were some kind of serious offence, especially at this point. I mean, they aren't gonna go, 'OK, let's reject him now cos he annoyed me.' Am I wrong? Because nothing bad has happened to me from asking them about the timeline.
  19. You never know then! By all means don't get your hopes up too much - I was in the same boat last year, being waitlisted at one place and rejected from the rest, but I wasn't accepted eventually. Still there's a chance so it's too early to despair! And yeh, if you are 20, you are probably the very youngest among applicants. And I think you can reasonably assume that universities would prefer someone with more life experience if they have to make a choice between people who are academically comparable. I was 20 when I first applied too, and I'm still very young. So I suspect that's why I wasn't offered admission directly this year either (I'm on the waitlist for three places).
  20. I see you got waitlisted at UCLA - have you heard back from there yet? Anyways even if you don't get in there either, a waitlist at a top institution means you are pretty good. Don't lose faith! And I wanna second what @anxiousgrad said cos my gap year after BA helped me develop both academically and in terms of personality.
  21. It seems there are fewer waitlisters than last year. Also the wording on the email has slightly changed to the positive side I think maybe? I'd really love to go there by the way, it's a really good fit with me. I'm surprised that they released acceptances and waitlists in mid-March at the same time.
  22. I got an email from a professor. Nothing changed on my page.
  23. Waitlisted at NYU too...so that makes three waitlists and no accepts Does anyone claim Cornell or NYU accepts? Are you planning on accepting your offer?
  24. Thank you. Since I saw the report I'm so nervously waiting in front of my laptop and praying it's not yet another rejection...
