Yeah, I'm really glad I started this thread. Self care is so much more than just eating right and working out, but all the other things that have been mentioned thus far. I started there because IMO that's the hardest thing for me personally (especially eating. I love cooking, but never have time and hate cleaning). It's also something I think a lot of people don't think about when they start grad school (me, lol).

Like some of noted, don’t worry so much about not hearing from Purdue yet. It’s also very very likely they don’t invite MA applications to their visit weekend/fund MA visits. I only had one program offer a visit when I was applying for MAs (out of 4).

I’m totally going to PM you. Not that I’m a toad, but I have no routine. At all. I don’t know anything about skincare at all really if I’m being honest. Not the same thing, but I didn’t even know how to put on makeup until I was 21....
-
I really, really need to start with a skin care routine. I'm wanting to make an appointment with a dermatologist soon... ugh
-
I wasn't invited to it either, FYI (was asking for a friend who was very confused), and don't fret about radio silence from Purdue. As long as you aren't rejected, you're still in the running there. No idea if you'll receive acceptance before or after the event, though.

Yes yes yes, to all of this. Recently, I've been trying to make myself go to the gym, but my irregular schedule really gets in the way, and when I get busy it's always the first thing to go (when it shouldn't, it's really important). I'm also so bad about "treat yo selfs," like this week because of the acceptance I got EVERYTHING has been "treat yo self." I keep telling myself after the super bowl tonight I'll go on a real kick of getting active and eating better. I got an Apple Watch, and it's pretty good about motivating me to do something (nothing like a piece of technology you're a lazy POS), but since my thesis has picked up, I'm pretty much boxing everything out.... which isn't great.

This comes from another topic in which @CulturalCriminal said: This is so true! It's so hard to practice self care in graduate school. After spending a long time on campus, it's hard to want to cook, work out, or do anything but drink a glass (or 2) of wine and eat McDonalds. So, questions for you all: If you're already in grad school, how do you practice self care? If you aren't, how do you plan to practice self care? How will you keep yourself motivated?

It is a little annoying to have to wait so long, especially when it comes to finding a place to live. I’m in a college town for my MA so stuff fills up in like, November (the house I’m in now I think has been leased for next year since October). It worked out because I lived in the quieter, next town over my first year.

Maybe they have to rhetoric it out or something. You may have an even longer go at it because some programs notify MA acceptances after PhD! Some are the same though.
-
Right? It’s the only school I applied to in a relatively cool place.

Congrats on getting the good news! And good luck on the interview- blow them away! good idea to post updates, too, because same about keeping up with R/C people lol. I was accepted to UT Austin last week, and I’m still waiting to hear from everywhere else I applied (beyond the rejection from MSU). I think most rhet/comp programs, on average, notify later than lit programs. I think next week might have some updates, because that’s technically “mid February,” right?
-
Yes, that could be why, but also- don’t stress too much about Purdue. They do their acceptances different than most schools so “no news” for a while isn’t necessarily a rejection.

Let's Distract Ourselves!

Yeah, whenever I say that to others, they're like "What are you TALKING about!" and I'm just like uhh... it's just not good. I got into an argument about it once because someone was like "but he's creating a UNIVERSE!" which I guess is true, but the writing doesn't have to be bad! My roommate owns all the books, so maybe I'll give it another go. -

I just don’t like the way they’re written. I love the TV show, and I read LOtR, so I feel like I should be able to do it but I read half the first book and.... didn’t feel it. Maybe I’ll give it another try! -

I could never get into the Game of Thrones book! Props to you. -
Post-Acceptance, Pre-Visit

I've been reflecting on this over the past day, and this is so important. Only one of the programs I was accepted to for MAs did a visit for MA students, and I felt like I needed to show off and impress them. This might have been partly because I was insecure etc etc, but the people there also made me feel like I needed to do that as (In particular, one really awkward conversation with a POI stands out..) So, just another thing to think about. Someone in the pinned thread put it like this: this is a school's time to impress you. You've already impressed them with your application materials! -
sounds like a congratulations in the making!!!

CONGRATS!!!!

Did anyone get an email about Purdue’s prospective students day?

I was a history major (and then Spanish and then finally English), so you're all welcome here (I'm deciding for the ENTIRE forum).

I might PM you about Austin if that's okay. I have so many questions about the city. You've gotten me 50000x more excited, though!

No idea, hopefully you have good news coming! I've calmed down considerably. I went to tell one of my letter writers (a UT-A alum) and talked to her about the program and everything. This included walking up a large hill to walk from the parking lot to her office, so I got a lot of that nervous energy out!

Is a 157V enough for English MAs?

I just wanted to find this thread to say this (I didn't post earlier because I didn't want to jinx myself lolol): I never retook the GRE for PhD applications. I just received an acceptances to UT-Austin, who list 90% on their admissions page. I was in 75%. Last night I was reading old GRE threads panicking about my scores, but it's totally possible. -
Good points- I need to gather my wits still. And thanks everyone. Congrats to all the other acceptances, and hopefully there's more good news coming today! I ran out of upvotes, or else everyone would have one!
