I see Murakami fans, awesome! I used to be a book worm in junior and high school but no longer consider myself one these days. After watching a Japanese drama (Algernon ni Hanataba o) with a very popular actor (Yamashita Tomohisa aka Yamapi), I went to the local library (which is just a 5 minute walk from my apartment (cool!) and because the school's library did not have the book (not cool) ), I signed up for a library card to check out Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Interesting story that's making me feel feels again (as if the drama did not do that already)

I'm the opposite, really. I didn't like reading in middle/high school, but started to love it by the end of high school and beginning of college. I had a totally different attitude from school then and basically hated any kind of reading I had to do associated with school.

I haven't had much time to read with moving and getting ready for school but I recently read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot and am currently reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? By Philip K. Dick.

Yeah it was built in 1962! I actually didn't realize it until I went to plug in my blow dryer. @Danger_ZoneI think it is an old house thing. It doesn't really bother me too much. So my second bedroom is storage/me blowing my hair place ha.

It doesn't bother me earlier, I just sometimes use a hair dryer and straightening iron. It was pretty strange at first though!

  3. @Effloresce thank you! :)

@Pink Fuzzy Bunny Thanks! It was way more stressful than I thought it would be. I called so many places only to find out there were no apartments, and apartments I made appointments with wanted were taken by the time I got there. I was worried there would actually be nothing left as it's too late to really apply to housing on-campus.

So I have officially left the Airbnb and am in my new place.  The ac totally broke, but the landlord had a repair guy here in an hour.  Quite impressed.  The layout is odd so it'll take some adjusting to figure out where to put things and what furnishings will be best, but overall I think I will be ok here.

@Danger_Zone Congrats!  Glad it worked out and just in time too.  If you haven't already thought of this take photos of your new place to document what is and isn't there, any existing damage, and the overall condition of the place.  Not crappy cell phone photos (unless of course you have a very nice phone), but actual camera photos (if you can't borrow one most major drugstores still sell disposables) that can be enlarged if necessary.  Do this again when you move out, that way if your landlord tries to say you trashed the place you have proof otherwise.

That's exciting! I hope you enjoy your new place. :)

That's a great idea, and I'll have to make sure to do it. I used to take pictures when I moved out of student housing because my suitemates were always.. Untidy to say the least, and you could be charged quite a bit if you left the place messy.

@hippyscientist Congrats! That's really exciting. Hope everything goes smoothly for you!

I'm not sure what part of the US you're going to, but it is also possible that private owners are saying that to decline same sex couples and rather than get flamed for that they're just saying "no unmarried couples."  Either way I agree that it is discriminatory, but again I don't know that they can be forced to change because they aren't public housing.

And yay!  You successfully passed customs!  You won't worry about anything, you'll just sleep for now =)

I believe same sex marriage has been legal here for a couple years, but it would make sense in that case. Perhaps that was the reason and what I'm reading on the internet is people complaining about this happening in the past, or the apartment rules haven't been updated to accommodate for the changed laws. Or maybe some people are uncomfortable with the idea of an unmarried couple living together?

@Danger_Zone I know how you feel! Bf and I would be married but he's worried about his parents' health. Besides we have our whole lives to be married. There's no rush really. But I've seen that requirement for some places as well. Or they ask for a bigger deposit if you aren't married. Its lame.

That is kind of ridiculous if places ask for a bigger deposit, but I suppose they can do what they please. I'd like to be married already but I think it might cause some issues with my (non)-immigrant status in the US. It might look suspicious if I were to marry here. I really don't want to wait 5+ years but I guess I don't have much of a choice.

So my sister told me that one of our cats has been wandering around day after day looking for me. I am heartbroken. You can't really explain to an animal that you are moving away but will be visiting eventually. :(

    Most popular questions:

    1) So what do you do with X degree after you get your Ph.D.? (tempting answer: become a shamaness and guide the world after the apocalypse annihilates civilization)

    2) Wow, why does X degree take so long? (tempting answer: I don't know, how long should it take to become familiar with everything written about the history of European Civilization in the past 50 years or so?)

    3) Can you answer X random question about the Nazis? (tempting answer: #notallgermanhistorians)

    Please pardon the saltiness.

I get questions like the third one all the time! I get questions about the War of 1812, various other wars, ancient history.. And when I can't answer it I get "but I thought you knew history." I do! Just a very, very minuscule portion of it on a topic you probably don't care about.

Oh and then I get this one from my boyfriend: "Why would you choose to go to school for even more years? you nerd." :P

@Danger_Zone Do you mean some campus affiliated housing requires a couple to be married if they wish to live together?  I guess they are allowed to make their own rules, but I'm not sure how they can truly enforce that.  Seems like most couples would just lie and then what?  Campus police barges in trying to catch you in the act?  Or do you mean housing owned by private owners and it is their preference that a couple be married if living together.  While unfair, with private property I don't know that they are held to the same standards as public housing.

Are you set on an apartment?  If zillow and trulia are popular where you are then you might find other options...townhouses, duplexes, etc.

Private owners, I mean. It just seems kind of discriminatory to me. I would totally be married now if I could, I promise!

I am thinking of getting an apartment for the year then looking into housing during the summer so I have more time to look. I will look into those though, thanks!

Guys it's happening!! I just went through customs and am waiting at the gates! It actually was much easier than I thought. I was just asked for my I-20 then I went through. What a relief that was. Now I can worry about housing and banking and missing my family and my sanity because I got absolutely no sleep last night.

I put down a deposit on my new home today!  And thank goodness too because I can't take another teeny underweared man sighting lol.  I am still sad about not having a tub though.

@Danger_Zone You'll find something!  If everyone assured you that you can find something around now then you can.  Maybe two weeks ago I was pretty upset because everything I was finding was awful.  Turns out I just didn't know where to look so some of the locals clued me in to the better sites to use and then I found something.

That's great! I hope you like your new place. It's too bad there's no tub, though (but at least there are no men in their underwear? :P)

Thanks, I'm hoping so! The soonest I can visit is on Friday, and many places have told me that they either have one place left or it's doubtful that there will be anything when I arrive. There are also some apartments in off-campus student housing but I need to find out if my boyfriend can move in with me. Oh and I also found out that some places won't allow you to share a bedroom as a couple unless you're married! I could not believe that one, but luckily I haven't encountered that in my search yet.

  8. The lack of apartments for rent is starting to make me nervous. I'm not able to go visit until the end of next week and a few places have told me they might not have anything by then. I am hoping I can find just one place that works for my boyfriend and I. I guess I should have looked into apartments earlier but everybody assured me that I would have no problem finding them at this time...

I also just e-mailed one place right now so that I wouldn't forget in the morning, and they got back to me from their phone (it's 1:30am!) Now I'm afraid I've woken them up or something... why would they reply to me at 1:30am??

And I've finally got settled in at Lubbock. I'm interning at a local science museum and our rental house has been officially cleaned! I'm hoping to get a job I applied for or receive a paid position at the museum I'm interning at. I'm planning on asking at the end of my internship so they can see how awesome I am! :-P Of course I need to actually know people's names/correct pronunciation. I felt awkward the first couple of days but I think I'm fitting in nicely. Or at least I hope....I'm also covered in 10 bug bites when I was outside for 5 mins. I really hate nature sometimes. @Danger_Zone They will get use to it! I've never been homesick but my family was never actually home lol. My relationship also improved when I left the house. Funny how distance does that! @sjoh197 I'm not a huge fans of diamonds, I kinda find them boring. Yay carbon. I like aquamarines too! Bf and I have started getting the engagement questions, we would like to buy a house first.

Good luck with your job applications, and the internship!! :)

I guess I've had the opposite situation. My parents are kind of always around, I was never  left at home by myself growing up. I got my privacy once I went off to university, but I ended up coming home a lot anyway because I hated my roommates.

@hippyscientist I don't see the big deal either, but initially my parents were acting like I was going out of my way to get out of the house and get away from them. I don't know if me moving far away is making them insecure or what.

Are you the youngest? Oldest? In the middle? Only child?

I found that the relationship between me and my parents improved drastically when I moved out.

I'm the oldest of 3. I'm the first to leave so I guess they are taking it particularly hard... also the fact that I am moving far away. -_-

I'm hoping it will improve our relationship as well, though. A house of parents with their adult children makes things more crowded and stressful.

Good grief men are gross.  There are even more guests here and they're all couples.  I'm drowning in couples and there are underwear clad men and shirtless men everywhere.  I never thought I'd be sick of the sight of not properly clothed men but oh how I am.

One of my suitemates used to have her boyfriend over all the time, and one time I came downstairs and he was cooking eggs in his underwear. I said hi rather awkwardly. My suitemate could not stop apologizing on his behalf. :-P

Good to hear that other campuses are just as bad. :D

Don't get me wrong. The game is fun, but it's crazy how popular it is. I guess that at this point a lot of college students have been exposed to Pokemon their entire lives. Makes me feel old.

It hasn't even been released in Canada and already the Canadian police are warning us not to play it. I wanted to check it out next week in the US but I probably don't need something else to distract me (but I'll still do it anyway I'm sure.)

  13. I think we all sometimes feel like there are others better off than us, or that there is something different about us that makes us feel left out. I think because you're self-conscious about it you're going to be the one noticing things like this, not anybody else.

Although I'm not in the same situation as you, I do know what it's like to feel like others are in more favourable circumstances than I am. I did have my education paid for by a relative, but not being on financial aid made me ineligible for all summer research opportunities. This feels downright unfair when you're trying to apply for grad school and see fellow classmates presenting at conferences and conducting research with professors. And I know other people being able to spend their money more freely, or having academic or wealthy backgrounds, can feel unfair as well, but you have to remember that you've ended up exactly where they are regardless. People have different backgrounds and different experiences but still share certain qualities and goals. Try to put a positive spin on your circumstances and experiences. Try to find similarities between you and your cohort rather than focusing on the differences.

I'm fairly positive I'm going to be TA'ing for a history of science survey course. My understanding is that's what all first year students get assigned.

It'd probably be more stressful for most students (because most students don't have a strong history of science background), but I've taken all of these courses from this institution, and I've already been a grader for one of the survey courses.

    Shouldn't be too bad, I think. :)

    That doesn't sound so bad!

I really have no idea what I would be TA'ing for. I will say that I'm super jealous at all of the history courses being offered to undergrads, though. My undergrad institution was incredibly lacking in course offerings for history.

I also feel like I'm the only one who is looking forward to being a TA... maybe that will change. :P

  15. I haven't really been that productive, but I guess I wanted to relax while I can. So I've been reading books, watching a lot of movies, playing a lot of video games, shopping and working on learning German. I've also been spending time with my family before I move and doing some last minute things at home (packing, getting my documents together, getting check ups at the doctor's and dentist's, etc.) I also took my first vacation which was to Disney World!

I was supposed to be volunteering for a local genealogical society but they're too unorganized and were a no-show at my interview. I've been contacting them every summer and they never have room for me, then I finally get an interview and realize how unprofessional they are. I didn't really have a back up plan as I expected to be working there...

I'll be happy when I find out what my assignment is. I really like to plan and be prepared... but it's hard to plan and prepare if you don't know what you're doing. lol

Me too. Apparently I will find out only 2 weeks before the class starts... But at least I get to list my preferences for which class to be a TA for, so hopefully I will get something I want.

@Danger_Zone I found out about the new edition yesterday!! I was so excited. I just downloaded it on my kindle and look forward to reading the two novellas.

That's great, I hope you enjoy it! I own a few more Murakami books I need to get through, so I'm probably waiting until the paperback edition comes out. It will be really exciting to read his earliest works, though.

@Danger_Zone I love that book! I've read everything by Murakami except for his first two books, which aren't widely available in English. Man, I'd love to get my hands on copies of "Pinball, 1973" and "Hear the Wind Sing."

Awesome! I'm really enjoying it so far, and I love Murakami novels in general. Up to this point I've read After Dark, A Wild Sheep Chase, Norwegian Wood, Kafka on the Shore, and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. By the way, I don't know if you know this, but Murakami just re-released those books as Wind/Pinball: https://www.amazon.com/Wind-Pinball-novels-Haruki-Murakami/dp/0385352123

    That's impressive, @Neist! Hope you enjoyed. :)

Jumping on the Airbnb bandwagon here. I've had a very good experience with them each time I've used the site. I rented a poolhouse in Pasadena and an apartment in San Diego. I've got a basement apartment in a family house for a week before I move into my apartment too. The flexibility can be awesome. Yes, it's a little odd initially but that's quick to get over. Also, @Danger_Zonecheck what the rental market is like where you're moving to - a lot of places have August-August leases and it's near impossible to find anything outside the renting season. Worth investigating.

Well if I can't move in until August that's fine anyway, I'm hoping to call ahead of time and find out what's available. So I guess I will just ask about that when I call, thanks for mentioning that.
