  1. Especially considering last year I believe they only interviewed 40 people for 10 spots... Maybe they'll be taking a bigger class? I'm not applying to this school so I have no idea what the website might say in regards to class size this year.
  2. Yeah, I never wrote over because of an experience from school. I took a class with a friend and we had a paper that was supposed to be 1 page double spaced on a in-depth topic where it was hard to stick to this limit (just like our statements!). My friend submit two pages for this project (she was enthusiastic about the subject and thought that would show in the paper). The professor wasn't too pleased with this, took her aside and told her the page limits weren't a "suggestion", that they were in place for a reason due to her time constraints and it showed a lack of respect to not follow them. The teacher only graded the first page and my friend only received like a 50% on it. Soo ever since then, I've always followed to a T because I can understand there are limits for a reason and was terrified that the overage would not be looked at/not graded, or my paper would be thrown out entirely for a clear lack of ability to follow directions (such as job applicants that will throw out entire applicants because you submitted a 2 page resume when they specifically asked for 1 page). All my statements that I submitted were almost exactly 500 words or 750 or whatever the limit was because I wrote what I wanted and then slowly went through and edited down as needed.
  3. Baylor has a good chance of making the deadline (mid March) for Match. Arizona could make it by the deadline, but I’m not holding my breathe on it. It likely would be accredited slightly after the deadline, maybe a little after Match Day, but def by early summer. They are planning to take students who didn’t do Match/participate in the unmatched selection process. KGI I have no idea. I’m hoping the accreditation board tries to push through a couple programs so they can participate.
  4. Lots of updates on more upcoming programs here: https://med.ucf.edu/news/new-genetic-counseling-program-moving-forward/ (noted a desire to have first class start fall 2018, which is unlikely with new process unless all second match?) https://geneticcounseling.uconn.edu/ (not accepting apps and will have a summer start date) https://www.unmc.edu/news.cfm?match=20759 (starting w/ 10 students with intent to have a class of 20 thereafter, hasn't even found a program director) https://news.vanderbilt.edu/2017/12/11/vanderbilt-university-school-of-medicine-to-offer-new-masters-degree-in-genetic-counseling/ (first class expected fall 2019, director may not be a genetic counselor?) This little blurb made me feel a little worse about my chances of getting in "There are upward of 25 highly qualified applicants for each existing position, so we are turning away really good people in a field that desperately needs them.” Lol so a 4% chance of getting in even as a qualified applicant... if we look at it like that (and who knows where that number came from).
  5. Oh gosh, I hope not... But at the bottom of that page it noted that the new policy went into affect 1/2/2018. So I would assume programs who have already submitted their applications are grandfathered in to the old policy?
  6. Gosh I'm envious! I have two more to submit myself, but I'll likely get them in by the end of this week
  7. Now that I have one interview, it has surprisingly made the waiting process harder. Even worse, I think I am so anxious about dates because I just started a new job so my 90 days isn't until April 4th... and I haven't mentioned that I am applying to grad school. I told them up front I had a vacation already planned for early March, but now I may need random days here an there. I am actually hoping for April interview (like UT's on 4/6) so I can try my hardest NOT to take time off or fake call in sick.. Cuz I really do like my new position already! I don't want to make a few "silly" mistakes during my 90 days to ruin my chances of staying on board IF I don't get in again this year. Maybe I should have sucked it up at my previous position, but I'm soo glad for the switch. I am working in a medical lab that mainly does pathology reports on skin samples. I've learned so much already and am getting to actively use medical terminology, ICD-10 codes, and other cool healthcare stuff.
  8. @Blizzard Yeah I’d second @TAGC, as long as they’re in by the deadline I wouldn’t worry. I only just turned in a majority of mine this last week and still have two more to finish anyway.
  9. Just got offered an interview at UAMS I'm so excited!
  10. Lads year i had that problem. I emailed two week and then one week reminders. She did eventually get them in in time.
  11. Silly question, but you emailed in your supplemental app and supporting documents right? In my email with that information I had asked "If possible, could you please confirm whether or not my application is completed in full." to which the coordinator responded "I will be sending out updates over the next few weeks", so I wouldn't worry too much about it now.
  12. On the second page the "For Office Use" section doesn't have the fill in boxes. Plus, they likely have the full version of Adobe Acrobat to go back in and add them if needed. Or they just print them off and hand fill out those sections. Pretty sure I sent a scanned copy last year and didn't have a problem with it either.
  13. Why don't you think it's appropriate? That's exactly what I did, printed it off, signed, and scanned back. I got a "thank you" back and they didn't indicate any issues with this.
  14. I'm applying to mostly West Coast/Southwest schools as you can see in my signature. But I am applying to Arkansas if you happen to be too.
  15. Being a second year applicant, I feel like I have a lot riding on getting in this year. My mother has been wonderful enough to cover the application expenses of applying to 8 schools both rounds... I feel like I would have to cover application costs if I were to apply a third time. Overall, my application is a lot better compared to the year before, but I still don't feel great on it. I have kind of resigned myself to getting interviews from just two of the 8 schools (one where I know the program director and the other gives every applicant an interview). I'm not sure if that's being too pessimistic or what, but I really had my hopes crushed last year when I didn't even get an interview last year. I just really don't want to apply a third time... The other thing that sucks is I won't know till late April whether or not I get in. At least I'm working full-time and I have another class starting in January, so I will be really busy with other things to help with the waiting period between applying and getting interviews.
  16. I found those positions on Glassdoor or by google by adding a city after my search.
  17. You can search indeed and other job sites for "Genetic Counselor Assistant" typically yields more results than "Counseling". The monopoly of these positions are at GeneDx, but I believe Myriad has some, Philadelphia Children's, places in Illinois, Wisconsin, and some areas of California have a few positions. For me, I would have had to relocate for any GCA position I found, which didn't make sense when I would likely be moving again the next year once I got into grad school. If the GCs you know work in a hospital setting, they typically don't have access to easily add on a GCA position. The two I volunteer with have a medical assistant that helps them part-time, and they are hopeful to eventually have enough data to show a need for a full time GCA position, but they do not believe that would happen anytime soon. As current GC's become busier, I believe the need for assistants will pop up, but for now it's still a very niche and limited position (both in positions available and locality of these positions as well). I applied to a few of these positions and never heard back.
  18. We’ll still get rejections from schools that decide not to interview us, but once you interview all information will be provided on match. I don’t think we’ll even get an official “you’re rejected” from schools, we’ll get the school we got into or that we weren’t matched (meaning rejected/waitlisted and then no spot opened from all..)
  19. Dixie State is anticipating the first class to start Fall 2019. I'm always just excited about new programs as it opens up more and more spots for prospective students
  20. If you go to the Results tab at the top you can hit Results Search and then type in genetic counseling. This link will take you straight there: https://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=genetic+counseling&t=a&o=&pp=250 I It's also nice as some people are kind enough to put in their stats so you can (cautiously) compare yourself to those who were given interviews/those accepted to see where you stand on the GPA/GRE score side of things. But we all know that a variety of factors go into decisions on those things, blah, blah, blah There people update information about interview invites, waitlists, acceptances etc. It's likely more useful for some programs that don't have a universal acceptance day, but very informative come when more interview invites start to happen as you can see which schools have sent out invites and kind of gauge whether you should be hearing from them soon or cross them off the list.
  21. Looks like someone just posted that they did get a call from them today.. Not sure if that was you or someone else, but you definitely still have time as they invited people to interviews in February as well.
  22. I put "See supplemental application" For work I put my average hours/week but for places where I volunteered/internships I put my total hours as I knew exactly how many hours I completed. You will likely need to submit these, especially if you have any pending prereqs as they'll want to see those grades. Final unofficial transcripts showing you graduated with your degree are likely required a little after Match as that's a requirement for admission so they will see the grades eventually.
  23. I got mine figured out. My friend has access to the paid version of Adobe and converted my PDF to a Word Doc which I was able to upload successfully. So, I think it being a PDF is the issue.. You can wear any of that. You want to have a professional/business look. So, a nice sheath dress and blazer, dress pants/skirt and shirt, etc. Don't feel like you have to shy away from color as long as it's tasteful. Accesories are also fine, just don't over do it. You can wear heels, but make sure you are comfortable walking in them/bring a pair of flats to change into for tours etc. Just use common sense and dress like you're going to any other job interview. If you look through the 2016 GC Applicants thread, I know a few people posted what they were going to wear around February or so? Also look through other threads on GradCafe, I'm sure other people have asked about outfits.
  24. I'm not sure if it's because it's a PDF? My resume is a Word doc and I believe I tried to upload a PDF and had the same conversion issue. So, I'm not sure if that's the issue. I might send an email to the program shortly to see what the issue is. I do not remember this being a problem I had last year.
  25. Is anyone having trouble with uploading files for UTHealth's application? I keep trying to upload my GRE Score report, but it always says "conversion failed".
