Thank you! That helps me a lot. With working my classes are limited to evening or online, so I might not be able to take an intro counseling class. I just found a grad level Public Health class on telemedicine that I thought would be interesting, so I am enrolled in that. I will likely take an intro human histology class that is grad level as well. I think I should force myself to take the other semester of biochem, and then round it out with the health psych class!

Yes! I very strongly want to go to Arizona, for one I live here already and have done undergrad here, so of course it's my number 1. But that puts soo much pressure on making sure I nail the interview and hope that they love me. But I still need to be smart about the others ranking so that I am TRULY happy when I get my offer. That's why they strongly tell you to only rank programs you'd ACTUALLY attend, but they tell you to not leave programs off as that lessens your chance of getting in too.

Pros for us: we are given our highest preferred program if we are ranked at that school and there are spots, no more waiting/stand stills waiting for movement from other applicants (takes away the "applicant 1 waitlisted at 1st choice program A, but accepted to 2nd choice program B while applicant 2 is waitlisted at 1st choice program B, accepted to 2nd choice program A" theoretical problem, we will get our acceptance right away, takes away some of the stress of match day Cons: takes away some of our ability to choose between programs as we only get one acceptance, could still end up without a placement if not ranked/ranked low on a waitlist by the school, Canadian applicants might have specific issues/cons that affect them more drastically Pros for programs: more streamlined, less work for the program, should make it easier for every program to fill their class Cons: their preference is second to applicants choices, could still end up with empty seats (I'd bet that they will keep the second match process to combat this??) That's just what I've thought of, I bet there's more for both sides!

Hi guys! So not sure if anyone has some suggestions about classes I should retake. Basically, I think a big issue with my application this year was my science GPA/prereq grades. I figured I should try retake some of the ones I received a C in as well as take the other semester of Biochem as I only took one semester. So I'm thinking of retaking OChem I (which I've taken twice already), Biochem I, and then a random assortment of Psych classes (because I'm looking to add a minor on if I am allowed to after I graduate). Psych classes I'm looking at are: Health psych, Psych of Death and Loss, and Intro Cognitive Psych/Cognitive development. Are there any other suggestions of classes I should look into? I know embryology would be beneficial, but none of the programs I'm looking at require it. Counseling classes? Try to improve my sign language by taking more semesters of that? I've already taken a medical terminology class, Stats, and Calc and received A's/B's in those.

I would love a GC assistant position, but there's none in my city. I've already signed a lease and committed to my new job, so I'm not looking to move this year. My shadowing I'm trying to set up will allow for me to do some of the paperwork etc too, so it'll be kind of like an unpaid GC internship.

I think I just found it or at least one similar. They're expecting a class size of 24! That's crazy Here's the link if anyone else is interested: http://www.kgi.edu/news-and-events/amgen-gift-to-fund-launch-of-new-kgi-human-genetics-and-genetic-counseling-degree-program

I think the one nice thing about having to wait another year is that I can be more selective about schools (to a point). Is anyone else changing where they are applying this next year? I think my (incomplete) list so far is as follows: UCI, CSUStan, Utah, UTHealth, Arizona, KGI School of Pharmacy, and Augustana. So 7 programs still but some slight changes. I applied to 8 programs this year: UCI, Stanford, CSUStan, UTHealth, Utah, Augustana, Oklahoma, and Colorado. I really want to be close to Arizona, which is why i changed my mind on a few schools/based on my interactions with them this cycle. @kds27 I am a bit interested in how a GC program is going to set up at a Pharmacy school! How are they going to make it autonomous, but still welcoming from GC students?

Yes! So the information I have is from February when I last met with my mentor. At that time she had submitted their letter of intent and just had to send in the actual application. Our Board of Regents formally approved the program in March I believe? So we are still on track for opening Fall 2018. Last I heard, they want to take 5 students the first year and then 5 the next and then re-evaluate and see if they can accommodate a larger class the following years. I do not have specifics on rotations, though there may be a chance that some rotations are in Phoenix since it's a larger city (without a GC program), that has a huge network of genetic counselors and Tucson has around 3 that actually see patients still. I will be meeting up with her again beginning of summer and can ask for more information then! This prompted me to go look at the accredited programs page and there's two more programs that have submitted since I last checked! KGI School of Pharmacy in CA (near Los Angeles) and MGH Institute of Health Professions in MA! While not getting in sucked and our chances decrease as more people become aware of genetic counseling, there are TONS of programs that are in the process of opening which gives us more potential seats to fill

I'm for sure asking my old boss and the GC who I consider my mentor/who is the new program director at Arizona for a letter again, since they wrote me a letter this cycle. And hopefully once I get this shadowing set up, I can ask the cancer GC. Then I'll have 2 GC letters of rec!

Was in contact with the cancer GC I know and she's actively working to get my shadowing set up! (It's through a very setup hospital so there's been lots of hoops to jump through before I've been able to onboard and shadow/volunteer with her) but hopefully everything gets finalized soon and I can start seeing cases!

Since I've known since March, I'm doing fine now. Once I got the last rejection that I was holding out hope for, I cried. Bummed around about it for two more days and then put my full force into finding a job. That instant turnover really did help me since I accepted a position two weeks ago!! I start June 5th I recently accepted a position as a Client Services Associate (will be promoted to a Client Services Manager once I'm trained) at a national home healthcare agency. My role will basically be handling the scheduling of RNs, health aides etc, for our clients who need assistive care. I will also work on the hiring process of new nurses, sometimes do home visit of new clients, and do payroll and other paperwork needed. This will give me experience of working with patients, a better view into the healthcare field, as well as some experience with insurance. The other way I am trying to strengthen my application is to continue to take one or two classes at my university to improve my science GPA/take grad level courses to show that I can do the work. There is a grad level nursing class that is based on genetics and its role in healthcare that I am about to sign up for. And I'm still in the process of trying to set up weekly (at a minimum monthly) shadowing with one of the cancer genetic counselors in town. I just recently joined "The Red Shoe Society" which is a young professionals group that works with the local Ronald McDonald house, so I can gain some networking as well as help with fundraising and volunteering at the RMH. I will have to quit my weekly volunteering at the AIDS foundation, but might be able to do their walk in hours still, haven't figured that out yet. I was also thinking about doing the crisis textline as well, as that is an area I am lacking in, but I feel that my new career along with the other things I have in the works should be fine for advocacy experience. Def start one if you'd like! I'll definitely join in. I've still been lurking ever since I got my last rejection. I was going to reach out mid-May, probably a little after my graduation as I know they still have a lot of things to handle and work out with the incoming class. Since I applied to 8 schools, that's kind of the silver lining to me as I will have TONS of feedback to work from!

I'm going to be a second year applicant who didn't get any interviews, so you're more than welcome to reach out to me too, I just have a slightly different take, since I've known since early March that I wasn't getting in.

I think you'll still have time to find something in July, especially since you aren't considering student only housing. I know many people have their places up for sublease and are very willing to negotiate the rent. So you could find a furnished place to stay for a month or two (July through August?) and then you would be able to go tour and physically see places before you sign a lease so you don't rush into anything! Sandpiper looks like a good option though! It's very close to where my boyfriend lives currently and I like the area. Would be very easy to get to campus too!
-
I did tour Wasko and I loved it! Everything is brand new, still decently close to campus and I thought it was a decent price for everything. I would've signed for a lease there for a one bedroom, but they wanted to fill asap and I ended up finding a gorgeous 2 bedroom duplex that was cheaper and a little closer to where I wanted to be. Sandstone seems to be more serious/older students from what I can tell (I had a friend who lived there and when I visited it was never loud or anything). I'd say you have a great list though and of course just reading reviews online and then actually touring I'm sure you'll find something that works for you and your spouse. And welcome to Tucson/the University of Arizona! Moving to Tucson fro undergrad was the best decision I ever made and I hope you end up loving it just as much as I do
-
Not a bad area! It will definitely be more families and not so much students. If you have specific questions let me know. So far I think the apartments you are considering are pretty good. I don't really have any recommendations beyond that. When I was looking for apartment I considered both Sandstone and El Dorado, though I didn't visit them. (And from the photos Fort Lowell looks very nice!) If I recall correctly, Sandstone has a shuttle to campus which is convenient since you won't have a car, but I'm not 100% sure.

They had a program until it shut down in 2005 due to lack of administrative support, so I have no doubt they'll get accredited pretty fast without an issues I'm very excited for it too!

Hi I go to Arizona currently for undergrad! Since I didn't get any interview offers this cycle, I am very interested in attending the GC program here once it opens. I love the area and really don't want to move if possible. But basically it means that they have sent a letter to ACGC that they would like to open a program at Arizona. They have to submit the completed application form within 3 months of the letter being received. From there it could take 6-9 months (or longer!) for ACGC to go through the application process and decide whether to grant them accreditation or not. If granted, then they can start recruiting for their first class. I'm close to the program director and she wants to have the first class starting Fall 2018, so if everything goes smoothly they will be accepting applications this coming fall or next spring (with a later due date and interview times) like Thomas Jefferson and Bay Path did this cycle.

I feel that Tucson is very LGBT friendly; however, I do not personally have experience. I haven't heard of any places that friends have been scared to go to. You are right that the campus has a great community though! There's a department of LBGT affairs and I feel that they would be able to help you out! Here's a link to their site: http://lgbtq.arizona.edu/

Wow, I am still waiting to hear from CSU... I finally emailed since my calls keep going to voicemail. It still says pending under my application. For anyone who did get a rejection, did your application decision change from pending to rejected? I'm just confused since rejections went out 2 weeks ago, and interviews went out a little before then. This is my last chance basically, so I just want to stop hoping if it's gonna be a rejection.

I tried calling both UCI and CSUStan to inquire about my application status. Both went to voicemail so that's kind of annoying. I'm going to call back later today to see if they answer.

Pretty sure I'm out this cycle. Just got rejected from Augustana, haven't heard from CSU or UCI but they already sent out invites sooo.. Good luck everyone who has interviews! You'll see me back here next year for sure. Gonna take some much needed days to focus on me and plan for what is my new future (applying to more jobs, hitting up my school's career fair, the whole 9 yards). Sucks my week started out like this (plus I have strep), but gonna try to be positive about it and just keep working to improve my application for the next cycle.
