I think his honesty is better than not putting out your best work! I did not end up getting my personal statement looked over today, but I am going to set up an appointment right now so that I can have a better edition to give to my LOR writers. I feel I'm on okay candidate, so I don't know if cutting out 2 schools is that big of a deal for me, but it's looking more and more like my university is not going to have their program ready in time, which means I am 100% having to go out of state, which is a huge bummer for me (as I did not want to do long distance with my boyfriend if I didn't have to). But a couple of the school's in locations that I would be okay with living for the next two years are ridiculous when looking at COL.. So I am in a weird tango of deciding whether to take them off of my list, even though I love the location and things about the school, and maybe add other school's in a less favorable location, but more realistic COL.

Wow, way further than I am, so congrats on that! I have the basic gist of what my Personal Statement will be (finally 3 pages long with everything I want to include, just needs to be editted and perfected/cut down for schools that only wnat 500 words...). I am taking it into my school's Career Services center (they look over Resumes/CVs and PSs specifically on top of other Career related things) today. I am working on setting up a time to ask my GC mentor for a letter of Rec, we've been playing email tag the past few weeks. She offered to write me one last semester, so this is more a formality than anything. I need to set up a time to talk to my boss to have him write me one, and set up a time with my internship director to ask her to write me one. I have half started 2 applications, working on getting access to all of my unofficial transcripts (I took dual credit in high school at a tiny CC and their transcript request process isn't set up very well). I received from information from Texas when they had their GC day and it mentioned that most people apply to 5-6 programs and applying to more doesn't seem to improve the chances of getting in, so I am debating shortening my list from 8 to 6 because there's already a few schools on my list solely because I wanted a higher chance of getting in and wouldn't love going there, but would if it was the only place I got into.

Most appear to want an introduction Psych class and/or Developmental psych. I have see one program list Abnormal psych too. Most schools only want one semester, in which case intro psych would probably be best, if they want two semester, intro and abnormal or dev. psych would work. I think credit courses would probably be best. Check out your local community college. Mine offers psych courses that directly transfer/correlate to the matching psych classes at my university. I am thinking of taking the course at the community college to save money, but have not decided yet. The GC that I know recommended psych classes to be in person. Psychology is such an interpersonal subject that she said getting the material in person can sometimes be beneficial.

Just got my results from my second GRE, I went from a 311 to a 312 (When calculating the total GRE score, the writing part isn't included right?). Scored exactly the same on the writing and was so certain I'd done better, but at least I didn't do worse and I did improve my math score by 2 points which I think will help a little. Currently working on my Personal Statement in preparation for applications. My GC mentor offered to write me a letter of Rec at our last meeting in the Spring. I was wondering if it were best to remind her in August, but wait until September (or later even) to actually give her the materials (i.e. my PS, transcripts/whatever else she needs)? 1) because most applications do not open until around September and 2) because I'd like to have that month to get used to my upcoming internship and use that chunk of time to better explain/relate my internship in my PS. I just want her to have a better understanding of it than the basic filler stuff I have on my PS at the moment if that makes sense.

Okay, thank you! That's what I was thinking, I just didn't want to seem like I was avoiding it either. So, I'll just see if any schools require just my Major GPA and then I'll explain in those PS's but leave it off in others.

I sort of belong here. My current uGPA is a 3.215, I have another year left and realistically believe I can raise it to a 3.3/3.4. If I do what I believe I can for the next year, I could probably get my last 60 units to be around a 3.5. My major GPA is another story at a 2.531, which I have no excuse for besides struggling with Organic Chemistry and Biochem and working too much some semesters. I can possibly get it to a 2.74, which involves receiving As in every single major class I take until graduation. Because my last 60 and cumulative GPA are actually good, I'm not sure if I should even mention my Major GPA in my personal statement or not.

Oh I love the dryness. But, sleeping with a humidifier is definitely beneficial and of course lots of water during the day

Honestly, I don't see why you would retake it. Keeping a 170V is much better than raising your Q. You're going into math education, but 164Q after you've been out of school for a while looks great. And from your past GRE, it shows that you have considerably improved already.

Don't be too nervous! as long as you've prepared and studied, it really isn't too bad. I just took it for the second time two days ago, so I'm waiting on my writing score, but I did decently with minimal prep!

Okay, that kind of want I figured. It could deter me form some interviews, but as long as I get an interview, I think I can prove the them I'm worth it

If anyone is coming to UofA and has questions please let me know! I currently live in Tucson and go to undergrad at UofA and I love every minute of it.

Anyone know how large of a factor your GPA is to being accepted, even for just getting an interview? I realize that competitively a 3.5 and up is good, but that's not where I am at. I currently have a cumm. 3.215 and a much lower GPA for my major. If I do well this next year, I could bring my cumm up to around a 3.3 realistically, 3.4/3.5 unrealistically. Major GPA could go up as well, but not enough to matter. I have no real excuse for my low major GPA, just some semesters where I feel I was working too much and my grades suffered for it. I have decent GRE scores. 75-80% Verbal, 51-59% Quant., and 59% AW (I took it twice, but still waiting on my second AW score which I believe will increase) and will have tons of relevant experience by the time I would be accepted. I just don't want something that's so minor in the long run to really cut out my chances of getting in.

Actual #1: 158V 153Q 4W Practice: PowerPrep 1: 152V 151Q (beginning of GRE prep course) PowerPrep 2: 159V 154Q (after GRE prep course and night before actual GRE) Actual #2: 157V 155Q TDB W Practice: CrunchPrep: 155V 155Q Manhattan Prep: 155V 158Q PowerPrep 1: 154V 155Q PowerPrep 2: 158V 153Q (night before actual GRE) Took my first GRE late February after a month long GRE prep class. Took the second today with minimal preparation over about a month. For both, my second PowerPrep practice most accurately showed my Verbal score, where as the averages of the practices most accurately showed my Quant score. Didn't vastly improve my scores, but I have a feeling my Writing score will be much higher and I am pleased that I raised my math a few points.

Hey, I currently go to undergrad at UofA! You'll love it! I promise you get used to the heat extremely fast! If you have questions about the area or even general things about the school, let me know

Is there such thing as contacting the program directors too early? Like if I sent them an email asking about my biochem issue today, that wouldn't been weird or overly enthusiastic?

One thing I've heard of is that you can directly contact the Program Directors and ask where your application was lacking. It's part of their job, so don't be nervous! I attended a "Career Camp" at Utah last month and the Program Director there talked about the admission's process. She did mention that sometimes it isn't about you, but about the other people they accepted that year. You could have been a stellar candidate, but they did not believed you'd click with the other applicants that they were interested in. She also said that someone who applied with basically the same experience would be passed over one year, but the top pick the next based on the interviewers and what they were looking for. A lot of things go into selecting who gets in and who doesn't that is really out of your hands. She said that for reapplicants, they want you to take initiative for the next cycle, go get more experience, take additional classes, show that you still really want this! I think it'd be best to ask the Program Directors for specifics, but you have two areas that you already see you could improve on, so I think starting there would be best! You can never have too much experience!

Thank you! I have my PS started, right around 2 pages currently, with lots of placeholders for things I'd like to include such as my advocacy experience or classes that I am taking in the Fall that will be relevant. I did notice most of the prompts are roughly the same, which has been really helpful when writing. One of the people I am asking for a LOR from is a GC, so I will definitely have her read over my PS to see how I can improve it. Did you have any issues with pre-reqs? I am a little worried because I won't be taking any of my psych pre-reqs until the Spring. Additionally, I am worried about my biochemistry pre-req. My degree only requires one semester of a two semester sequence. I was enrolled in non-required semester of the sequence and ended up withdrawing from the course about halfway through, so I am a bit hesitant to retake it. How does the interviews at UT, UCI, and CSU compare? (I am more interested in UT's as that program is currently tied with UC Denver, Utah, and Arizona (if it stays on track for opening) for my top picks).

Ohh! I am really interested in UT! As I already noted, I am planning on applying to a few other places that you applied to as well. My most prevalent question is when did you first see applications opening up? I am gonna have a pretty busy semester, so I want to get a head start on applications so I'm not waiting until the last minute on them. I'll probably ask you questions about the interview process and etc when that comes closer. Also, what kind of approach did you take for your personal statement? I've start and mine's eh so far. I want to include information about my Patient Advocacy internship, but since it doesn't start until fall, I don't have much to say at the moment.

Hi! Ill be applying for fall 2017. I've taken the GRE, but signed up again to improve my scores. I have a rough draft of my personal statement and a good idea of who I'll ask for my letter of recs. I'm looking into: UC Denver, Utah, CSU Stanilaus, Stanford, UC Irvine, UT Houston, and Arizona (they're in the works of opening a program with Fall 2017 being the first class). This will be my first time applying, I attend the University of Arizona and will have a BS in Moleculae & Cellular Biology when I graduate.

Haven't heard about Indiana State, but I got to the University of Arizona and a GC program is in the works here! I'm friends (she mentors me) with the future Program Director. If everything goes well, it'll be open for Fall 2017 acceptance. There won't be information online until September though. She anticipates accepting 5 students.
