  1. I received a small scholarship this morning as well. I don't think it will influence my decision one way or the other, but I appreciate the gesture.
  2. That's possible. Let's hope they were referring to future awards!
  3. I just got an email from the financial aid office and it's all about federal loans. I fear this means I probably didn't get scholarship funding, but I'll keep waiting.
  4. Did anyone else apply for the Snow fellowship?
  5. They extended the deadline to January 10th.
  6. I got into SIPA, but no funding (or so it appears).
  7. Rejected Good luck to everyone else!
  8. I applied for the MPA as well. I'm counting on a good funding decision, which in SIPA terms basically means I purchased a $95 lottery ticket.
  9. Hey! I've been accepted to both Syracuse and Albany, with funding info to come in the next few weeks. I think we hear back from NYU a week from today and SIPA sometime this month as well.
  10. No one should take out $150,000 for a Master in Public Administration. Full stop. In fact, I would be hesitant about taking out more than $50,000 in total debt. A MPA can lead to a good career, but it's unlikely to lead to great salaries early on. Now that we have a federal hiring freeze, this is doubly true. In the end, this is a public service degree. Don't assume business sector growth potential.
  11. While it's great I've been accepted to great graduate schools, the "real" admissions process for me is the funding decision. It's what will determine whether I actually attend graduate school. I imagine this will be a far more competitive process.
  12. If you don't mind me asking, how did you come up with the 79K number? That sounds too high for Syracuse's program, which is 40 credits. Even with living expenses, that seems like it's on the very high end.
  13. I received my acceptance e-mail today. Formal letter will be arriving soon and financial aid info in late March. Good luck to everyone else!
  14. Same, but I would take a rest today. Chances are nothing is coming on Presidents' Day.
  15. Confirmation that they received the application, and that I made it before the fellowship deadline. I don't think anyone has received acceptances for Fall 2017 yet. That will happen in March (I believe they listed the 10th, no?)
  16. I finished my application in late January (someone took a long time to write a letter of recommendation) so I don't expect to hear back for another few weeks. I hope I didn't apply too late to be considered for financial aid.
  17. Applied: NYU Wagner, Columbia SIPA, Syracuse Maxwell, and SUNY Albany Hopes: I get into at least one school with significant funding. Dreams: That is school is NYU Wagner or Columbia SIPA Guesses: I'll get some funding from each school that accepts me, but who knows.
  18. I wouldn't lose too much sleep over the video, even if you "bombed" it. It's not even the fourth-most important aspect of the application. They won't reject someone they would ordinarily accept because of the video alone.
  19. I would add two points. 1) The federal government is not the only government employer. There are 50 states and hundreds of municipalities. A Master in Public Administration was never a degree to go six-figures into debt for, but it's still worthwhile. 2) I wouldn't be so sure that everyone who would ordinarily go for a government job will seek non-profit work. It's true the degree is most useful there, but there are skills useful in the private sector as well.
  20. @ironheart: That's interesting. How did you go about requesting more funding, if you don't mind me asking? @MaxwellAlum: I can't say for certain that I am competitive for SIPA, but I definitely think I am competitive for Maxwell. There was one fellowship listed on their website that caught my eye and to which I will definitely apply. It was due sometime in mid-February and only requires a resume and a single-age statement of purpose. But I will look for more!
  21. Hi, I've applied to four MPA programs: NYU Wagner, Columbia SIPA, Syracuse Maxwell, and Albany Rockefeller. Apart from Albany I can't imagine being able to afford any one of the first three options without a significant internal scholarship or fellowship (or massive debt, which i wouldn't want to take on for a Master in Public Administration). The good news with NYU and Columbia, I guess, is that I live in New York City with my parents and wouldn't have to pay for housing. I was wondering if anyone knew the chances of getting good funding at NYU, Columbia, and Syracuse? I've heard SIPA tends to give more funding the second year––but do they tell you this in advance, or do you go in cold and hope they offer you something after a year?
  22. I applied on the 15th, but received my confirmation on Friday.
  23. I'm applying to several MA programs in Political Science, including one or two prestigious ones (I didn't do enough research in undergrad and did not feel comfortable applying straight to Ph.D programs.) My GRE score was 161-V; 152-Q: 4.5-W. My undergraduate GPA was a 3.8. I understand the quantitative GRE score is low (indeed, it's the 48th percentile). But considering a high GPA, a good verbal score, and good letters of recommendations, how much will it matter? (I also think my SOP was fine, but this is an MA program, so I'm not sure if that's given much weight)
