  1. @huxlb you will get an offer from one of the schools on your list. Some advice I found valuable is if only one school on your list offered you funding for a phd, would you still attend it? Eliminate schools until the answer is yes. If that shortens your list to CMU and Duke then sure maybe you need a rigorous masters to help you but even that won't be a guarantee. Have you looked into biostatistics at all?
  2. Wow there's that many more math and cs grad students than stats. I feel like a special snowflake now. I'd love to see it broken down by phd and masters though
  3. I am also interested in this. I hear great things about the Montesorri Academy of Chapel Hill and The Learning Experience. I just noticed how close south Durham is so starting to look there.
  4. I received a masters-phd fast track offer to Michigan but not fully funded so quasi-rejected
  5. One or more of your letter writers would also be good to have explain away those B's. I hope that is not your final list of schools but it seems you would get at least a couple offers from those nine schools you just listed.
  6. I have not accepted the admission offer; I did receive funding. Can someone with good grammar tell me if I correctly used that semi colon?
  7. I had a conversation at the beginning of this month and haven't heard back from them either. Biostat314 is in the same boat. The visit day for admitted students is March 16-17 so I'd expect to hear from them by the end of this week.
  8. Buddy of mine got into UCSD biostats PhD (they had a phone interview earlier this month)
  9. Saw a Michigan biostats result today. Is that anyone on here? 165/155 3.79. They really do trickle in one day at a time
  10. * I'm a current applicant to PhD programs and my advice is based on talking to various faculty* If even part of the reason you are pursuing a masters degree is to see if a PhD might be for you then you should do a program that has a thesis component. If coursework looks about the same then the thesis will 1) help you decide if research is what you want to do and 2) let schools know you know what you are getting into and a letter of recommendation from your adviser will be important.
  11. Where you waiting to hear back from? On mobile can't see signatures. University of Nevada has a brand new phd program and the deadline is March 1. In the case where you are actually worried and looking for backup plans. Shoot me a message if you have any questions about the program. As of now they still fund masters students and many of the current phd students started in the masters program. https://www.unr.edu/degrees/statistics-and-data-science/phd
  12. For biostats I would throw Harvard, Hopkins, and Michigan on your list if you like their programs/location at all. As long as your letters are strong (the prof at a top 3 school I'll assume is at UW and a stellar letter from them will go a long way. If you've done 2 summers and published research with them it seems they like the work you do) Is this list made up of bayesian focused programs? If so I'm not much help for the stats programs but you'll get an offer from one of the top 6 biostats programs. What math/stat/computing courses are you in now? Crush those as they will be the last coursework the adcom sees.
  13. What happened to Florida (as in why isn't it a no-brainer that you could succeed there / I don't see a lot of mention on these forums)? Off the top of my head it produced Brian Caffo, Brent Coull, it has or had James Booth and Casella. I always thought of UF as a great school for statistics but maybe I am biased because growing up in Florida the smart kids went to UF for undergrad.
  14. Something relayed to me was that at this point some professors don't know which students are graduating/found their own funding which delays offering funding for the time being. I was told that they are trying to send out funding offers 'relatively soon' and possibly within a week. At the very least they will talk about funding during the visit days.
  15. No. My friend is attending their visit weekend so I will let you know what they say. You applied directly to the masters program, is that correct? Also a big congrats! That was your top choice? @biostat314 A friend of a friend was accepted to the masters fast track (after applying to the PhD) and their application status has not changed which is why I ask Catdog what program he applied to
  16. Been meaning to share this tweet but it's got some great question ideas:
  17. If you like sci-fi and mystery checkout Altered Carbon. It's been a fun watch so far
  18. I should be asking you that question. You have many conference presentations and publications. Based on your profile I'm sure you'll be productive. Do you have any specific research interests? Anything that further demonstrates your drive, ability, interest to pursue a PhD in statistics is what I consider a productive summer. Workshops and research come to mind.
  19. I was waitlisted and I don't have any publications but I do have slightly better grades. A friend of mine got accepted without publications and probably a similar profile to yours. edit: actually no your research experience is much better than mine and my friends the only ding on you is some B's in some key courses. They have huge incoming cohorts and I don't see any reason why someone with a profile like yours shouldn't toss their hat in the ring. A productive summer should make you even more competitive
  20. Definitely keep NCSU on your list!
  21. Well sitting on an acceptance to Harvard should make waiting a little easier
  22. When was your phone call? I was told it would be 2 weeks and the people I've talked to that were accepted had phone calls before the 6th. So I am going to just be patient for another week.
  23. I received admission to Duke masters in biostats (was rejected from their PhD) for anyone curious about Duke biostats. Also a few friends of mine received their PhD rejection
