  1. What programs did you apply to? The slow trickle of admits on the results page is killing me
  2. Looks like Penn interview invites went out. Does this forum seem much quieter than in past years?
  3. I'll try to find it but there was a good summary of the weekend on this forum. It entails meeting with faculty for informal interviews yeah.
  4. I am hearing rumors that Harvard sent out interview invites. Congrats to whoever got one!
  5. Day 35: Morale is still high but anxiety is building with every MBA program spam email. Food and water remain our most valuable assets. I don't know how much longer we can go like this. Please send help.
  6. I heard about Duke at a conference and a faculty member said PhD students have a chance to get paired with the MD students. The medical researchers coming out Duke are amazing so it seems like a great opportunity. I think they only accept four students (PhD) so it's very competitive. As far as Vanderbilt goes - I think interview invites will go out before the end of this month. It's probably my #1 choice but also very competitive! Sig looks great
  7. Yes I irrationally check on the weekends and during the holidays just in case. Cal1gula, I see we have Michigan and Vanderbilt in common so its good to know we can keep each other updated on at least those! Also being colorblind makes reading accepted vs rejected green vs red very difficult!
  8. I have participated in two of these and as far as 'value' it really depends on you. I was craving more than what coursework was giving me so I applied to REUs. The taste of research followed by participating in conferences (as a direct result of the summer program) led me right to biostatistics which I plan to make a career out of. So for me REUs were life changing but a handful of students in my cohorts discovered statistics and/or graduate school was not for them. Most REU websites do a good job explaining what you'll be doing but I'm happy to answer any specific questions you might have. I wouldn't discount SIBS as a first time research experience since you'll have another summer to apply to these programs and if something really grabs your attention you could reach out to faculty at your university. You could check out Wisconsin's Biomedical Data science summer program as well. As you have probably identified, at least a few of these programs are designed to recruit underrepresented students into stats/biostats. It's my personal belief that some program directors aren't looking for the 4.0 applicants from schools with an abundance of research opportunities but are looking for the underdogs with grit and a compelling story so work hard on your personal statements. If you already have an interest in biostatistics, University of Washington has https://www.biostat.washington.edu/suminst which isn't an REU but coupled with a project with faculty at your home university could make for a fun summer. Good luck!
  9. Piggybacking on a previous post I will post the previous three years data on Harvard, UNC, NSU, Duke, Penn, Michigan, Vanderbilt Harvard Biostatistics: 2017: Interview 1/6 , waitlist 2/3, accept 2/3, reject 2/10 2016: interview 1/7, waitlist 2/10, no acceptances, reject 2/10 2015: interview 1/9, waitlist 2/15, accept 2/3, reject 2/18 UNC Biostatistics: 2017: Accept 1/3, no rejects ( ) 2016: Accept 12/28, no rejects 2015: Accept 1/12, no rejects Penn Biostatistics: 2017: interview 12/20, waitlist 2/15, reject 2/21, accept 2/15 2016: interview 1/13, accept 2/25, reject 3/3 2015: interview 1/15, accept 2/13, reject 3/12 Michigan Biostatistics (Including masters here since they do fast-track) 2017: accept 1/16, reject 1/20 2016: accept 1/28, reject 2/17 2015: accept 1/4 (there was a 12/2 admit but lets call that an outlier), reject 1/21 NC State Statistics: 2017: accept 1/15, reject 1/18 2016: accept 12/23, reject 2/8 2015: accept 12/22, reject 1/14 Vanderbilt Biostatistics: 2017: Interview 1/24, accept 2/23, reject 3/20 2016: accept 3/3, reject 3/4 Duke Biostatstics: 2017: Interview 2/7, accept 3/11, waitlist 3/10 2016: Interview 2/8, reject 2/9, accept 3/11 2015: Interview 1/27, reject 3/5, accept 3/10
  10. My friend got into Minnesota biostatistics. Does not use this site though
  11. Although quite a few applications are due tomorrow there are still a handful of schools with deadlines a week or more away. Would anyone applying to PhD programs to statistics or biostatistics feel like swapping statements of purpose for another set of eyes to give feedback
  12. I hope this isn't lazy of me but do you know where I could find a good topic paper or get a taste of what is being done in those fields?
  13. Your list looks solid given your profile. What is your thinking in applying to masters programs?
  14. That's great that you were able to visit. I am out west and my list is basically the east so I am hoping to visit schools if I get any acceptances. I shit the bed on the GRE this past monday with a 165Q/156V but my letter writers letters are in so now it's just months of the waiting game
  15. If those math courses included a good amount of proof based courses, linear algebra, real analysis etc I think you should apply to Harvard and UNC biostatistics PhD. I would think you are a lock for any masters in biostatistics
  16. With your profile you will be in the discussion EVERYWHERE. I can't wait to be the one reviewing applications one day to know for sure but for now I hypothesize there are less than 50 applicants with your kind of profile
  17. This is shaping up to be quite the competitive year. Based on past years results I don't see how you don't get into one of those biostat departments.
  18. Well you are a LOCK for UIC unless they frown upon taking their own undergrads which I know some schools do. Are you sure you can handle all the Packer fans at UWisconsin? I'm a fellow applicant but based on the many profiles I've watched over the years your list looks great. The hard part is how to subset it to 8-10.
  19. I don't think anyone is going to hold that calc1 grade against you. Yeah, apply!
  20. Since you are applying to Boston University maybe you should throw Harvard's Masters program on your list as well!
  21. I was hoping to narrow my research interests by now but they have only grown broader. If there is enough interest in swapping SOPs we could make a slack group. I put the schools I am applying to in my signature but in case it doesn't appear on mobile I am applying to biostatistics programs: Harvard, Hopkins, Penn, UNC, Duke, Michigan, NC State. My list feels risky* so I might drop NC State for more of a safety school somewhere in the east.
  22. I've read that is the case for the US as well but can't remember why.
  23. I think Michigan(masters to PhD track) and UNC- CH accept a decent amount of applicants as well. You look like a strong applicant. Check out the past two years of admissions threads and I think you'll see your list is reasonable.
