Wow! Thank you, all. It’s strangely reassuring to hear that there are others in the same boat (obviously sucks to be in this particular boat, but at least there’s some sense of solidarity). I’m 4 rejections deep, possibly 2 more implied ones, and overall 11 more places to hear back from, but the anxiety is ramping up for sure with each passing day and each new result post.
Sending major good vibes to all of us still without a sure footing, and fingers crossed for us all to end up in a PhD programme after all!

I know I most likely won't hear anything from Emory until the end of the week, but I'm already obsessively overthinking my visit and interviews. I feel like I did well, and I was the only one there with a focus in Irish Studies, so I'm not necessarily competing against anyone else in terms of that, but this entire process is so nerve wracking ?
Currently trying to work on my thesis (final draft is due in a month) and I just cannot concentrate.

Is anyone else trying to finish a master's thesis while waiting to hear back? I thought once my last application was submitted, focus would fill my brain and typing fingers but no! The anticipation is such a distraction.

Just got my itinerary for the Emory visit. I'm nervous but I am also REALLY excited, especially because I'm apparently scheduled for an interview with a history faculty member who co-directs the Center for Digital Scholarship, which means they may want to know more about the research project I'm currently working on here in Charleston. I'm really looking forward to this trip!! This comes as a good boost after the bummer of a rejection from UT ?
Is anyone else on here going?

He told me roughly the same thing when we talked about applying there. Sorry if this is creepy, but we went to the same school. I figured you might have the same thesis advisor as I had for my undergrad thesis. I was also really disappointed by my Austin rejection. Trying to keep my spirits up, though.

If it's any consolation, I had a conversation with my mentor/adviser as soon as I got the chance (the UT Austin alum) and he said that it's always very competitive, even without the increase in applicants. His exact words were "it's a lot harder to get in than when I was there." He said in the many years he's been doing recs for his students he hasn't had a single one get in. Don't know how much he was saying to just try to make me feel a little less down, but just putting it out there in the hopes it might make everyone else feel a little less awful.

I'm really sorry about this. And I know how much it might hurt, especially when one is constantly trying to hope and hold out for good news. And amid everyone receiving different decisions every day it's difficult to remember the impact this can have on your mental health and sense of self and to keep yourself afloat. I went into a horrible downward spiral because of this a couple of weeks ago especially at a time when my mental health wasn't at its best. And the only thing to remember is that the admissions process is not a reaction to you as a person nor to you as a scholar. It feels more like a game of chess than anything else, and filling out the applications is like walking on numerous tight lines at the same time so as to hit all the notes that the committee might be looking for. Just keep your head up, and if you ever need to talk please feel free to message me (this offer is open to anyone who is having trouble through this application cycle, no matter what your decisions might have been, it's okay to feel hurt).

Thank you! I did consider BC in my first application cycle in 2016, but I am trying to avoid taking the subject GRE as much as possible, since I don't do too well with standardized tests. Boston is also reaaaaaally expensive for living, but I might consider it in the future.

Hey just a heads up, I'm the goofball that messed up the UT Austin waitlist notification on the results page. Got a very nice email just now about it from their graduate office about it but my portal still hasn't been updated. Hopefully more emails from them go out today for other people about acceptances/waitlist notifications!

Edit: partner and I both just received interview requests!!!!! We are international so they've requested Skype interviews rather than inviting us to recruitment weekend.

Actually I just checked the decisions board and there's an interview from Notre Dame dated today, so I guess they're out?

I don't believe they have, but in previous years they've sent out interview emails between the 15th and somewhere around the 20th of January. Hang in there!

Emory U invited me to a Skype interview, too! I'm an international applicant as well.
Congratulations to everyone who received good news, and good luck to everyone who's yet to hear! Although Emory is one of my top 3 places, I'm still waiting to hear back from the rest of my schools, it being still quite early in the application season!

Long-time lurker here. Just posting to share that I received an invitation to visit Emory today. I'm thrilled to begin the cycle with this news. Based on past years, does anyone know how many people they invite vs how many get accepted? Also, what are their teaching/service requirements of grad students? Here’s hoping we all get good news soon!

I haven't been on the forum for quite a while since starting my M.A. but I'm back and have applied for this cycle's PhD programs. Luckily, all applications are submitted and I have a lot of faith in my applications for this year, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Got the email for a visit/interview from Emory today so I'm thrilled, since I was outright rejected my very first time applying straight out of undergrad (which, in retrospect, was definitely a reach).
