  1. Thanks @ArcierePrudente ! Layers and investing in a good coat do sound like the way to go. Do you know if they sell tank top thermals? I hate how long-sleeved thermals feel on my arms, haha.
  2. @surprise_quiche I booked it! (and under 400. woohoo!) The problem is that I live in a city with flight curfews due to noise, so it's hard to find something that wouldn't get in super late at night. Managed to find a flight with a good layover time that gets in at 5:10 pm though. Taking a different airline home, but I'm only bringing one carry-on so that shouldn't be an issue.
  3. I'm trying to find a flight under $500 that gets me in before 5pm to Connecticut for their open house. x]
  4. @surprise_quiche I'm born and raised California (basically central) so it doesn't get much colder than this. Meanwhile, I'll probably be moving to a place with real seasons so that's something to look forward to/be anxious about. Speaking of, any tips for looking cute and professional while also staying warm?
  5. @surprise_quiche Congrats on getting that interview! I got notification of a visitation weekend (different school) today and they're also a colder climate (though up to 36 today). Meanwhile, it's 55 in my neck of the woods and my feet are cold, haha.
  6. Thanks @rising_star !
  7. *hugs* @songofgallifrey it's a horrible situation when you do everything right and the schools still can't find your scores. I think a lot of it comes down to overconfidence in their computer software leading to less human oversight and an increase in the assumption that the applicant did something wrong. Hope it works out for you soon!
  8. And there is no shame in it taking a bit longer. I ended up graduating in August instead of Spring because my writing took longer. Now, I was also in classes in the spring, but most of that time was due to edits and rewrites requested by my advisor and committee.
  9. Realistic expectation is to plan out your timeline and, whatever time you put for analyzing and writing, double it. It will (almost always) take longer to do these tasks than you expect so budget in that time now so you don't have to do a change of graduation form further down the line.
  10. Congrats @scientific ! That's awesome! I wouldn't worry too much about the online status yet. They might have to wait for the graduate division to change it, but the department chose to let you know before that happened.
  11. @khigh ah yeah. Unfortunately, pizza is definitely off my list. Carbs are really bad for me due to a chronic condition (thus the trying to take care of my health things now) so I've cut out all processed food and grains so my carbs are only coming from veggies and fruit.
  12. *hugs* @mintless There's only one result there. I get the feeling Wisconsin has the PoIs send the request for interview so who knows?
  13. Who are you talking to @khigh ?
  14. Thanks @Shiji E. Moji !
  15. @sadie508 This will not be the last time you are asked to meet (and not exceed) a specific word count. It sucks, but you have to "kill your darlings" and make sure you are turning in something within the word limit. Read through each sentence. Ask yourself if that sentence is necessary. If it is, is there a way to say what you mean in fewer words? If so, do it. Be harsh on yourself and your writing. Give it to someone else to tear apart if you have to, but get it to the right size. Yes, they read hundreds of essays, but another way to look at it is they have to read hundreds of essays. Do you really want to be the one potentially pissing off adcoms because you wrote a longer paper than they asked for? I know it's probably not what you want to hear, but I hope the above advice helps! <3
  16. @Shiji E. Moji I've actually done things like Blue Apron before (still find the cooking super annoying), but I haven't found any that don't include any grains in their meals. I'm also concerned about making food with other people because I hate to feel like my dietary restrictions are hindering someone else. Once I'm able to fully transition dairy out, I won't even be using butter for cooking. Not sure how many people would be willing to jump on my "no breads/grains, no dairy, only low carb vegetables and fruits, and only lean meat if someone who isn't me prepares it" train. :/
  17. @Shiji E. Moji Thanks for the advice! I've definitely been working on my habits to try and make the transition easier (I'm making exercise a regular part of my routine and, as mentioned above, have been changing my dietary habits to be healthier for my needs). I think the hardest thing that I haven't managed to change yet is my relationship with food. I just don't value eating or cooking. I find cooking draining and boring. My hope is to turn Sunday into a meal prep day so that I don't have to spend time cooking the rest of the week (and largely depend on crockpot meals since I can throw things in and then leave it for hours). If I can consistently get my nutrition needs met, my mental health should be ok (my last real mental health problem was brought on by not eating, not the other way around), though I expect it'll take a hit with all the life transitioning that will be happening. I hope to move to wherever I'm going to school early so I can get acclimated to living alone and the local culture, but I also know I'll have to take a trip home in August to celebrate my niece and my mom's birthdays so who knows how adjusted I'll be by the time school starts. Chances are pretty good that I'll be moving away from the area. I have one friend who really wants me to go to the more local school (she moved 3 hours away for work and if I go to that school we'll be 30 minutes away from each other), but my entire family doesn't want me to consider their location in my decision. My dad actually really wants me to go to UConn so he has an excuse to visit Connecticut (and I have a friend in New York who really wants me on the east coast), but ultimately my family wants me to make the choice that is best for my professional goals.
  18. That interest rate seems awfully high. I don't know anything about Incred Finance, but I would hope there are loans with better interest rates available to you.
  19. @Dan_Xu @mintless I did reach out and ended up talking to the DGS for about an hour and then had an email exchange with another prof, but you never really know. Best of luck to both of you!
  20. @Dan_Xu Yeah, it's definitely a cold place in the winter, haha. I like the people I've spoken to in the program, so I hope I get an interview.
  21. @Dan_Xu If you look through the previous info for Madison, they tend to trickle interview invites out across the entire month and then send out admission notifications in the first half of February. One of my friends who goes to the program got her interview invite on January 25th. I wouldn't say you're out because of one interview invite so far. Which Comm Arts track are you going for?
  22. @Dan_Xu Yeah, Wisconsin-Madison. The person put Comm Arts (Communication Science) as their program. They also listed it as an unofficial interview, but this is about the time they typically start sending out interview invites.
  23. Congrats to whoever got the interview invite at Madison!
  24. This is definitely a huge worry for me. No matter what, I'll be moving to a new place (only 1 app to a school in my state/near family) and I'm terrified I won't be able to take care of myself. Some background, when I was 19 I was living on campus without a meal plan (was supposed to buy my groceries and cook my own food). I averaged less than 100 calories a day because I value other things over cooking and eating. I lost 15-20 lbs in a month, had to drop out of two classes so I wouldn't fail (if you don't eat, you start sleeping all the time), had to move back home (lived close enough I could commute to school instead), had to start therapy after having a major depressive episode brought on by the not eating and all the sleeping, and only attended school half-time the next semester. It was really bad. On top of that, I have some health concerns that have made it so I can't eat any breads/grains, dairy, processed foods, carb-heavy fruits and veggies, or excess sugar. I'm doing pretty well with the diet changes (still transitioning dairy out), but that's because my family is super supportive and my dad's a fabulous cook who makes most of our dinners with diet options that work for me (ex. they might make something with rice, but keep the rice separate so I can eat the main part of the dish). I've got my hands on a crockpot and my dad's cioppino recipe (and I'm working on more meal ideas that can be prepped once a week), but I'm still nervous about it. I'd really hate to move far away from family and end up dropping out of school because I couldn't take care of myself as someone in their twenties. On top of this, I really hate cooking meat (even more than my hatred of cooking in general) so I expect I'll be getting a lot of my protein through cioppino and eggs.
