@montanem beautifully put! I absolutely agree. @DBear...are you in forum jail for liking things? I didn't realize that was a thing. -
Directing MFA 2017 - Who's with me?!

I'm afraid I'm no help with CMU, New School, or Boston. But I do recall from last year's thread that Boston and New School provided information much later in the game than other programs. -
Directing MFA 2017 - Who's with me?!
GunningForGrad replied to KillerWingfield's topic in Performing
Heard from Tracee at DePaul this morning. We should be getting a schedule and detailed information soon! Also, looking through the results page for UCSD it looks like in past years, interview requests were seen out around Feb. 7-11. Not sure if that may be pushed back due to the later deadline or not. Definitely looks like we should start being on the last lookout for contact in the mid-February time. How did URTA go for everyone else? Anxious to hear about it! -
I know that I personally spend a lot of time worrying that if I get accepted somewhere, something will fall through. Maybe I won't get the funding or loans I need to afford the program. Maybe I won't be able to find housing near the school. Maybe I'll get an email saying the acceptance was all a mistake. I think there will always be something to fear and give you second thoughts right up to actually moving, starting your program, and settling in.

I don't even know how I would respond to an admissions decision without an interview. Granted, my area of focus is super interview heavy. It's sort of a three stage process. Submit application, if your application is deemed worthy then you pass onto the second stage: the first interview. Then depending on how the first interview goes we may make it to the final callback interview where we have to prove our directing skills and really have our experience dissected and get to meet current students. And only then do we get to anxiously wait around for an admissions offer. It's a lot more ups and downs along the way but at least I'm clued in to know if I'm at least considered a candidate.

I agree with this! Certainly support international grad students and everyone on this forum. Hoping things turn around for the better soon. -
I don't think daydreaming and sending positive thoughts out into the world for what you want is a waste of time.

@angesradieux, if your sister is behaving like that now then it probably won't change when you move. Although my relationship with my sister improved immensely when we lived in different states. Sort of that "you don't appreciate what you have until it's gone". My dad won't care if I get into grad school. In many ways, he'll think it's stupid. Embrace the positive relationships you have in your life. Those will be the ones that carry you far. You're going to love grad school and the growth you get from it.

Directing MFA 2017 - Who's with me?!

So here's a question. I don't think any of us are international applicants (correct me if I'm wrong!) but we are going to be spending quite a bit of time in airports over the next few weeks for interviews. How are you feeling about Trump's ban, the stay, and DPH's decision to ignore the stay? Are you concerned this could also affect domestic flights with protests and increased security? -
I think you've stumbled onto why we're all on this forum. We're desperately trying not to go crazy during the wait! So back when I was young and naive, I applied for grad school straight out of undergrad. I didn't realize initially that it would be a lost cause because my program looks for real world experience and I just wouldn't fit that bill. Much like you, I thought my life would be shot if I didn't get in somewhere. But that's not the case! Start thinking about the worst case scenario where you don't get in somewhere. Think about what you can do instead to gain more experience and live your life before diving back in and trying again. The last several years have been richly rewarding for me in my pursuit of my profession. It's crazy to think how I once thought a rejection from grad school would ruin my life. Everything happens for a reason! I hope you get in, but if you don't it means you're meant to do something else for a little while before applying again and getting that coveted acceptance!
-
Nope! Pretty sure that's totally normal. It's part of the research aspect and gives you something to focus on while you're waiting!
-
Hi @angesradieux. First and foremost, what you are feeling is TOTALLY normal. That said, I don't think you should let it derail your dreams. Moving is hard. I am practically a professional now- I've moved about sixteen times in my life- and it will always be difficult. You will have days where it seems impossibly difficult, days where you will be homesick. But I can tell you wholeheartedly that I have never once regretted a move. You will be missed. People will care that you're gone. Some relationships will change- some may even fizzle out. It's the nature of the human condition. But you can't let that keep you from pursuing your passions. Rose colored glasses allow us to romanticize our current lives. But I assure you- your family isn't going anywhere and visiting will be amazing! And you will have an opportunity to form new connections. I'm happy to try to help any questions you have but I certainly don't think you're weird for being scared or having second thoughts. It sounds like going to school is the right decision for you. Bravery isn't the absence of fear but acting in spite of it.

@Boseph16 That's awesome! Sorry UCLA was such a dud. But glad to hear about Iowa and ASU. I think UCSD will be quiet for a couple more weeks since the deadline was so late. Won't be surprised if it takes until mid-February to hear something. -

Hahaha...the designer of the new superhero costumes for the Incredibles is adamant about not including capes because capes are a safety hazard and usually end up being the downfall. Spoiler alert: the villain of the movie wears a cape. -

Hahahaha well to be fair right now I'm at a standing point. I have interviews the next three weekends and I won't hear anything about acceptances until after I see how those go. If two of them go well, then I would have to attend a callback weekend. So things are happening! But acceptance notices are a long way off for me. The only thing I can be anxious about right now is 1. Hearing from my fourth and final school in hopes I get an interview and 2. Hoping I don't royally screw up my interviews. Plus I think it's good juju to support the community as a whole! A success for one is a success for all! Haha I think the grad school gods may run along the lines of Greek gods where there is a different one for various departments and focuses! A first born isn't in my future so I wouldn't want the gods to think I'm tricking them with an empty promise. And my area of focus actually doesn't even require the GRE which is great news. I may just stock up on my sacrifices to my tried and true god, Dionysus (the god of theatre and wine). Those sacrifices usually involve killing a bottle or two of wine in a night- easy to do when you're waiting to find out your future! -

Seeing all of these acceptances makes me so happy. I hope the grad school gods shine on me- I'm just never sure if hundreds of dollars in application fees, the tears of my soul, and a GRE test prep book burned at the altar is enough of a sacrifice... -

Loving that we're in interview season! It feels like I have something to actively work on again instead of just sitting around waiting. Break legs at URTA guys! -

I wish! I'll be there next weekend. Let us know how the show is and how your interviews go! Have you already mentioned who you're interviewing with at URTA, @Boseph16? -
Hey! Not a dramaturgy applicant, but I know someone who is. They haven't heard anything from Yale just yet. Looking in previous threads and results, looks like things will start moving for your program in early February. Keeping my fingers crossed for you @egh89!

YES. Absolutely. Who needs grad school when you can get a PhD in kicking butt? -

No capes! Did The Incredibles teach you nothing? -

It also means they saw value in your application. They wouldn't forward it to biochemistry if they didn't think you were a strong candidate!

@Charlsa that is the worst! I think I'll just ignore my mailbox when I get closer to admissions decisions times. (Hahahahaha yeah right, like I'll actually be able to do that....) @Marshall I am so sorry to hear that! I hope all goes smoothly this time around and that you get an answer sooner rather than later!
