  1. Yeah this means we got in Congrats! We just need to have everything approved by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs after he submits funding packages. Yeah I am still pretty sold on Munk's MGA as my number 1 if I get in (we might hear back tomorrow), but am worried about the costs of U of T and living in Toronto. I only applied to Carleton and U of T. Also, when I met with Carleton it sounded like they offer very generous funding packages in their MPPA program so that would complicate things as well (but in a great way haha). I am going to be a nervous wreck tomorrow waiting for an email from Munk!
  2. Yeah that makes sense! Good luck at Queens and congrats again
  3. Just an update for all of the MPPA at Carleton people. I got this email today from the graduate advisor: "The admissions committee has reviewed all the files. I will be submitting the proposed funding offers to Grad studies this week. Offers should begin to be sent out next week.I WILL be recommending your admission." So we should start seeing changes in Carleton Central to "Review in Progress by Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs"
  4. I got exactly the same email from the admissions coordinator as well haha! I'm sooo happy that I got in somewhere, but I also really want to see what the funding package is like. What are your thoughts on Carleton's MPPA vs U of T for the MGA or MPP?
  5. Congrats on your acceptance! Do you think you will be accepting? Or waiting for U of T?
  6. Good luck on the week ahead everyone! I hope we get some offers in! Carleton is supposed to decide on their MPPA program by the end of February with offers in the few days following (fingers crossed). So maybe all of you NPSIA folks will start hearing as well Starting to get really nervous over here haha.
  7. Hey everyone! Just wanted to update you that my MPPA application to Carleton is "Recommended for Assessment," so it looks like they are moving along over there. Additionally, I heard from the SPPG @ U of T that they received 650 applications this year and are 2-3 weeks away from making 1st round offers.
  8. Congrats on the change! its starting to move along! Also, I believe the MPP program usually gets roughly the same as the Munk School, so 350-500 ( I would assume the Munk School got a similar 650 this year). This looks like its a significant uptick. Kind of makes me worry as the larger the pool, the harder it is to get in :/ Then again, I'm assuming a fair amount of the people applying might only have decided to go this route this year, if it is partially due to Trump, and thus may not have the same background and CV, but even then this still isn't a great sign.
  9. I was wondering if anyone knows how many applications were submitted to the Munk School this year? It looks like the MPP program at U of T got 650 this year for 80 spots (and is 3 weeks out from issuing offers), and from all of the figures regarding NPSIA and GSPIA it looks like there was a similar influx of applications. Probably because of Trump? But as such, I wonder if we will actually get letters this upcoming week? I know last year Munk offered March 1st, but if they had a similar uptick, its probably closer to 2-3 weeks?
  10. My application to the MPPA program at Carleton has been moved to "recommended for assessment."
  11. Im in my fourth year and finishing my degree with an honours in Political Science and minor in IR from Mount Allison. I have been very lucky to have had some amazing summer opportunities to work in government so I do not feel like a year off would give me a significant difference regarding where I want to end up (especially since I am already in love with Intergovernmental Relations).
  12. Also, my MPPA application to Carleton still shows "Preliminary Review Required".... I had all of my documents in (including references) on January 28th? Is anyone else still in the same boat?
  13. Congratulations @Nupur11!!! Regarding your decision, just know that the Munk school does not usually give out a lot of funding and I do not know if you got any from George Washington University but its just something to keep in mind. If you have any other questions though feel free to ask! I dont know how helpful we can be but I'm sure we will all try our best haha.
  14. You applied to one more than me! I only did 3. My professor recommended atleast two, and I am sure that you will be accepted into one of those if you have a good application. Also, remember that 1st round admissions are not everything (even though it feels that way) and people will keep receiving admissions offers until every spot is full. We are all in the same boat regarding nerves and anxiety, but I dont think you need to apply to more schools. However, if you did want to, MAGG and MIPP applications at Balsillie have been extended until March 1st. I have considered applying to these programs, however it just is not worth it, in my opinion, to make an application due to fears of not getting accepted. You chose those programs for a reason and most likely because you felt as though they would be a good fit, they will most likely see you in the same light.
  15. So I got some information regarding the MPPA program at Carleton that might be useful for people. It looks like the decisions should be made at the end of this month, with offers following shortly thereafter
  16. @Nupur11 Thats good! You should be in the clear then regarding assessment. My application was moved to "under review" but there is nothing aside from that. They sent out 1st round offers on March 1st last year. From what I can tell the MGA has one specialization through a joint program in Asia-Pacific studies (however I believe you must apply to both departments in order to be accepted into the Asia-Pacific stream). The Munk School also does offer a Master of Arts in European and Russian Affairs. I met with them last semester when I was doing a little scouting trip to find schools to apply to and they did mention that they have capstone courses where you work with an organization (with some students working with development banks), in order to provide consultancy services. It appears as though most of their graduates find placements in the private sector and there are some job placement services. Also, Munk is one of the members of APSIA (Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs) of which Harvard, Yale, Columbia, John Hopkins and NPSIA are a part of. Regarding job placements, I do not expect to have great difficulties finding a job out of the Munk school (if I get in), but then again I am looking at it from an outside perspective.
  17. I would imagine that they will not make judgements until after all applications have at least been looked at (which were complete before the deadline), aside from exceptional applicants (aka the two people who received offers in February). If you submitted everything before the deadline I don't think you have anything to worry about. The pool of applicants needs to be established before decisions can be made, and it would be hard for the committee to start making judgements before baselines are established for the current year.
  18. Last year Munk 1st round offers were made on March 1st. GSPIA was in the second half of March I believe? Other programs are all over the place but 1st round offers should be received during March from what I can gather. After that 2nd round offers will be in April and so on and so forth. Most law schools have much earlier deadlines than us (which probably accounts for the difference in hearing back) but it is still very nerve racking.
  19. Those are very good points! A car and single accommodations do eat up a budget. Plus there are lots of places downtown that are cheep and very nice as there is a lot of student housing for Saint Mary's and Dal (my friend is paying 425+utilities for her half of rent there). But if you live outside of downtown, or your department is not located there and in Bedford for example you can have issues. Thats not to say that its not worth it though, but that you really need to consider moving to the Maritimes for positions unless you have taken everything into account. Plus income tax is much higher in Nova Scotia (and the Maritimes as a whole), 8.79% for the first 29k and 14.95% on the next 29k compared to 5.05% for the first 42k in Ontario (plus you need to add the 15% for Canada's base income tax rate).
  20. Halifax is definitely fantastic! However, one issue with NS government jobs is their pay scales and the current scenario surrounding job cuts. I know that the cost of living is lower in the Maritimes (I am currently studying here), but 1800-2500 bi weekly before taxes (which is what most entry level positions in the NS government pay) does not leave a lot of wiggle room once you count for repaying student loans and all of your living expenses. Additionally, from what I have heard the upwards opportunities in NS are somewhat limited in the public service (but then again that is just from word of mouth). Dalhousie has a great campus though!
  21. I am applying to Carleton's MPPA (as well as the Munk School for the MGA and the School of Public Policy and Governance for a MPP). The reason I chose a MPPA/MPP is that it gives you a much wider breadth of options for Canadian public policy from what people have told me and does not exclude you from foreign affairs. A MGA (or similar international affairs oriented degree) is very specific and hard to utilize in a Canadian setting aside from the Dept. of Global Affairs or a international intergovernmental position in one of the provinces or territories (but those are few and far between with most positions multitasking from my experience in intergovernmental affairs). I guess you could also use it in the private sector but again it is more specialized (not necessarily a bad thing) but for me I would rather have a wider breadth of opportunity and the MPP does not really limit your ability to apply for positions in the Dept. of Global Affairs from what my deputy minister told me during my internship this summer. Other people may see it differently but thats just my personal viewpoint on the issue My rankings for schools are 1) MPP @ SPPG, 2) MGA @ Munk, and 3) MPPA @ Carleton.
  22. I would give it a shot! They may say no but then again they may not! There is no harm in asking (in my opinion)?
  23. I would talk to the administrator and see if you are allowed? But I wouldn't push it too far? If I was a betting person though I would say it is definitely more likely that they will miss the error than catch it.
  24. Was in in the actual letter or just the file name? If the deadline has passed, personally I wouldn't. They would most likely skip it just like with the earlier letter someone had. They will be reading hundreds of these and they would probably be very used to the acronym from being in the program as well. However, if you do feel like you want to revise I would probably talk to the administrator as you wouldn't want to raise the mistake to the attention of the admissions committee.
