No need; I was just rejected.
-
I am THIS close to calling Columbia and asking what's up. It's driving me crazy!
-
Are you all counting Columbia as an implied rejection yet?
-
Hey, UCLA has 10 people on the waitlist! They didn't give me details about what the concentrations were, but yeah. FYI. 20th centurty people, help me out. Please.

I need that Columbia poster to add details! Eek!

Reactions to PhD Study
la_mod replied to orphic_mel528's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Most of my friends / family don't really get it, but as soon as I mention the funding they very visibly perk up in a way that's almost a little off-putting. It's a silly thing to complain about, and I'm really not complaining (because I feel very lucky to have few reactions so rude as yours, Mel), but geez, do other people not pursue things simply because they care about them? I think I also might be coming from a different POV though. I'm a first generation college student graduating a year early. So I'm 20, and I don't think that most of my friends / family are really taking this seriously, and most of them don't have any interest in academia at all. I think that most of them view it as a way to postpone the real world too. The most frustrating question I get is usually about my personal life, and how I'm ever going to "meet a nice boy and have babies" if I'm in school for 6+ more years (and I'm 20!). So @imogenshakes, I feel your pain too. Oi. -
Yes! I posted earlier that Columbia is my LAST shot, so this feels really awful.
-
I mean, yeah. I'm just as bothered by the fact that I have zero idea whether or not decisions for Columbia have been released at all. Ugh.
-
SO cruel. Agreed. And was this person waitlisted for real? Gosh, I'm such a ball of nerves. It's awful for someone to know, to READ that we're all so nervous and then purposefully toy with that. Not cool.
-
Ahhh, I wish I knew about Columbia; it's my last chance to get into a funded/ PhD program! (I may have looked up one of my POIs to see when class was so I could justify them not having called: "on leave Spring 2017"-- oi)
-
Oof, not a good sign when the last school to not hit you with an implied rejection is an ivy. Guess I'll go for my MA (and hopefully I'll get into that one MA program)? I hate this "implied rejection" thing. Feeling pretty crummy in general about this whole process.... ugh

I'm not sure about NYU. For Columbia, I've read that either the acceptances will be released tomorrow OR the AdCom is meeting tomorrow to finalize. When I interviewed, they just said that it'd be "late February." Anyone else heard anything?
-
Oh, I didn't realize the AdCom hadn't met yet; that's great! Nerve-wracking, but at least now I can pretend like I still have a shot, ha.

Ok so here's my scenario: Waitlisted at UCLA, rejected from most others, waiting to hear from a few (for English PhD). I currently work on campus in the library, but I just got a second job as a "Writing Fellow." Basically, I tutor my fellow undergraduate students in writing. Should I send an updated CV? I feel like it sends the message that I'm still interested and have been working hard, but I'm worried it comes off as desperate because it's SO late in the season. Also, how would you go about notifying schools about the update? Thank you for reading / weighing in!!! EDIT: two of the schools I'm waiting on have already sent out some admissions, and one will hopefully be this Friday. The latter I had an interview with, and could possibly frame it as a follow-up? I don't even know.
-
Do you know if this is for all English programs, or just MA? Regardless, exciting stuff!
-
Ah, me too. MA or PhD? Maybe I'll see you there (*crosses fingers for the both of us*)

GRE Prep - best materials? :)
la_mod replied to personalhelicon's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I spent all my time studying for the Lit Subject test (and still did terrible), so I only really crammed for the GRE Gen the week before. All I'd recommend is vocab. The rest is mostly English-related anyway (like identifying theme and stuff), but the vocab was really the bulk of my test. If you're worried about math like I was, I'd suggest doing a prep book. I ended up with 167V/160Q/4.5W and was shocked! All in the vocab -
I must have been on the wrong page, but I could have sworn there were at least four or five acceptances, and now I'm seeing two... oh well
-
Am I crazy, or WERE there some up earlier that are since gone????
-
Does anyone know why those Penn acceptances are missing on the results board?
-
I'm hoping to get into the one MA I applied to at the very least, but if not I'm thinking substitute teaching and applying again (and expanding into less prestigious schools and Law programs...)
-
you joke, but 1. i love sufjan and have been listening to him almost exclusively in these trying times (lol) 2. thinking about an implied michigan rejection while driving when suddenly "say yes! to michigan!" is a real kick in the chest

Time Management Tips!
la_mod replied to A blighted one's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I use a bullet journal! It's the only way I can map out exactly how much reading I have each week. I'm only in undergrad currently, but have two jobs and am the pres of two student orgs, and bullet journaling has changed my life.
