So for non-fellowship people at Ohio, I was given 5 dates to choose from and was told they do 6 applicants in the morning and 6 applicants in the afternoon on each of the days, so that's 60 students they're interviewing. It sounded like some of the slots were already filled, the day I chose she said there were only slots open in the morning. Not sure how many people they already contacted.

I'm not a male, but there were a decent number of males at the prospective student seminar at Symposium in September. More than I expected at least!

No need to be sorry -- that's what this forum is for! In my experience, people say the exact number of shadowing hours is not important, but what you take out of the experience is the important part. Shadow enough to be able to have an understanding and to be able to write about your experience. Currently they say ~33% of all applicants are accepted each year. As for pre-reqs, whether they expire or not is up to each school. I know a lot of Canadian schools say pre-reqs must be taken within 5 years. A lot of other schools say courses like genetics should be "recent". If you're not sure, it's always good to email or call a program -- they are typically very responsive and helpful!

I didn't have my application in until like Dec 6th or something so I don't think so. If they want to still consider me for the fellowship though I'd be more than happy!

Has anyone been in contact with UC Irvine lately? I already sent them an email saying that my electronic transcripts haven't been downloaded yet (I get a notification when they are) and they expire in so many days but they still haven't been downloaded and I never got a response... I don't want to be annoying and send another email reminder, but the deadline is coming up....

I think it's interesting that they're limiting it to 3 schools per review period. I suppose if they want the process to go as quickly as possible they can only review so many schools at a time though. @freckledgenes If you don't count the schools that have already submitted applications for new programs, there are spots for 6 schools to potentially open by next year's match.

As far as I know, for a majority of the schools it doesn't matter how early you turn in your applications. For some schools it might make a difference depending on how interested in you they are, because some schools with late due dates will offer interviews on a rolling basis before their due date comes around (i.e., Augustana last year). I'm sure they keep a "maybe" pile to review after their due date comes around and all their applications have been seen to then decide if they want to interview those ones. I imagine this is also what Ohio State does with the people who applied for the Dec 1st date - if they didn't offer interview last week, they probably put the remaining apps in a "review again after real due date" pile. Other schools simply have a set date(s) when they will notify students they would like to interview and when you hear isn't going to change whether you submitted your app 1 month or 1 minute early.

Breathing a big sigh of relief as the program said they received the LOR today and it's all good. Whew! I really didn't want my app to be thrown out just because my LOR came in two days late.

One of my recommenders submitted her letter for all but 3 of my schools and I sent her like 3 email reminders over the last week and a half but she didn't submit for one of my schools that was due last night so I'm def stressing about that. She was out of the office all this last week and I'm hoping the school will give a little bit of leeway since New Years is considered a holiday for most places so maybe they'll be okay if she submits it tomorrow when she is back in the office... crossing my fingers and probably simultaneously growing a stress ulcer.

A lot of programs moved their application deadlines up this year, so I'm hoping that means they notify us of interviews/rejections earlier too.

@hfj23 I believe they told students at interviews last year that was how many they interview. Someone made a spreadsheet last year with all the schools and how many they accept/interview based on what we learned while at interviews or what their website says. I'm also in the pool of "my application is complete even though buckeyelink says otherwise". I submitted my transcripts over a month ago as well and got the notification when they downloaded them so I know they have them but my application status said they were missing when I checked today so I just emailed them.

Happy Dec 15 to those applying to programs with due dates today! 5 apps down for me, still a good handful to go. My bank account is starting to feel it -- thank goodness for extra hours at work! And shout out to those of you who had all your applications submitted like, last month lol. I salute you! I'll just keep telling myself that the later I wait to submit my applications, the less time I will have to stress until I hear back from the schools haha. Good luck everyone, and here's to staying motivated and sane!

I think it sounds like you have a great application! Honestly I don't think research is a huge concern for too many schools. There are some that are definitely more into it than others, but I wouldn't worry about not having too much research experience. Otherwise it sounds like you've checked all the boxes for everything else! I would say you have a pretty good shot of at least interviewing.

I had a few questions I emailed back and forth a few times with the IU director about today so I can't say I've had any issues contacting her! I finally submitted my IU app today around noon. 3 down and many more to go!

The bios are definitely daunting, but at the same time some of them I feel like I've done just as many if not more of the same things they have so I'm really crossing my fingers for this year. I also keep self-doubting that I've picked the right schools to apply to and enough of them.. This weekend I decided to apply to two more because I'm so anxious about trying to increase my odds of getting interviews

@AspiringGC I've had that issue too! It's the only document I haven't been able to upload and I kept getting the same error message as well. I was trying last week and thought maybe the application server was just having issues or something and haven't tried it again yet. But since you're having troubles too still, maybe it's something they don't know isn't working.

I thought of a few other things to consider as well.. Last year in interviews and application feedback (and according to many school's FAQ sections) it sounded like almost all the schools received at least 100 applications, so if you take a minimum of 100 apps per school (41 schools this year), that's at least 4,100 applications. And I would consider that a conservative estimate, in reality I would believe it's higher. Obviously those aren't all unique applicants, but it's quite a jump from the 2,712 applications in 2010. I don't know what that would translate to in terms of unique applicants, but it gives a little perspective on how much interest in the career has jumped in the past 7 years. In 2010, students were applying to 4 schools on average. I can't say for sure, but I think that number is probably closer to 5 or 6 now, which could be a contributing factor to the increased number in applications overall. If my numbers are correct based on each program's number of admitted students, there are ~366 slots for this cycle (assuming Baylor and Arizona will be certified in time). The increase in available slots along with the increase in interest and applications may work out to be a similar percentage of admitted students as there was in 2010 (if we estimate 1,000 unique applicants, it works out to be ~36% acceptance), but that's based off speculation and who really knows. On a more optimistic note, I have also heard programs say that they typically toss out anywhere from 10-15% of their applications right away. Some of reasons why they get tossed right away are that they have statements addressed to the wrong school, much too low of a GPA (like a 2.0), statements addressed to or written about medical schools, missing information or parts of the application, no genetic counseling and advocacy experience at all, or it's just obvious from the personal statement that the applicant doesn't know what genetic counseling is. Maybe in the next few years they will come out with some new data since the field and interest has been growing so much.

At the last two open houses/program informational meetings I was at I think I heard it's usually around 35% acceptance. But I don't know if that is for unique applicants or for all applications submitted.

I think that depends on the program. I know a few that specifically state they will take your best scores across multiple GRE's, but I don't know if all do that. Would be a good question to email a program and ask.

I am also a second round applicant, I can tell you a little about my experience. Last year I applied to 3 schools and interviewed at one. The two schools I did not receive interviews at both said I needed a B or better in Biochem because it was a pre req (I had a C). They also said I should have a more "traditional" advocacy experience, like crisis counseling. I graduated in 2016 and have been working full time since. Since applying last year I have retaken biochem and have been volunteering for a crisis line since July. This time I am applying to 10 schools. As for stats, my overall GPA is 3.24 and my GRE percentiles are 79, 60, and 56, which the 3 schools I applied to last year said were all fine. You mentioned you were also taking statistics. If that is this semester, that's fine, but if you aren't taking it until spring along with your second biochem, I would look closely at schools' requirements. Most schools will only allow you to have one pre req class "in progress" during spring semester. Also, if there were extenuating circumstances that contributed to your F/D in biochem, that would definitely be something to mention on your personal statement and may still put you under consideration if your other pre req grades are good.

I'm having a similar issue writing my statement for Baylor - they also have a limit of 750 words. How do I get everything I want to get across in 750 words!? I have so much to say! My other ones are easily 1200-1500 words.

@hopetobeGC To my understanding, yes you need official from all schools attended. You could maybe ask if unofficial transcripts are okay for the older schools/schools you didn't graduate from, but as far as I know, no loophole. I feel your pain, I have 2 schools to send transcripts from for 10 applications. I'm just glad that not all of them require official transcripts.
