  1. Wow, that is a really cool interactive map!!
  2. @GCBrittany I volunteered at the Mexican Embassy in my state, advocating for and helping immigrants write resumes, find jobs, apply to local colleges/certificate programs, and I taught ESL. I also volunteered for an organization called Camp Kesem, which offers a free week of camp to kids who have/had a parent with cancer. Some schools were interested in my Camp Kesem experience, but nobody really asked about my embassy experience. And when I asked what I could do to improve my application for the next cycle, schools told me to get involved in a more "traditional" advocacy experience, aka crisis line, sexual assault advocate, planned parenthood, etc. That's just my experience though, other people could have a different response to their types of advocacy. To find schools that offer scholarships, assistantships, etc, you will probably have to look at the school websites individually (unless someone else has taken the time to comprise that kind of list!). For the match fee, it is my understanding that it is a ONE time extra fee, not per school. And from what I understand, you have to apply through the schools individually, and then select within the match which schools you are applying to. Interviews are typically anytime from Jan-March, occasionally there are some in April but all the schools seem to be moving up their deadlines this year so I would doubt that there will be many interviews in April this year. @skburz The authors of that google doc took it down partway through the application cycle last year. I had access to it but then noticed it wasn't in my drive one day so I emailed to get access again and they said that there was a lot of changing information and they didn't want to give out misinformation so they deleted it. They were hoping to find a better way to share comprehensive information from all the schools but so far I have not heard of a new way they are doing that.
  3. Is anyone else going to the NSGC prospective students symposium in Columbus, OH in September? I just registered!
  4. Technically, all the programs have to be "good" for prenatal, pediatric, and cancer because those are the three areas students have to be trained in per the ASGC/certifying board. But like @JN212 said, depending on what hospital(s) they run out of or do a lot of their rotations in, that can effect where they tend to concentrate more of their focus/where you will get more experience.
  5. Two more program updates.. Arizona is on track to accept applicants this cycle for admission Fall 2018. They expect to have their website/application info up by the end of the summer. I forgot to mention in my comment above, but Baylor said they were hoping to have their website up by the end of this week. Columbia is "not certain" that they will have both state and board approval in time for admission for fall 2018. It sounded like they were hopeful and would really like to take admissions this year, but that all depends on how long it takes to get their approval. I'm kind of surprised they are not more confident they will open this next fall considering they were the first of the 5 schools to submit their letter of intent (back in January!), but then again I don't know anything about program certification... One of the programs did mention that it takes a minimum of 11 months to get certification.
  6. Update for all on a couple of the new programs... MGH Institute of Health Professions doesn't plan on accepting applications until next cycle (fall 2018) for admission Fall 2019. Baylor will be taking admissions this cycle and will be admitting 8 students. They are submitting their application for Recognized New Program status by the end of the month.
  7. @JN212 agreed! I've already started my NC app... I'm antsy I noticed a lot of programs are moving their deadlines up. Some of them haven't updated their websites yet but just from contacting the programs myself they told me they were going to have an earlier deadline this year. I wish more would open their applications earlier so I could spread out the costs of sending my transcripts/GRE's/app fees over more time instead of dropping it all basically at once.
  8. @gc2017 Is it a grad level course or undergrad level?
  9. Location, when rotations start, and cost are my three main factors. If you want more information about a program you can always email the director or whatever contact info they list on their website. And as for not knowing what a city is like to live in, you can google cost of living/housing/etc, and if you think you could potentially see yourself living there then you can ask more about it at the interview if you receive one. You usually have time to speak with the current students and you can ask them all of that kind of information.
  10. Not sure if anyone else has noticed but Baylor submitted a letter of intent a few days ago!! Hooray for another program being added!! On a similar note, does anyone know when any of the programs with letters of intent out there plan to go live? I would like to look into them but none of them have any information on their websites...
  11. @AspiringGC I also heard back from Augustana 3-4 weeks after I sent an email.
  12. Is this some agreed upon national day for exploring genetic counseling programs? I know of at least 2-3 other programs who have their open house on Aug 11 as well.
  13. Thanks! That is pretty cheap compared to classes at my university! I'm paying over $1200 just to re-take Biochem this fall Do you register for the MEDS 4021 clinical embryology or the GC7050 embryology course? It says they're combined into one section, but I'm not sure if it makes a difference which one you sign up for..
  14. I, too, joined CTL! I start in July. I was kind of surprised that the next earliest training was two months out (I was accepted a few weeks ago). I'm on the fence about whether or not to take the GRE again. I have a lower-ish GPA (3.2) and my verbal/writing were average and my quantitative was way above average, but I thought maybe it would help boost my app if I got a higher score to offset my GPA.. One school said my GRE scores were fine when I asked them what I could do to improve, but that's also just one school's opinion.. If they're pre-req type classes or classes related to counseling/genetics, I think taking them at a CC is fine. My state has what's called PSEO, which allows qualified high schoolers to take classes at a college (for free!) instead of going to class at their high school so I did that for my senior year of high school at a CC and that's where I have a couple of my pre-reqs from (psych, calc, bio..) and none of the schools I applied to said anything about it. I think they also understand that it's definitely cheaper for us. Does anyone know how much that UC embryology online course costs?
  15. Does anyone know how much UC Irivne's program costs? They don't have a lot of info on their website.
  16. @Marie764 Minnesota and Wisconsin. A lot of programs don't list Ochem as one of their pre-reqs, and I've rarely seen Ochem2 listed at all so I think you would be okay applying anywhere without worrying about it.
  17. @hb_94 There are a combination of factors that determine if that grade will hinder you or not. Is that your only C? If it is and you have A's in all the other "important" classes then it might not matter so much. But that also varies per program. I had two programs straight up tell me that they require a B or better in biochem (and their other pre-req courses).
  18. Wow, that would be a bummer if you had to retake all the pre-reqs. That's pretty much an entire semester you would have to redo! I've never really looked into the Canadian programs but if I was reaching that 5th year post-grad or more, it would definitely be a turn-off for me.
  19. I am also curious as to why you need to update some of your courses... there are people who apply to programs as a later in life career change and they don't have to retake any courses as long as the pre-req's were covered in their undergrad/graduate degree.
  20. @bryvy Grade-wise, a 3.3 GPA is fine as long as you do decent on your GRE's. There was someone posting for the 2017 cycle who had a 2.8 that I think was accepted to a program. Or at the very least I know they had interviews. Your shadowing and advocacy experiences tend to weigh more. On the other hand, though, it depends on which classes you got the C's in. If you got a C in what they consider to be a core class (genetics, psych, biochem..), you may want to re-take or take a second one. That's what hindered me this last year from getting more than one interview. The programs I contacted said my biochem grade was too low. If you got C's in other less important classes like gen-ed's or random electives (virology, zoology, plant bio..), I don't think they really care about that.
  21. @kbash I did the same and got the same response from her too. Not too hopeful but figured it couldn't hurt to try. The email from the CSUS director said ISU would probably only look at applicants with "high GPA's", so I might be ruled out from that. I had a 3.6 at a college I attended for one year, and then a 3.2 from the college I graduated from... if you straight average and say 3.4, I don't think that's really considered a "high" GPA...
  22. Got the email about the second chance match, bummer that it's only one school.
  23. Me either.. I keep telling myself that it's only 10am though and the deadline for the survey was midnight last night so I shouldn't expect anything until this afternoon.
