  1. I've been feeling imposter syndrome ever since I got accepted at my top choice. I keep feeling like I don't belong at such a great program and institution, and that when I start I won't know what to do!! But this was really reassuring, Thank you so much for this!!
  2. Definitely agree with slp2beeplz. I served as my school's NSSLHA VP, and it definitely opened up a lot of opportunities. My NSSLHA chapter was very adamant about reaching out into the community and providing networking/workshop/volunteer opportunities with local SLPs, clinics, etc. So it was a nice way to meet people and get your name out into the community. Also, the undergrad SLP program at my school is fairly small, so it was a great way for me to stand out during the application process, since all of the professors know the NSSLHA board and interact with us quite often. When I was applying, my top choice (which is the school I committed to) values leadership, and it is one of their goals to instill leadership qualities in their grad students. So it made me a great fit for them! I loved it! I did it because I wanted to pay it forward and help all the new students in the program kind of find their way and navigate through undergrad. As an undergrad, I was fortunate to have made friends with the grad students at my school who did that for me, so I wanted to be in a position where people felt they could turn to me and ask me for help. It is a great addition to your application, and shows your dedication to the field, your ability to take initiative in leadership positions, and your ability to manage your time with academics + the organization + whatever else you might have going on. It won't hurt to have on your resume/app, but make sure you're in it for the right reasons other than as a resume builder! I do agree again with slp2beeplz that if you're doing it for the right reasons then it'll not only benefit your app, but benefit you as a person. Something I wish I had known was that being on the board is a whole other job in itself, it was very time consuming and stressful at times, but at the end of the day I don't regret doing it because I made some great connections in a way that I never would have if I hadn't taken the position. Good luck!
  3. I applied late Feb and got an interview offer within 2-3 days after submitting, but I ended up withdrawing my application because I got accepted to one of my top choices. My close friend interviewed at MWU and was accepted via phone call within 2 weeks back in dec/january. She has until mid-April to accept.. so there's a chance they may give more offers after that date if all of their spots aren't filled. Goodluck!
  4. NYU was my first choice since the get go, and putting all academics aside, I think it'll be a better fit for me as a person. Also, during this time waiting, I kind of remembered why i loved it so much! I go to the city pretty much every other year when i visit my family in NJ, but I've never had a reason to visit NYU. The last time I was there, I wasn't in grad app mode so I didn't think about visiting the schools.. but it's alright! I need/want change! So i'm super excited to be in a new environment learning from new people. Thank you! I'm so proud, and grateful for the opportunities. I celebrated any acceptance and waitlist I got, because I know how competitive it is.. Just wish we could all get spots, so all of us hopeful SLPs can celebrate together! and congratulations to you too!! Especially on UW!! Such an amazing program!!!
  5. Wow Congratulations from a fellow west-coaster!!! I've been waiting to hear from TC because it was my other top choice, and I couldn't bring myself to make any final decisions until I heard from them. Maybe i'll hold off until tomorrow and if I don't hear anything i'll pay my deposit for my other program (which was my other top choice, so i'm still super psyched!) UPDATE: Kidding, just checked and their email went to my spam folder. Waitlisted! Not an acceptance but i'm proud to have even made it this far! This gave me what I needed though, taking this as a sign that NYU is where I am meant to be!
  6. That's so weird!! I'm definitely going to call them to make sure they got my FAFSA and my social...
  7. Me too!! I'm ready to make the jump for NYU, but can't seem to do it until I hear back from TC
  8. Yes! I got this email.. I tried calling but I just missed them by a few minutes, so I'll try again tomorrow.
  9. It sounds so exciting! I'm used to a campus, so it'll be nice to have a change. A big thing for me was change, I really want/need it! And I've heard great things about the people who go to NYU! A girl in my program lived in NY for a while, and was telling me that I'd love it at NYU and she really thinks it'll be a good fit for me. Hopefully she's right! haha Housing has definitely been on my mind since I got my offer! I was looking into the grad housing, but I think I may have missed the deadline. So i'm wondering what my options are right now.. I don't have full access yet because I haven't paid my deposit. My friend and I are planning to move in together. She's currently rooming with 3 girls she met via the housing website, but their lease ends in july.. right around the time i'm planning to head out there. Any tips for us??
  10. Wow that's so great! I really like that we get a say in our schedules too.. especially because a lot of programs tend to go by a cohort system where everyone is on the same track. But yay! I actually asked to get connected too but haven't had the time to email my student.. I was planning to do it this weekend but I just don't even know where to start with my questions!!
  11. Same goes for me! Initially NYU was my top choice for the research opportunities, but i'm pursuing a craniofacial speciality and was drawn to the opportunities that TC has for that area. I must say I've had such a great impression of NYU thus far.. I reached out to them via email with questions and informed them that I will not be able to attend the luncheon, and the gal offered to mail me the materials that the attendees will be receiving!! I still have my qualms about choosing a big program like NYU or TC because the faculty at these programs tend to be cold and unsupportive.. and support and collaboration is a big thing for me, especially coming from an undergrad program that is built on those principles I wish I knew someone in the program to get more info!! If you don't mind me asking, what the current student had to say about the program? Hopefully all good things? Thank you so much for offering to post about the open house!! I'm excited to read about it!!
  12. Awesome!! None of my friends/peers applied to schools in NY, so it's kind of tough for me right now trying to make decisions. I know a lot about CA schools, but not much about NY schools haha. But thank you so much! How do you like NYU? My friend just started in Jan for the masters forensic psych program and she loves it.. Hoping i'll love the school and the program without visiting.. I can't make it out there before my deposit deadline
  13. Similar to what other posters said, I started priming my recommenders ahead of time before I formally asked them. I Formally asked them in the beginning of the semester that I was going through the application process. After they agreed, I provided them with a nice portfolio with my name on it, which contained: 1) a personalized thank you note 2) a list of all my schools that they needed to write/fill out recommendations for, their due dates, & whether they were mail-in or online 2) my resume 3) bullet points of my areas interests/what I plan to do in graduate school and in my career. (Some people choose to provide them with a copy of their letter of intent, but I couldn't quite get mine down, so I gave them a quick blurb about my interests, etc.) Also, I would suggest giving them a deadline 1 month before they are actually due. A lot of my friends had issues with their recommenders not submitting them on time! Most of my apps were due Early January, but since I asked late august/early september, I gave them the due date of December 1st for all of my schools. I realize this sounds over the top, but it was a great tip I picked up from a friend of mine who was going through her CFY at the time. It just helps the recommenders write a detailed letter more tailored to you personally, especially because they'll most likely be writing letters for multiple people!
  14. Thanks for making this page! NYU was one of my top choices tied with TC Columbia. I haven't heard from columbia yet, but I'm thinking of jumping the gun and accepting NYU! I wish I could attend the open house on the 24th, but I'm from California and It's in the midst of midterms for me, so unfortunately I won't be there. Bummed though, I really wanted to be able to meet the professors and current students to get their take on the program.. But I already declined the offer from my home school (CSULB) because my sights are pretty set on NYU, so there's no turning back!
