Haven't heard anything yet!

Yes, that's true. Many departments have internal fellowships that may still be available to students.
-
I doubt it, the worst that could happen is they can't match the offer. I've never heard of anyone getting an offer revoked.
-
I'm doing this currently, but the difference is $5k. It is also good to note differences in cost of living between the two schools (if there is one). Asking never hurts!

I wouldn't consider Ithaca to be "rural". It's definitely small, but still a city. You should visit all three to help inform your decision!

Yes, Cornell has a bus from Ithaca to NYC campus and there are other companies with buses and shuttles to those areas.

Talked to some graduate students at my visit today and the one who does have a car mainly uses it when traveling out of town to visit his partner. Other than that, the others prefer to bike or walk. They did say a car is useful for groceries, but Uber does exist in Ithaca now. Ridesharing (Ithaca's version of zipcar - don't remember the name) is also an option.

For anyone considering applying next year, Emory's graduate program is really nice. I had the pleasure of visiting last week and was impressed. The department is currently combined with Math, but they will be splitting this Fall along with making new offices for the CS department. If you're interested in computational biology research or any research that has applications to medicine and biology, this is definitely the place for you!

How to find undergrad research?
collegesista replied to machinesupportsvector's topic in Computer Science
I would suggest REUs as well. Throughout my undergrad summers, I did 2 REUs and 1 HHMI fellowship and those experiences really shaped my motivation for attending graduate school! -
I think that's a good idea. I probably need to do that as well since I accepted a summer offer with a non-GEM employer

Probably not in terms of attending. I just mean like correspondence from students, professors, etc. Haven't received any at all.

I don't see why not. You gain more from applying than not applying.

Choosing based on school or advisor - Cs PhD
collegesista replied to VanillaLattte's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Does the advisor from school A have students from his former department or are they a new prof? You could try to get into contact with his current students and former students (if he has them). My general advice would be to go with the lab and not the school. You might be happy with the prestige, but if you're not doing research that you enjoy, is it really worth it? Also, go to visit days to talk to as many people in their respective labs as you can. -
Princeton Fall 18 admits anyone?
collegesista replied to pranaymanocha's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Yes, Computer Science PhD -
I agree with your comment wholeheartedly. I'm reading a lot of assumptions from the original poster, but not enough first-hand evidence. I think you're trying to make yourself feel better if you turn down an Ivy and that's perfectly fine – but go to visit day, talk to professors, and get insight from students to see how it's really like.

I had Skype/phone interviews with 2 professors from BMI and CSI last week.

I don't think so. Intel contacted me in December and it was very general. It didn't even mention "summer", so I assumed it was for full time.

Director of Admissions Committee emailed me due to a personal connection and said he would reach out to my POIs and told me to forward him any more names of people I'm interested in. One POI emailed me today.
