  1. Hey everyone, weird question here. What age are you for those of you getting interviews? The reason I ask is because I am 21 and graduating in May. In my opinion and in all the people I have shadowed and worked for, they all said I have a ton of experience and no doubt will get in. I applied to 5 schools and today I got rejected to the 5th. i have heard and seen online that admissions personnel prefer applicants who are older and not right out of school. I plan to apply again in the fall and get a some sort of job like a GC assistant but I’m worried that no matter what I do, I won’t get accepted cause I’ll be a “baby” at 22. Are of any of you my age or close that are so far successful in the application process? I’d rather be rejected based on experience cause I can improve on that but I can’t fast forward time and make myself older sooner.
  2. This past week has been rough because I really wasn't expecting full out rejections. I still have 1 school that I haven't heard from, but I'm still trying to plan for next year just in case. I do feel more confident this round though because I think we learned a bunch about the process and what we need to do to greatly improve our changes this next year. I have heard of crisis text line but haven't done it. I think I am going to though because I don't enjoy my current volunteering gig and don't want to do it for another year.
  3. I live in Boulder so Denver would be the closest. I just applied to a Genetics Assistant job in Lone Tree which is close to where my parents live. Really my 1st big dilemma is do I stay in Boulder (which for those of you who don't know, rent here is insanely expensive) or do I move to Parker back in with my parents (rent free but also will be rough lol). I think I'll do the crisis text line for volunteering as well. I currently volunteer for hospice but I do not like it at all. And I already have an offer to intern for a GC in Parker but its only for 4 hours once a week so getting a job is more important to me. If it were a perfect world, I would move back in with my parents for the year, work at the job I just applied to, intern once a week, and do the crisis text line from home. But I first have to get accepted to that job and hopefully they wouldn't mind me not starting till May. I may also take an online class such as Anatomy because that is one of the suggested classes I haven't taken and could boost my GPA.
  4. For those of you who have taken a year or more off after undergrad before applying or for those of you who are applying for the 2nd time, what did you do during your time off? I am a senior in undergrad and I work part time at a family practice doctors office but I don't know if I should continue this job for all of next year or find a new one. I applied to 5 and have been rejected to 4 so far so I don't know if my current job is helping me at all since none of the schools even gave me an interview. I don't know of any jobs that are similar to GC that only require a bachelors degree.
  5. Yep, I just emailed her and she said I am not invited for an interview.
  6. Should I assume it’s a no from Indiana University? Their site says invites are generally given in Jan and interviews held in February. On this forum I saw some people got invites Jan 24th but I haven’t heard anything at all. It’s probably not likely I’ll get an interview invite at this point right?
  7. Hi everyone! I need advice. So I have applied to 5 schools, 3 of which I have been rejected and 2 or which I have not heard from yet. The idea that I may have to apply for a second time is starting to set in. I have been thinking of various versions of plan Bs that I can do for the next year but since the schools want me to wait till after May 1st to contact them about why I got rejected, it is difficult for me to decide right now what I should do for the next year. But, I want to at least have some backups planned and not wait till May to start looking for a job or internship. I am a senior graduating in May with a Molecular Biology degree. For the past 2.5 years, I have been working in a behavioral genetics lab at my school, I have shadowed 3 GCs, I have been volunteering for Hospice for 1.5 years, I have been working at a Family Practice Doctor's office for 10 months now, and I have all the suggested/required courses. A year ago, I was offered an internship with a GC but she was an hour away so I had to say no because I couldn't commute that far while in school. Of those of you who have received interviews and are feeling confident, what do you suggest I work on the next year in order to make my application way stronger for the 2nd round. This is hard because all the people, GCs, and mentors I have talked to said I have a ton of experience and will for sure get in but here we are...I want to do everything I can to get in. This has been my dream job for years! Thanks guys!!
  8. So far I’ve been rejected to Rutgers, Denver, and Indiana State. Still waiting on Indiana Uni and Pitt. But I have a bad feeling about Indiana since it’s been so long since others got interview invites and the dates are soon. Fingers crossed for Pitt!
  9. I too got my rejection from Rutgers and Colorado today. Still waiting on Indiana State, Uni of Indiana, and Pittsburgh. Anyone know around when I should hear from them. Definitely feeling pretty pessimistic at this point.
