  1. I also haven't heard anything from Columbia, but I'm composition (and anticipate a rejection anyway).
  2. Somebody's an All-Star.... ีUniversity Of Wisconsin - Madison Physics, PhD (F18) Rejected via Other on 14 Feb 2018 ♦ A 14 Feb 2018 Some-body once told me my study habits were going to role me. I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed. I was lookin kinda dumb with my application done and the night I hit myself in the fore-head, cuz My scores were nowhere near good enough for this school. rip, I so badly wanted to go here. Didn't oficially get rejected but at this point I have given up hope.
  3. Last week I had a dream that I was on campus for a program that rejected me...while I was there in person! Then this week I got the rejection in reality.
  4. Well, there's my rejection on the website. Maybe in two years...
  5. I'll be expecting my rejection soon too then for the composition program.......
  6. Have you heard about any acceptances for composition, or just for music theory/history? Based on past years' results, composition results don't come in until February.
  7. Congratulations on the acceptance. Like ks391262, I'm applying for their PhD in composition, though I think my chances of getting accepted without any music degree, much less a master's, are very low.
  8. Not a rejection, but another joke post: Trump University Gender Studies, PhD (F18) Accepted via Phone on 25 Jan 2018 ♦ A 25 Jan 2018 wrote "I have great respect for women" in my sop.
  9. Based on results from past years, I think they're expected sometime between mid-February and early March. I know that many schools have only just started their spring term or are about to soon.
  10. A few from my intended discipline: Stanford Music Composition, PhD (F15) Rejected via E-mail on 11 Feb 2015 A 11 Feb 2015 report spam Bunch of nihilists. UC Berkeley Music Composition, PhD (F17) Rejected via E-mail on 13 Feb 2017 ♦ A 13 Feb 2017 Oh well, among my last choices... I write music for an audience, not an academic circle jerk. If you don't like what the department is doing, why apply? Columbia (GSAS) Music Composition, DMA, Other (F12) Rejected via Website on 15 Mar 2012 A 15 Mar 2012 Meh, If you're not from McGill, you've very little chance of getting in My favorite is this one, though: University Of Chicago Music Composition, PhD (F13) Rejected via E-mail on 4 Mar 2013 U 4 Mar 2013 Link to site / Generic rejection letter / Generic reaction on my side too...
  11. Especially as we have several people here, such as yourself, whose experience goes against the original hypothesis. How prevalent something "feels" to a given individual and how prevalent it actually is are often completely different.
  12. There was a forum topic about this question, so I'll leave a link to that here: https://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/38585-practice-gre-scores-vs-real-gre-scores/ My own scores on the PowerPrep tests, taken one and two days before, were very close to my scores on the actual GRE. PowerPrep 1: 170V/160Q PowerPrep 2: 169V/157Q Real GRE: 169V/160Q/5.5AW
  13. Ditto and ditto. At least the wording in their form emails is friendlier than Columbia's...
  14. Good luck! I'm sorry that your results haven't been going well so far, but that doesn't mean you won't get in somewhere you like.
  15. I got three Quant sections, so that pattern applies to me as well (intended music major).
  16. I feel that everything is against me in the more selective departments I'm applying to. My undergrad was several years ago, I majored in fields different from the one I'm going into, and on top of that I was a semi-underperforming student (four C grades, CGPA between 3.0 and 3.5, but with general upward trend). Even though my GRE scores are great (V 99%, Q 76%, AW 98%), I have a lot to prove. Putting in the application fee for Columbia felt like throwing money away... On top of all that, I'm not going to hear back from any of these schools until February! At least I got into a master's program at my safety school already.
  17. I've submitted my application to University of Chicago. That wraps up my applications for the year. Good luck to everyone!
  18. The Verbal GRE score will likely be lower than most program averages in the field, and that (unfortunately) counts more than the combined 320. It's hard to judge how competitive you are without knowing what programs you're looking at, but that score, combined with a GPA of under 3.5, will mean that you will have to compensate with other compelling reasons for admission. Perhaps you're very interested in a topic that fits perfectly with the interests of a specific professor in that program, or you can bring a unique perspective to discussions of poetry because of your engineering background. Use whatever you can and think about what sets you apart. (Former English/Philosophy major who is also switching fields, but to Music.)
  19. The way the GRE is organized, there are two sections each of verbal and quantitative questions, each giving you about a half hour (30 min for verbal, 35 min for quant). How well one does on the first of each type of section determines the difficulty level of the second section. This doesn't mean that the first few questions lock you into some specific result, because it doesn't calculate anything until you finish the section. Each question within a section is worth the same amount, but that amount is related to the difficulty of the section. The first section of each type will always be of medium difficulty, and the second will be harder, the same, or easier depending on how you do. Question types tend to be pretty evenly distributed, with a few algebra, a few statistics, a few geometry, and so on. You can use the official site to see the types of questions that you can expect on the test. Take the free practice tests, too, to get a sense of what your scores will be. (My scores were 169V/160Q/5.5AW)
  20. Thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to take that into account when retooling my SoP essay.
  21. Your TOEFL score is above most colleges' cutoffs, so they may be willing to overlook the low verbal as not reflecting your ability to use English. You'll never get in if you don't try. I suppose I should say that some will be willing to overlook it, others won't, but I couldn't tell you which ones fall into which category.
  22. I'm not quite that young, as I finished my undergrad studies a few years ago, and certainly could have a master's degree by now if I had decided on my life trajectory earlier on. It just took me some time to develop my skills and work on my personal life before I was ready to go back to school. Still, I wish you the best of luck too! Just sent in my application to Columbia's DMA program. It feels good, even though I don't have much of a chance.
  23. Don't have a master's degree in any subject, and you're certainly right that I'm facing an uphill battle in applying to extremely competitive programs. My bachelor's degree wasn't even in music; I double majored in English/Philosophy, got decent but not spectacular grades, and this was some time ago too. Still, like I said, my teacher is telling me I should try. I applied to master's programs at UMass Amherst (where I'm sure to be accepted) and University of Maryland College Park (where I was received quite well when I visited). I made it clear to both that my goal was to get a doctoral degree afterwards. You're right that UChicago doesn't specify essays on music, but I lost all of my undergrad papers in a hard drive disaster last year, and if I could find a hard copy of, say, my final paper for Philosophy Seminar, it wouldn't represent my abilities now very well anyway, given how much experience I've had since (I'd be afraid to read it now). Also, given my particular path, my best chance to show my readiness for a DMA/PhD program is to blow committees away by presenting them work that's already at the level they're looking for. My GRE scores are strong, but that's hardly enough. Best of luck to you!
  24. I finished my two masters applications and sent them in a while ago, and I'm working on DMA/PhD applications for University of Chicago and Columbia (both due on Dec. 15). I took the GRE, and now I'm hard at work on a second essay to prove my musicological chops to UChicago. I might not have done it, but my teacher thinks I'd be a good fit there, and encouraged me to go for it.
