  1. I feel like it's almost impossible to have an interview and not leave with a "well...I blew that" feeling. I bet it went better than you think!
  2. @waltzforzizi @yzo@mofanthrooo Any guess as to why four were interviewed instead of the usual 15? Not that it matters to me at this point. Gonna throw myself a pity party and then figure out Plan B as this was my top choice too
  3. Not arch. Sociocultural....which is what the one poster posted about. Maybe arch goes out later and you still have a shot!!
  4. @yzo @MofanthroooI'm bummed too. They offered that poster four time slots when in previous years they've offered 15 time slots reflective of the # of people interviewed... so I wonder if funding was that tight this year?!
  5. Looks like an administrator emailed that person offering 4 slots. Eek.
  6. It makes me wonder why some schools ask for a 'diversity statement' and how one's unique background could contribute to the richness of discussion in the classroom/community. if drawing on personal experience is frowned upon, why ask that?
  7. Thanks for the replies everyone. I ended up submitting an updated CV and got a cryptic "thanks....." as a response from the graduate coordinator. Hoping that's not a "thanks....we don't care" and a "thanks...we're busy but we'll update your file!" instead.
  8. Thank you! It was a small journal, but still pretty cool nonetheless!
  9. Since submitting my PhD apps back in November, I have published a paper (which was under review at the time of submission) and received a significant academic award in my field of study. Is it worth contacting the schools I've applied to give them an updated CV with this info?
  10. I like that a thread about how NOT to think about the PhD application process/decisions turned into a conversation about PhD applications/decisions Edit - I know I contributed to that
  11. Ahhh so much stress before the holidays. I am taking it easy and then will probably panic beginning of January and feel what you're feeling. Best of luck! What is your field? Also feel free to dm if we're getting off topic for this thread (lol...sorry everyone).
  12. You get invites this week?? I thought adcoms didn't even touch applications til after the holidays (regardless of school and program). I'm kind of jealous.
  13. Oops sorry! Didn't mean to freak you out. If it makes you feel better, I googled it and apparently "PhD" is also allowed. I installed Grammarly on my computer recently and it keeps correcting PhD to Ph.D. I guess because it is more "formally correct". Anyway, ignore me. I am sure you did just fine on your apps and in the grand scheme of things, this will not matter!
  14. I've been freaking myself out by re-checking the materials I applied with to check for errors. I know that's a TERRIBLE THING TO DO, but I don't know how to stop myself. So far I've found two errors: 1) I said "PhD" instead of "Ph.D." in my SoP; 2) my CV font is somehow a size 8! I don't know how I didn't notice that before submitting. I used a template from my university and it defaulted to a size 8 and I never changed it. I think I need a new hobby....one that involves leaving my house...seeing people...doing stuff... I'm super glad people on this forum get the anxiety that comes with waiting
  15. @GreenEyedTrombonistThank you! Do you mind if I shoot you a PM with a specific question about methodology? I don't want to get too off topic on here.
  16. For Canadian schools, it would help to speak to your POI and ask them what sort of project they'd supervise. Since most large and well-known schools in Canada are public and PIs receive funding from the government, it is all a 'different game' than applying to American private schools where this is not the case. So for example, for my masters, which was sorta competitive (they had 90ish applicants for 5 spots), I learned that all the students who were admitted in my cohort were students who had PIs lined up before applying. I had to contact supervisors before applying and say "are you taking on students and if so, for what sort of projects?" (I wrote this more formally to them, of course). When I applied to my school, I already had a PI and project ready. I had to write about that project in my SOP, but at that point it just seemed like a formality, because I was already told by my PI I could start working on it. I started working on my master's project the summer before my master's program even started. When the program started in the fall, I was taking courses and working for the same PI and the other 4 students in my cohort were working for PIs too. This process is more or less the same for PhD. The most important thing to getting into many Canadian PhD programs is to have a PI who is willing to take you on board and supervise you. If not that, then you need to demonstrate how you will support yourself (i.e. that you have applied for external grants and will come with funding of your own). The rest of the "application process" just seems like a formality. I'm so used to this Canadian process that I was VERY CONFUSED and surprised to learn that it doesn't work like this in America. Anyway, I rambled here a bit, but I hope this sorta helps?
  17. @TakeruK Thank you so much for sharing all this! This post clears up so many of my questions. I'm glad I'm not the only one to have been confused by this Canada vs US process. I am applying to private schools in the States (due to funding opportunities for int'l students as well as research match) and found myself very confused by the process when the school's graduate advisors just told me to "apply and decide my PI and project once I get in". Anthro departments I'm applying to have that process you're talking about...where we take the first term just to figure out what we like and who our advisors will be. It still confuses me a bit how admissions committee can look at your SOP/compare it to others and make it the primary tool they use for admissions. Some schools I've spoken to say that the SOP is the single most important thing they look at. But they don't outline what exactly they look for. Whether they'll have advisors available to supervise you? Or just a good/sound project that is in line with your previous work? Your insights really helped clear some of this up. I'm gonna go edit mine now!
  18. Oh, gotcha! Thanks for answering. I see your location is Cali and I'm applying to schools there from Canada (but not UCI or any of the UCs). The US application process is so confusing haha apparently it's completely normal to not have a PI before you actually get in the program. A crapshoot indeed. Good luck to you too!!
  19. So lucky! I"ve been having a terrible time getting responses from supervisors. Mind me asking what school that is?
  20. Hooray!!!! No worries, I'm still in the process of editing it. I will message you next week
  21. Thanks so much for the response. This is so helpful I'm applying to Ph.D. programs in Anthro from an MA in Ethics and have no idea if I'm articulating my thoughts well since I'm not too familiar with anthropological methods and theory. I hope they don't view that too negatively. Writing this SOP is killing me If you are open to looking at a complete stranger's SOP, let me know! I can look at yours too!
  22. If your research interests changed so drastically, who supervised you? I'm guessing it wasn't the PI that worked on Alzheimer's and dementia?
  23. Thanks so much for the response! At Stanford anthro all their PIs do such diverse work that if I can't work with one of the two that I"m really interested in, then I'm kind of screwed. Their research focuses are all so different that I can't possibly be interested in 5...it'd just be spreading myself too thin. I guess I won't worry about it too much and will just apply and see what happens. Although it is still weird to me to be writing an SOP with my interests without knowing those PIs are actually taking students. Like taking a shot in the dark for a program that is already very competitive. Gah!
