Rejected at NYU... maybe I should’ve applied to only English programs. Congrats to those accepted! -
Asking About Placement Rates
jusrain replied to Pnwonder's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I plan to talk about this with the DGS on my upcoming visits, and for some programs I’ve already emailed and asked POI or directors. Nobody seemed to deflect the question, though many said “not everyone has wanted to continue in academia” to explain lower rates (which was sort of a red flag for me, but for those who aren’t sure about academia it could be a good thing). Schools do have this data available in some form or another, usually, and I think they expect you to ask because I’ve even had some directors volunteer this information when I inquired about their programs as a prospective applicant. If you’ve already been admitted, I don’t think it’s out of the ordinary at all to ask what alumni are doing, and placement rates are a kind of implied part of this question. It’s super awkward but I don’t know if there’s a way around it, just like negotiating offers. Also, it may make it seem less “superficial” if you preface it by saying something like “I know placement rates are measured differently from institution to institution, but could you qualitatively assess job-search success for recent graduates?” And then maybe asking current students how prepared they feel for MLA, and/or how supportive the department is in their job-search, would indicate to folks that you’re thinking about placement as one of numerous important factors in your decision making process. Sorry if this isn’t helpful at all but hopefully it helps normalise the question (?). I think we really shouldn’t be afraid of asking it because it’s our futures we’re looking out for.- 3 replies

Feeling this as well. -
Anticipated cohort size is 12-13 according to my POI, so there’s still some hope, I think! Only 7 (legitimate) acceptances on the board so far. Not sure if they only admit 12-13 and then waitlist the rest, or if they over-admit in anticipation of people declining their spots. Just expect a call at a random time if it’s good news, like super early in the morning or late at night, since it looks like that’s when everyone else accepted got theirs. Rooting for you! Edit: spelling/grammar

Hope we can all meet up at the visit weekend! I was so sure I didn’t get in. I hope it’s good news for more today

In at Rutgers... expected cohort size is 12-13
-
It’s okay! Congrats to you
-
Thank you! I’m not going to hope too much but good to know. Do you know anything about cohort size?
-
Do you folks think Rutgers is done with acceptances? So implied rejections now?
-
To add to Warelin’s response, I would put more weight on the opinions of profs in your sub field and maybe NRC rankings from Chronicle of Higher Ed
-
Does anyone know normal cohort size for Rutgers?
-
So, if I understand what I’ve seen on here, we expect Rutgers acceptances to come in today and tomorrow, right? So IR if we don’t hear by then

You just made my day with this news! It’s terrible not knowing when my doom will come lol. Thank you! -
Does anyone know how to sleep through the night anymore... asking for a friend

I agree with a lot of this, and absolutely love Stuart Hall! I forgot about New Ethnicities, thank you

I’ve been constantly reading lines from Lorde’s iconic speech where she reminds us that “the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house,” and I think it’s an important reminder here— both of you are right, the use of academia (which in itself is complicit with the false-promises and perils of the hegemonic discourse) for the purposes of liberation and survival is limited and potentially hazardous.

I agree with you and @3131 in that the term insinuates that there is such thing as a monolithic “non-White” other, but I also want to push back (as a POC and student of “ethnic” literature, so no devil’s advocate here) to ask if there is relevance, any longer, to the origins and intentions of (capital E) Ethnic Studies as a field. From what I understand, the field was created as an attempt to subvert White political hegemony. It was a pan-ethnic movement built throughout the civil rights and post-soul eras to “revive” lost histories and identifications, and promote interdisciplinary thought. and certainly there are many problems with pan-Africanist and other similar traditions, but I think the history of this field is important. I need to research more, but I wonder if some of the departments that use this term do so because they housed thinkers who helped coin it. Which may no longer be relevant because of the work they did to carve out a space for non-white subjectivity in academia.

@rr732 And I think this is sort of legally-binding, or a policy at least. One of my schools said, essentially, “while we legally can’t ask you to respond before April 15th, if you know you want to go here before then, please let us know.” Edit: did the research after writing this, and it is indeed a policy called the April 15th Resolution by the Council of Graduate Schools. Details/list of schools this includes is attached. CGSResolution_RevisedFeb2019.pdf

Does anyone want to claim the 2 Harvard acceptances? -
Spam folder caught CUNY acceptance email from professor... not an academic address so hoping this is real.
-
I hope you get in here, or another program you’re passionate about! I seriously think it’s a multiple-day acceptance thing, though (and they sent rejections first, which is odd).
