  1. feel better punctilious! Lots of OJ! Yay, that's awesome!!! Congrats to him!!!
  2. I imagine the following scene taking place in telemarketer board rooms across the country: [Jenkins] [Holding hot cup of coffee] "Well, Jones, it seems that February is just around the corner. You know what that means..." [Jones] "What's that, sir?" [Jenkins] "Don't you know? Those sorry bastards applying to grad school are itching for updates on the statuses of their applications!" [Jones] [Takes nervous sip of coffee and readjusts tie] "...and?" [Jenkins] "They'll be glued to their phones, fool!" [Jones] [Furrows brow in a gesture of deep contemplation; after a few moments, claps hands and jumps from his seat] "So, for once, they'll answer our calls!" [Jenkins] [With a sinister grin] "They'll have no choice!" [Jones] "We could even call them under the area codes of the most common schools!" [Jenkins] [Grins broadly] "Genius! With that kind of thinking, you'll make junior-assistant associate before you know it!" [Both take inaudible sips of their coffees]
  3. “for-in-that-sleep-of-death-what-dreams-may-come-when-we-have-shuffled-off-this-mortal-grad-applications-coil-must-give-us-pause” shellacked!
  4. I've heard this quite often, as well. I really enjoyed the movies (like pretty much everyone else); however, each time I discuss them with my family/friends, they invariably say, "Yes, they're awesome, BUT ... [insert cut plot point here]." As an aside, I find it kind of humorous that I've read more of Tolkien's ME scholarship than the fiction for which he's famous. But, when you take a Chaucer seminar, these things happen.
  5. Thanks for the input, @JustPoesieAlong! My friends have all said the same, and Samwise is quite popular among them, too. I also love when Colbert had a LotR-themed week on his Report (in 2012, I believe), during which, on the way to interview Andy Serkis, he was intercepted out of nowhere by Ian Mckellen, who chanted "YOU ... SHALL ... pass!" So cute and funny I think I'm going to give the books a shot! I've got nothing to lose, after all.
  6. Netflix recently released the first Lord of the Rings movie, and after watching that, I'm seriously considering reading the books. My parents and many of my friends are huge LotR nerds, and they've been badgering me forever to read them. The only rub is that I'm not much of a fantasy guy, and I also hear that "One does not simply read LotR" since it's a huge world and the books are long, etc. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Any LotR nerds out there? Other than that, in anticipation of re-learning Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, I'm reading Isacoff's Temperament, which is about how the West came to accept the equal-temperament tuning system that made today's music possible. It's quite good! I'm also a huge music nerd, so there you go!
  7. YAYY!!!!!!!! CONGRATS!!!!
  8. YAYYYYYY!!!!!! You go, Glen Coco!!!
  9. YAY congrats, @EspritHabile!
  10. Can't they make an exception for acceptance likes or upvotes???!
  11. YAAAAAAS!!!! CONGRATS!!!!
  12. Thanks, @HopefulRhetorician! And don't lose faith! Despite @unræd's username (which, yes, I had to Google), he does, as @Warelin says, give very good advice.
  13. Thanks, @unræd! I may very well take you up on that. If I do end up at OSU, I'll certainly hunt down Old Bill so I can thank him for his prodigious wisdom!
  14. Thanks @la_mod ! Although, with 15 decisions left, there's plenty of time for some good ol' shellacking!
  15. Neither! I just checked the website and it said I was accepted!
  16. Thanks, @M(allthevowels)H and @Marritz21!!
  17. True, true, but his 60,000 posts were probably taxing the servers. And, you know, there's the whole PhD thing.... And thanks, @Warelin and @mk-8!!!
  18. Yes to all of these thing, and thank you again!!!! I'm wishing the best for all the other OSU applicants, as well!!!! I'm also, as usual, out of reactions, so I'll hit everyone up with some love tomorrow!

  20. @JustPoesieAlong, I'm crossing my fingers for you!
  21. Thank you so much @Yanaka! I totally agree, Old Bill is a boss. His past posts here were a huge help in just about every stage of the app process.
