Do you mean how to approach RSVPing/logistics, or how to approach an open house where regardless of what people say, you'll be attending?

Hi! I've been on the Sociology forum since every other program I applied to was pure soc, but I actually can claim the SHIPS acceptance! I was notified by the same professor who interviewed me, via email. I'm not sure when official emails from the department come out. Best of luck to everyone!

One thing I've found extremely helpful to ask during interviews, and that I definitely plan to ask as many people as I can during my upcoming visit, is "what do you wish you had done in advance of starting the program?". I think it gives a really good insight for what daily life in the program feels like, it gets grad students and professors mentally picturing you in the program, and you get great advice out of it! (So far all of my answers have been "learn to code/get better at coding", which is more or less what I expected since I'm computational sociology, but that is almost always followed up with ideas on how to do that more effectively, with links to online resources and such).

Have any of the UW-Madison admits received their offer letters yet? I keep getting emails from POIs that assume I've received and read mine, which is awkward, to say the least... I know that they snail-mailed them, but I'm wondering if I should confirm that they had the right address at this point

I got an email from the director at a research center, she asked if I was attending the March 9th visit, no more details other than that. The information is supposed to be in the welcome letter, but I haven't gotten mine yet. It would be fantastic if they funded it, I've just been assuming that's not the case. (Although even with funding, it might be a bit iffy to leave my college right before finals. I could manage it, but I'm just trying to gauge how much weight to assign to visits priority wise)

On a related topic, how likely are you all to attend visit days in general? I got an invite to Madison's admitted visit day, I'm trying to figure out what to do. It would be expensive to travel since I'm in California finishing up my bachelors, I do love the school, but I am still waiting to hear back from my dream program. I know it's not literally mandatory, but how odd is it to not attend? I want to remain respectful to the program and professors there.

Do you know when that is? I've been trying to find information on it but I haven't received any formal notice

Jaime Johnson's stuff is on Hulu, I always love his pieces on income inequality, since he has such an inside scoop and his stuff is very raw as a result. He was very young when he made his documentaries, early twenties I think, and it's amazing how candid the people he interviewed were! Particularly in Born Rich. I also love The Queen of Versailles (about the Siegel family, not Marie Antoinette), it's usually on Netflix or Hulu. Haha, can you tell I'm interested in studying social stratification?

Hi all, Duke waitlist here, I'm not sure if this info was posted elsewhere, but my waitlist email said that Duke only accepted/will accept 7, and that the waitlist is 6 people, not numbered! They had 163 applicants... Which is an insane ratio!

Hi y'all! First-time poster, long time lurker. This will also be my first application cycle. My interests are a triangle field between social stratification, public education, and network science/computational sociology. I have research experience in educational sociology, as well as network science/computational methodology. The network science research is what I really hope brings my application together, since that was a solo larger project funded by the NSF. I know my letters of rec are strong (one prominent computational professor, an assistant professor in educational soc, and a school of ed. lecturer that I've been conducting research with for a while). GRE: 166V/160Q, 5.0 Writing. GPA: 3.8 overall, 3.95 soc. What I'm nervous about is the statement of purpose, I feel like I've read it so many times it's no longer comprised of discrete sentences! My transcript is also a mess, I'm a transfer student at a large public university who has also attended private college and community college (so I have a handful of random G.E.'s that make less sense in context and bring down my gpa). I'm applying all over: UCSB UC Berkeley Stanford (SHIPs program, joint doctorate in Education and Sociology) Duke Notre Dame Princeton Harvard UChicago UMichigan - Ann Arbor Madison - Wisconsin I also have a backup Masters program that doesn't require applications until March, so if none of those reach schools work out, I will just apply there since it's local and I am confident I could get in.
