  1. Apparently UW-Madison is using an unranked waitlist, using "a variety of factors" to determine who receives the next offer if one is declined.
  2. I'm also very anxious about UNC, hoping we hear from them this week.
  3. I'm torn, as you seem to be. On the one hand, one could make a terrible impression and spoil one's otherwise fair chance at an excellent education. On the other hand, they are making a significant commitment when they offer us admission, and it's fair that they want some more assurance that they're making the right choice or that they won't hate working with us. Academics are crucial, but they aren't the only factor.
  4. You inspired me to send a similar email to Madison. Fingers crossed.
  5. Any word from MSU? They always come out much sooner than this.
  6. I can't imagine why they would think that's an appropriate thing to put in a rejection letter. It will either be puzzling or discouraging, but not helpful. Okay, they could do worse, but that doesn't make it good.
  7. Thanks! One of my letter writers went to UIC so I am looking forward to giving them the news. The rejection from Notre Dame came from the website. I got an email telling me to check the app portal and there was a generic rejection letter waiting for me.
  8. Rejected at Notre Dame and waitlisted at UIC! Dr Sutherland called with the news and said that given I am "at the very top of the waitlist" it is "almost certain" that I will be offered admission.
  9. Impressive list! Any of those your top choice?
  10. Yep. All the things I could have done this week instead of anxiously peruse GradCafe, yet I'm still here...
  11. I'd upvote you to hell but apparently I'm all out of reactions today.
  12. I know that others have done it, even being accepted to programs with excellent reputations. I'm pretty sure some have posted in this thread. It's more difficult I'm sure, but this whole process is a crapshoot. It's increasing your chances by a fair amount just to try again without making changes, let alone actively improving your packet.
  13. This would mean a lot more coming from someone who had to do it and was fine, but you may need to try again next year, or whenever it is feasible for you to try again. That would also give you time to strengthen your preparation as a scholar, get better GRE scores, improve or write a better writing sample, and whatever else you can do to make yourself more appealing (on paper). Unfortunately, all they have is what's visible on paper, based on very inconsistent measurements, and sometimes very good people don't get an acceptance. You may also consider widening your search a bit; there are excellent programs that don't look that way in the PGR, but their graduates are happy and get good jobs. In short: don't lose hope, but getting shut out is not the end of the world, not even close.
  14. Thanks for the note. I mainly applied because van Fraassen is there and they have an excellent placement record. It doesn't seem to matter anymore, as I don't plan on attending unless their offer is too good to refuse.
  15. I had rejections from both Yale and UCLA waiting for me this morning. I expected the Yale rejection, but the UCLA letter stung a little. Maybe your letter just isn't posted yet, or maybe you're on a waitlist. Someone was saying earlier this week that they haven't notified their waitlist yet, so that could be a good sign. Have to wait and see.
  16. Nice, congrats! I'm really hoping to get off the waitlist at Madison as well. It's very encouraging to hear that they're already making offers to people on their waitlist.
  17. Has anyone already turned down at least one offer? It's early days yet, but I'm still interested to hear who might be drawing from waitlists.
  18. Thanks! That's very good to know. I'm not sure if I will be able to visit, they didn't mention visiting the department and my finances are pretty tight right now, but it's nice to hear that they're friendly even when they're not trying to woo you.
  19. I was accepted to UW-Milwaukee. They notified me early because they nominated me for a fellowship. The coordinator at SF State indicated in mid-January that I should hear back in the next few weeks, so I expect something from them any day now.
  20. I feel awful not getting any notifications tonight. I'm not sure why, I've already had good news from great places. Perhaps my expectations are/were unrealistic. My drink of choice is whiskey, and I am partaking.
  21. The key here seems to be perceived duty, and many perceive a duty to die for their children or some cause if the moment came. Regardless, there might be a duty in some cases, such as if you're responsible for the threat to their life or you know that not doing so would lead to much greater harms that cannot otherwise be prevented.
  22. Very interesting! I don't think that necessarily follows though. We can imagine someone who endorses some duty to die, or a duty that would override their duty to self-preservation, such as a suicide mission or taking a bullet for a loved one. In that case, they seem to have a duty that goes against their well-being that isn't necessarily irrational! Thus there wouldn't be an inherent contradiction. Although that could also be read as an indirect duty to oneself in service of greater direct duty. I think that's Herr Professor Doktor Kant to us!
  23. I'm not terribly fond of Hegel, but I like the summary!
  24. That does seem Kantian, but it also seems wrong that he should have a duty to himself whether he endorses it or not. I'm sure he does have that duty to himself, but because he wants to live, not because he must. Splitting hairs, I know, but we're all just saying that we want you to take care of yourself (in different ways)!
  25. Congrats, they're a great program! What's your AOI?
