CanadianEnglish reacted to MichelleObama in 2020 Applicants
Got rejected from Brown and Princeton today, and despite the fact that I have great offers already, I am still SO BUMMED and am investing in drinking champagne in the afternoon and dreaming about having health insurance in September. I feel like I got dumped twice by two different people and I only even wanted to date one of them but I needed them both to love me??? 2 more schools to hear back from and it will be O V E R I C A N N O T W A I T

@TiredStressed @asongreference Joining the ~still waiting to hear from UNC~ club! I'm wondering if maybe we're on the waitlist for the waitlist that @CanadianEnglish found out about? If I don't hear anything by the end of the week I'm probably going to email the DGS.

Oh, no. Those are some unfortunate mistakes.
I used to grade standardized exams and one ninth grader somehow mixed up Anne Frank and Harriet Tubman.

Okay so there's an applicants thread and an acceptances thread. Where's the thread where someone tells me what to do.

Hello! I made this account just to respond to you. (Long time lurker) I've noticed several people asking questions about UNC Chapel Hill and I personally had written them off as a rejection when I saw acceptances and didn't hear anything, but I ended up getting an acceptance several days later. (I am now one of the acceptance posts on the results page.) The email I received said they won't be sending official acceptance letters out for a couple more weeks, so I think it is safe to hold onto some hope for now.

So after I got my rejection from USC at 4 AM yesterday, I woke up today with a phone call from Rhode Island. I've been accepted to URI with a TAship, and I admire several of the faculty members there. I saw on the results page someone else was accepted this morning, too, so if anybody wants to compare notes or share thoughts about the program and other offers, please reach out to me! I have a feeling I'm going to be torn between my current options.
I'm honestly just happy to have the win right now. Having eight rejections was starting to weigh on me.

Coming out of heavy lurk mode (I feel like I know everyone here!? ?) to say that I was also admitted to Princeton today. I missed the phone call, but the DGS left a very nice voicemail and followed up with an email.
Fingers crossed for everyone still waiting to hear back! x

Okay I'll stop now. My heart is being pulled in 10,000 directions and beating very fast because I wasn't expecting anything over the weekend but ... I just ... got in ... to Princeton.
I know it's obnoxious but I'm posting 1. For posterity, so people know this can happen 2. Because my entire family asked me repeatedly over Christmas "What will you do if you get rejected from everywhere?" and I was so terrified because I'd worked so hard night and day on apps I didn't have an answer. And while I was feverishly working on them an awful ex-boyfriend asked to "swing by and wish me luck" a few days before the deadline and walked into my living room to say "You know you're really not smart, right? You try to make it seem like you are but you just never ... produce much of anything" About that, luv. About that.
I felt like a loser for two years after a particularly shitty time during my masters, and I've struggled with having zero self confidence even longer than that. I have had embarrassing failures that made a huge dent in my ability to move forward. This? It can happen. Admissions is a wildly unfair process and I think more than anything I've just been incredibly incredibly lucky, but I lurked on these boards on and off for years thinking, "I'm too stupid, I'm a loser, this will never happen for me." For anyone who remotely fits that description reading this now or in future just please know that it can.

I AM ALSO CURIOUS ABOUT THIS
My initial thought would be that it'd be a bit like the scene in Fleabag where the therapist says, "You already know what you're going to do; everybody does"—that I'd just sort of ... know, instinctively? But no, not at all.

No, I definitely wouldn't worry! The profs I've spoken to have said that finding a TT position is so competitive no matter what. Also, that it depends on the type of university. One prof said that high-ranked, research intensive universities will give preference to those who come from a top 10/top 20, whereas teaching universities may not. However, I have also been told that it's the relationships built between you and your diss. director/committee. And that their letters of rec, the networking they help you do, and their work/reputation in the field, is what is extremely important.

CanadianEnglish got a reaction from karamazov in 2020 Applicants
@politics 'n prose and anyone else who is waiting for UNC Chapel Hill:
I inquired about my status/when news would be released and the DGS wrote me a nice email about how my application is still pending because "while we have not decided to deny your application, at this moment both the admit list and the wait list are full. If from that larger pool we cannot create our incoming class, we will add your name to the waitlist." SO I gathered that since they have their acceptances/waitlists ready they should be sending out information soon. I would imagine tomorrow or early next week. If you don't hear anything, I would also assume that you are like me and are on a waiting list for the waitlist (lol what a concept). I do not know if the waitlists are by overall rank or by interest or by POI.
Hope this helps!

I just emailed UNC Chapel Hill's DGS to inquire about when they are sending out news. Will update if or when I hear back.
Hope every gets a bit of good news for the rest of the week!

Oh, bless you—Chapel Hill is the last school I’m waiting to hear from (and potentially the best fit of all the schools I applied to, for whatever that’s worth) and I’m driving myself a little mad trying to figure out when they’ll notify based on past years’ results. Thank you, brave soldier!

CanadianEnglish reacted to caffeinated applicant in 2020 Applicants
@ adcomms: look y'all I wrote down in each week of my planner which schools I expected to hear from and with the exception of UT-Austin and Chicago, y'all are S L A C K I N G. Harvard is excused because you're always late but the rest of you............................................... I'm waiting (respectfully) pls
(It does not help matters that I emailed Maryland about status a week and a half ago, and I emailed UT-Austin yesterday to reiterate interest and ask if there's been movement, and neither has gotten back to me. I can understand if communications on the subject are embargoed until they're able to offer or decline, because that's the kind of thing that universities love to do even if it's--IMO--unhelpful and rude, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that this is the reason behind the lack of response rather than reading into it...)

I am expecting today to be pretty chill and tomorrow to be the opposite. We've heard from @meghan_sparkle that Columbia will likely notify around the 21st, and I think Rutgers will accept people this weekend as well. ?

Due to someone deleting information, I had to roll the spreadsheet back to a version from a few days ago. Please do not delete information unless you're updating information for that school.
If you added information in the past day or two, please feel free to re-add your information.

I was offered an amazing 5 year funding package that includes a 3 year fellowship. Now it’s decision time.

I was rejected from Cornell's Comparative Literature program but had my application forwarded to Medieval Studies and ROSE FROM THE ASHES LIKE A MF PHOENIX, LADIES AND GENTS WITH THAT ACCEPTANCE FROM THEM! Super thrilled about this offer even though I made the DGS uncomfy by sobbing on the phone at him when he told me.
