  1. Not holding my breath, because nothing yet. Thank you!
  2. HOLY SHIT THAT'S AWESOME! They are my number one choice, so also hoping for a phonecall!
  3. Looking forward to receiving the official paperwork from U Del, as the acceptance was a phone call!
  4. That's excellent - thank you! Fiance and I love to try new places to eat, as well as go outside, so the State Park sounds amazing! Waffles and ice cream are two of my favorite things, so that's great to hear. Any places that have live music in town, or do you have to go into the city for that? I'm sure there are multiple on campus events as well, which I always love attending. Sounds like a great place to be! There were beautiful Greens on both my BA and MA campuses, so I will check out U Del's green when I'm visiting for sure. Also, how is biking on campus? And are there bike trails around?
  5. I second the importance of faculty/student engagement- as someone who thrives with one to several close mentors, I know the program I accept an offer from will need a good track record of faculty/student relations.
  6. Thanks for this thread! Only acceptance so far this round is U Del, but hopefully I will get one or two more acceptances. Regardless, this thread is good food for thought.
  7. Haven't seen any activity for this application season yet, but I am ready to assume Brown is a rejection. However, I did have a short email exchange late summer 2017 with the current Chair of American Studies there, and he did give me some advice (general, but still appreciated) in terms of how to tailor my application to Brown. I also had a brief email exchange with Robert G. Lee, one of my original POIs until he told me that 2017-2018 was his last year teaching full time at Brown. He did suggest some other POIs to look into, as well as to make sure my SOP and Writing Sample are strong. It's my second time applying to Brown's American Studies, so we will see!
  8. I also applied to USC ASE. Not holding my breath despite one of my POIs in the program wrote me a letter of rec.
  9. U Del is my only acceptance so far (still waiting on 8 other programs) and am looking forward to checking it out when I visit in March. Anything to check out in particular on campus or off of campus? From the pictures I have seen, it looks like a beautiful campus!
  10. Thank you! Hmmmm I think it depends on the program in terms of the Masters. I know for some programs they are picky about having an MA in Lit before the PhD. Fingers hugely crossed for you!
  11. AHHH! UC Irvine just emailed me saying they processed my financial information and will be in contact about my application soon. Fingers crossed for good news, as I would LOVE an acceptance from there!
  12. The geographical diversity is due to having a very supportive fiance who is willing to move anywhere with me - he does web design and development, so he isn't tied down to a specific location, which is nice. I was rejected from UMASS the past two years I applied there (didn't bother applying there this round) - this is my third round of apps! Good luck to you as well! I am VERY happy with Delaware - they have a Race and Ethnicity research track, which I would be pursuing if I attend. They also do a pretty even emphasis on both research and teaching, which I love.
  13. Thank you so much! Fingers super crossed for everyone waiting!
  14. I have one acceptance so far, and still waiting to hear back from 8 schools (applied to 9 total). Also, I don't know if it is the same process this year, but for Fall 2017 applications, Stonybrook did Skype interviews (I only know this because a friend had one, but ended up declining acceptance in favor of Tufts - he was also an English Lit applicant).
  15. Congrats to you and thank you so much! So happy and thrilled to see all of these acceptances come through.
  16. I am really excited about their Race and Ethnicity track
  17. I agree! The funding package is nothing to sneeze at! I still have 8 to hear back from, but so happy to finally have an acceptance. And CONGRATS to your husband!
  18. GOT THE UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE CALL AS WELL! (at 2:15 this afternoon). Super nice phone call, great funding package, said they were very impressed with my application and writing sample. Research Track I am pursuing if attending: Race and Ethnicity. So thrilled! One of my top 5 choices! This was my third round of apps - DO NOT GIVE UP if it is what you really want!
  19. UPDATE: Was accepted to University of Delaware! First ever acceptance! Third round of applications - don't give up if you really want it!
  20. I feel like I should have applied to more schools - I applied to nine, and this is my third round. I think I should have applied to 12, but money is a big factor for me.
  21. So incredibly anxious and terrified to hear back. Something is telling me that this, my third round, is going to be another all rejection round - I haven't heard ANYTHING from the 9 programs I applied to this time. I'm plagued by: What am I doing wrong? - Even though a POI at my top choice program wrote me a letter of rec for all programs, let the Ad Comm of the program know that he strongly supports my application, and he helped me with my SOP and Writing Sample for all programs I applied to. All I need is one shot, and if it is my top choice, I will be incredibly thrilled. POI there said he would mentor me if I am accepted. USC English is my top choice. I am sooooo anxious to hear back from them all, but especially that one.
  22. Thanks for this! I know USC English is a long shot, but met one of my POIs this summer, and he helped with my app materials and wrote me a letter of rec for all programs I applied to, plus told the English committee that he strongly recommends my application. Good luck everyone!
  23. Thank you so much! UC Irvine would be such a good program and fit for me.
  24. So happy this thread exists. This is my third round of applications and I am incredibly nervous. Field: 20th century and contemporary American Lit, focus on ethnic American lit (identity, race, ethnicity, history, politics). 3.68 undergrad GPA, 4.04 MA GPA. TA in MA program, now almost two full years of adjunct teaching experience at a local university, teaching both Lit and Composition. GRE 160 Verbal, 5 W, 138 Quant (terrible at math/math anxiety). Terrible on subject test, but only two programs required it. This round I applied to 9 programs, 7 English Lit and 2 American Studies. Also have numerous awards, 2 academic articles forthcoming, 14 or so poetry publications, numerous conference presentations, participated at the 2017 Futures of American Studies Institute at Dartmouth College. Got a letter of rec this round from one of my POIs at USC (met him at Futures); he helped me with app materials and strongly recommended my app to the English Dept. Fingers crossed, as USC has been my top choice for the last two years. My top 3 programs are University of Southern California for English (USC), UC Irvine for English, and SUNY Binghamton for English, tied with USC for American Studies. Being rejected my second round absolutely crushed me; I really hope this is when I get in. I just need a shot!
